Row as Christmas lights renamed

A decision to call Christmas lights "Winter Lights" in south London has been condemned as showing a "total lack of respect" for Christians.
Advertisements for the switch-on of the lights in multi-cultural Lambeth have renamed them, apparently for fear of offending other faiths.

Tory councillor Bernard Gentry told the BBC: "Christmas appears to have been cancelled in our borough".

A spokesman said it was an error by a junior official and not council policy.

In three of Lambeth's main town centres, the lights were referred to as "Winter Lights", while in a fourth they were called "Celebrity Lights".

The idea that, in some way, the religious festival of Christmas is offensive to others is just daft

The council spokeswoman said an official was concerned about people from other religions.

She said: "It was a junior-level decision and it happened to go into print which was an error basically.

"I think it was certainly not a council policy that we should call the lights winter lights."

But it has led to a series of headlines such as "Christmas is banned" and "The PC [politically correct] lights show" and led some members of other faiths to call it "ridiculous".

And Mr Gentry, a conservative member of the joint Lib Dem-Tory controlled borough, told the BBC it went against efforts to promote respect for all faiths.

"It just seems totally against everything that we as members of the council have said, when officers try to airbrush out one of the main festivals of what is still the biggest religion in Lambeth."

"The idea that, in some way, the religious festival of Christmas is offensive to others is just daft - I have never heard a single person who's said that."

The advert appeared in Lambeth Life - a newspaper distributed by the council - and on posters.

Twats. Having said that Christmas is not originally christian either, same goes for most christian celebrations.

most of these "do gooders" who make these rules up are in fact english people, most asian people dont complain about those trivual things and if they dont like it send them back to their own country,we have to respect that countries beliefes so they should here,a lot of things that was english has now gone due to these do gooders who think they know best,in an athiest and proud to be one,in fact they should ban religion as that would stop a lot of conflicts around the world:bandit:

and led some members of other faiths to call it "ridiculous
about sums it up, even other religions know the stupidity of it. It's every day now some prat comes up with another thing not allowed, I am suprised we are allowed to refer to our bikes as "BLACKBIRDS" are we not offending someone?
A funny on the same subject, my wife is of asian decent, and talking about bikes I was overheard to say I love my "blackbird" but the person overhearing had missed the start of the conversation and said didn't my wife mind me saying that? we all looked at her blankly until she explained what she meant, well, when we stopped laughing, we explained what she missed and she went very red:blush:

One of the local schools here celbrated Ramadan whilst restricting any mention of Easter !
Parents went apeshite and told the PC wankers they would pull ALL the kids out of the school if things did not change...

People power came through and the status quo re-established :p

Brilliant common sense prevails for once.

I have my doubts about the chances in Glasgow though, during a recent flirtation with the idea of moving home I had a butchers at the jobs pages, total number of positions for technical professionals advertised 3, number of social wreckers positions about 35.:bang:
