Motorcyclist dies in crash



A MOTORCYCLIST has been killed on the A171 less than a month after another biker died on the road.



The latest crash caused bank holiday traffic chaos on Saturday as the Whitby-to-Scarborough road had to be closed for nearly five hours.
Jonathan Stokes was riding towards Scarborough when his red Honda motorcycle collided with a silver Ford Escort near The Flask Inn at 2.13pm.
The 38-year-old, of Asquith Avenue, Scarborough, was taken to Scarborough Hospital but died five hours later.
The female driver of the Escort, who was staying at the Flask caravan park, had to be cut free from the wreckage of her car and was taken to hospital with chest injuries. Her condition was described yesterday morning as "serious" but not life-threatening.
A passenger in the car received minor cuts and was suffering from shock.
Traffic had to be diverted through Pickering until the A171 was re-opened at 7pm.
TC Mark Gonella, who is investigating the crash, said: "The main coastal road was closed for several hours on a bank holiday weekend which caused chaos but we have to get the road closed so we can look at all the evidence at the scene.
"We know the positions of the vehicles at the time of the accident which would suggest to us the car has pulled out from the junction but at this moment in time we have no indication of the speed."

Martin Pearson (27), of Lealholm, died on Good Friday when his Suzuki motorbike collided head-on with a Peugeot 206 at High Normanby Bends on the A171.
