Interesting Antibiotics

Working from home, I have the radio on almost all day. I listen to Planet Rock even though the adverts get on my tits. One in particular has caught my attention of late, stating that we should not take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Um, I thought antibiotics were provided by doctor type people on prescription, therefore no one should be taking them unnecessarily.

I listen to the same station but confess, I tend to switch my brain off when it comes to the adverts, but have noticed they seem to play a lot of Pink Floyd during the day.

I think they're getting at the fact that some patients are like a dog with a ball when it comes to antibiotics & won't go away until they get some. Some Doctors, I've heard will just prescribe them to get rid of particularly demanding patients (instead of prescribing a placebo which would seem to make more sense) and I know of at least one patient in my local practice that's not above making up symptoms, just so they can get an antibiotic prescribed on the basis that they think they need them.

Oddly, as I type this, I've just heard the ad.

The problem is, the more you use antibiotics the lesser the effect.
It is a major concern in the medical arena that there are no new antibiotics coming on stream and those we have are likely to be useless in the next 15 years or so

If you have access to internet radio, try ace radio.net and then choose your channel. American station that plays three songs, three (annoying) adverts, three songs, three (annoying) adverts, three songs, three (annoying) adverts, etc. I listen to either Hard Rock (similar to Planet Rock but more biased towards American bands, like Aerosmith, GnR, 5FDP, etc) or Hair Metal (a lot of 80s metal from the likes of Bon Jovi, Ratt, Van Halen, etc).

Floyd are ok but I think you need to be stoned off your crust to enjoy them. Personally, I'm not a fan and only really like one song of theirs and that's the live version of Run Like Hell.

Back on track, agree re the placebo. Taking antibiotics for no reason just builds up an immunity against the bloody things, which renders them less effective. And don't get me started in the twats that don't finish the course, thus breeding a more robust bug that has tolerance to the drugs. This then leads to necessity for a stronger antibiotic, which doesn't help the immune system, or a longer course of the original treatment.

The problem is, the more you use antibiotics the lesser the effect.

Yep, heard that, too. Mostly because of fuckwits taking what they don't need and those that don't finish the bloody course.

I read there is an underlying issue that is around animal treatment -

Using antibiotics in animals may raise the risk of transmitting drug-resistant bacteria to humans either by direct infection or by transferring “resistance genes from agriculture into human pathogens,” the researchers caution.

They are almost fed by prescription to ensure good meat and no infection, I am not anti-meat by any means but I am do not use all our antibiotics up for speed and mass production.
