Last weekend freezing me spuds off on a bulk carrier, watching steel coils being discharged.

Now I’m sat in the lounge at Gatwick, on my way to Haldia (close to Calcutta) via Dubai because a bunch of twats on another bulk carrier don’t know how to carry coal. Bastard stuff is self-heating, probably on fire, and Knobhead here has to go and sort it out.

In comparison. I’ve been for a walk with the pooch. A lazy breakfast followed of croissants and coffee. I’m now toying with whether to go to town and get in everyone’s way (the joys of retirement) or settle in, await the rain and watch Black Hawk Down or Fury (again). Enjoy the flight !

That nothing... I had to get on the scoot, ride 400 yds, buy a two litre bottle of milk AND some mushrooms for a curry tonight..
Then I had to walk the dog as well.

On the plus side, I have a flat bed to look forward to on the flight. Problem with Emirates though is that there’s a bar at the back of the business cabin, which tends to get congested with steak and kidney lock openers who both have a few quid and can’t hold their drink.

Coulda walked, lazy twat. :p

Well, I’ll be troughing all the curry I can handle for the next few days. They make ‘em good in the Bengal.

Don't forget the fire extinguisher.
There is a claim that this was part of the problem with the Titanic.

I think he had something to do with that too....

Off downstairs in a moment to watch the rugby. Booze and nibblies in abundance.

No fire extinguisher’s gonna help with this. Close and seal the hatches and starve it of oxygen. Then it’s squeaky bum time and hope the CO and methane levels don’t raise.

Why cargo watch on Steel coils, hardly going to get nicked. Or were you the tallyman?

Neither, just a regular outturn survey. In other words, owners playing CYA. I was there to observe the coils in case of any future claims.

As a sparks, I use to earn beer money doing cargo watch in No.1 hold, all the fine goods. Could knock off once they got down to the steel cargo at the bottom.

It does seem a bit over the top going all the way to India to chuck a bucket of water over a few embers.....

Hope you enjoy the country more than I did - I was offered a six month role in Mumbai, did a two week stint to see if I fancied it.......never went back. Mumbai probably isn't representative of the nation, pretty grim.

For someone who once had the responsibility that you did, you really are intolerably thick sometimes. You can’t extinguish a coal fire in a cargo hold by chucking water on it, dimwit. In any event, I’m here for other stuff, too, but management of the shit show is one of the reasons.

Bombay is as mad as a box of frogs and I love the place. I love the country in general but it’s nice to be back inBengal, not been here for over five years.

Easy money for you in port, especially when you were on (more or less) permanent day work (y)

I’ve never tried one from “the Bengal” but I’ve had plenty from The Darton balti” & they are delicious.
I’m in Haldia, West Bengal now. Food is amazing! Love India, me.
