Not being a Yamaha buff, I wouldn't know the difference between an 01 or an 03 Joe. 1200 miles..that's brand new! Looks nice.DIRTY SANCHEZ said:That's my favorite colour scheme - feking A+++++++++++++++++++ mate.
Curiously, the missus is looking to trade her 2001 model for an 03 model and she likes this one. What d'ya think? Only 1,200 miles
I've not riden the new Blade so can't comment but what is quite noticeable about the 04 R1 is that you do have to rev it more than the earlier models, however when you do, it sure does fly. Glad you like it, 'cos it's by far the most elegant sports bike out there & that swing arm is a work of art. Out of curiousity, (serious question) did Carol get a warm bum from the underseat exhausts or not?roXXo said:Not being a Yamaha buff, I wouldn't know the difference between an 01 or an 03 Joe. 1200 miles..that's brand new! I love the lines of the 04 model though and mistral grey isn't so "in your face".
Strangely, I think that the R1 is a better road bike than the Blade. The R1 is easier to ride slower and doesn't feel so radical. It's feels more stable and a little softer than the Blade. A very comfortable ride. The ergonomics suit me perfectly.
I don't know why some folk don't get on with "clip ons and rearsets", I much prefer sports bikes riding ergonomics than the more sit up/touring style.
The other Saturday, Carol and I did a ride of 240 miles around the North Yorkshire moors. See even R1s are pillion friendly!
I don't know if it's all in the mind but I prefer the mechanical steering damper rather than the leccy gizmo on the blade.
The R1 motor has so much go as well, when you get her wound up. The Blade felt a bit stronger at lower revs and the throttle was a bit of an on off switch. The R1's fuelling and power build up is seemless and faultless. The tyres are Continental sport attacks. I'd seen the adverts in the mags for them but never seen or heard about them "on the street". They are fantastic. I can't fault them. To the edge already, well on the right hand side round my fav. roundabout.
Going to Germany on Wednesday for a few days with Lensman. Rotterdam to the Harz mountains. Off the ferry at breakfast, lunch in Bad Grund 340 miles later. A few days in the mountains/twisties. Bring it on!

You're right about having to rev her. I like that aspect. You can pootle around sensibly or get her wound up. I like the programmable rev limit light and the lap timer. Delusions of being a racer.DIRTY SANCHEZ said:I've not riden the new Blade so can't comment but what is quite noticeable about the 04 R1 is that you do have to rev it more than the earlier models, however when you do, it sure does fly. Your comments about the Conti attacks are interesting. I wonder how they'll cope with track work. Are you proposing to track the R1? We're defo doing Cadwell this year so be could to meet up.
As for clips-ons and rearsets, I couldn't agree more. First mod on my Gixer 750 was rearsets and the next will be clips on so I can spread out a bit more on it.
Enjoy Germany mate. We're riding up to the Le Mans GP from Malaga next week, so sounds we'll both be having fun.

No Carol didn't mention a hot bot but to be honest she did have some aches after a day on the back, and the longest run without a stop was only 70 miles. I think a gelastic insert (in the bikes seat) will make a big difference. I thought that her legs might have been a problem, but she said that the seating postion was fine even though the peg to seat nose is only 13 inches.
15 on the Blade and on my son's 03 R6. She doesn't not like having a grabrail though, so I have a Renntec luggage rack/grabrail for two up work.
OK, she was spoilt on the Bird and she would have another one tomorrow but she would never allow me to get a tourer or a cruiser.
Re taking the R1 on track. I'm not sure. One half of me wants to but it is my only bike now and I am still in the "just going into the garage to look at it mode". It must be love. When I took the SP1 on track, while you don't want to throw it away, in the back of my my I knew that I always had the Bird to ride. I have a mate with a Gixser thou and know 2 guys with 750s and the first question they asked was "when are you taking her to Cadwell" , We'll see. Shall I keep the luggage rack on ?

Just over 5000 miles put on her in 3 months including 2 trips abroad. Fantastic. Perfect bike for solo work.
Alongside the R1, I now have a 2000 YZX1000R Thunderace, blue/black for 2 up work. Carol reckons it's as comfortable as the Bird, it has plenty of grunt and handles better than the Bird.
I'm becoming a bit of a Yam fan
