After 200 years Terry's chocolate factory in york, has finally closed it's doors and moved production abroad because it is cheaper, desperate is not the word, it is cheaper for them to buy a new factory abroad and employ the locals and then export the product back to britain, than it is to maintain a long established production line in this country, not giving a toss for the workers some of whom are carrying on a long standing family tradition of working for Terry's, who now join the ranks of the unemployed.
a very sad day. RIP Terry's of York.

My son in law worked for Chubb maufacturing fire extinguishers for over 17 years, he even moved with the firm from Oldham down to Pontypridd. The sods have now made everyone redundant and set the business up in China.

Dont these firms realise that at this rate they will be unable to sell any of their products in the UK cos we will all be on the dole and unable to afford to buy!!!!!!

It is only a matter of time before we become a third world country, relying on handouts from the country's we have been helping throughout the years.

What really pisses me off about a lot of these "re-locations" is that the companies involved are actually making profits operating in this country, not losing money. But the greedy bastards want it all and fuck the consequences for those who have worked for them. :bang: :bang:

the reason Terry's have gone abroad, is to quote Peter Terry, the current owner "Our factory is 200 years old, we applied for permission to build a new modern factory in York and were rejected so have been left with no alternative but to relocate abroad"

So there is nowhere else in UK where Terry's can make their chocolate?

They probably submitted some ridiculous planning application knowing full well it would not be approved. I find it difficult to believe that the local council would not seek to ensure that a major employer remained in the area.

Well exactly.

and look at the "laws" that say you cant keep flooding the country with imports, so if you build an ASSEMBLY plant here you can then flog what the hell you want without the restrictions we had threatened!! so they are still importing the vast majority of the parts for assembly here, so thats alright then!!

I love the bones of you.....but you are just playing with words here....don't look back....we have to move on....we don't want to be manufacturing sod all....unless it is beyond the capabilities of the third world...much as I detest Tony Blair et al we have to educate and move on..development is an exponential curve and we have to take advantage of our lead. Bill.

I see. They want their cars to leak oil, let the rain in, go rusty around all the suspension mounts, not work in the wet.

Makes loads of sense. They'll sell millions of them!

right then, lets say I work in a steel mill, we are knocking out steel for use in the manufacture of cars, washing machines, rails for the railways etc etc, we are then closed down as it's cheaper to buy the stuff from the other side of the world, I retrain, I'm now putting "foreign" cars together to sell in this country and a few to export "to keep the government happy" then they decide to close the plant down and continue production elsewhere, the government kicks in and gives the company a "hand out" to continue in this country, so they do after reducing the workforce again, I "retrain" this time I'm working in the "banking" game, and lo and behold they put me out of work again by moving all their admin abroad, I retrain again computers this time, only problem is now there are thousands like me, throughly retrained in computers but no jobs to go round, as the only jobs available are now "service" jobs that rely on company's employing people to do the jobs of MANUFACTURING trouble is there are no manufacturing jobs now as they have all been moved abroad!! so the "service" industry "down sizes" and I'm out of work again, so what do I retrain as this time ??? it goes on and on!!
as an example in the Leeds area they have shut literally hundreds of company's down in the last 5 years, and the ONLY things that are being built are warehouses!! fookin undreds of em!! most are now stood empty,!! waiting for company's such as Kimberly Clark, Smith Kline and other big "foreign" company's to keep their imported products in until we buy them, and they are being run in such a way that the staffing levels is tiny in comparison to the workforce that once worked on the same land MAKING things that these same warehouses now use to store stuff made elsewhere!! and the kids of the original workforce are now wandering about looking for non existent jobs and all the time I'm told to retrain!! to what the service industry which has by now been taken over by low paid illegal immigrants that have never contributed to the upkeep of the benefits system they are only too happy to plunder it as they too get older and demand we keep them and their imported family's,
the above may well be a "simplistic" view of things but it is happening to a greater or lesser degree all over, where will it all stop?? :dunno:
