Annoying vibration in a Bbird.

Test done...when the engine is switched off, the vibes go away, coasting with no vibes through the feet or the handle bars. Sooooooo, engine mounts? or a more sinister? OMG, let it be the tightening of engine bolts....Petros.

The cct has just been done. Any thoughts? Centaur.

Have you recently fitted aftermarket exhausts ? - OEM act as a damper due to weight.

When were the balancer shafts last adjusted ? - can give a CCT type vibe.

Have you put light alloy bar ends on ? - The steel / stainless ones are heavy for damping reasons.

Has bike fallen over at all and bashed the bar inner damper ?

How easy is this to do?
I've wanted to have a go at mine but always backed in fear of doing something wrong.

Pretty easy - just a case of undoing the clamp bolt and rotating the shaft.

There are different ways to do it. Both require lower panels off.
There are THREE shafts to adjust.

Book says do it cold and feel for resistance - I couldn't get this to work for me.

Alternative way is hot.
Run bike up to temp - with engine running - undo clamp bolt - turn shaft till you hear gear whine - back off one notch.
Repeat for other two shafts.

I've read this, and that's the bit that worries me.
Is the 'whine' obvious?
Is there a set order to do them?

Unless your engine sounds like a bag of spanners being thrown around - YES - the whine/howl of the gears is very obvious.

There are two adjusters on the RIGHT of the engine and one on the left.

I always do the FRONT RIGHT one first - turn it clockwise to gear whine - then counter clockwise 1 notch.

Then the LEFT side one - counter clockwise to gear whine - then clockwise 1 notch.

Finally the REAR RIGHT one - again counter clockwise to gear whine - then clockwise 1 notch.

No, to the exhausts
Balancer shafts never adjusted...17000 miles
Original bar ends
No falls

Thanks CBRDEANO

@tu* Thanks for the info Deano, I was wondering about this & guessed it was a similar process to Kawasaki balancer shafts, you just confirmed it which helps a lot :-0)

It is worth doing a periodic loosening and re-tightening of the engine mounts.. Found several over the years that were out of wack

Petros and I had a feeling this would come up. He'll need to find the correct torques and any sequence of loosening and tightening, John. He assures me he has an accurate torque wrench. She's called San and keeps him well torqued up! 8rfl@

I have just taken the panels off (yes I have the time to do it now) and I have seen the units that you are talking about on the RH but I cannot see the LH one....Where exactly is it? c7u8

hey CBRDEANO

Just had a look.....right hand side-I can't see any problems in adjusting them.
The left hand side is difficult to even see the adjuster never mind been able to adjust. Any tips as to how? (haha, at least I found it now)
No room for spanners in there what so ever. Do I have to dismantle everything in front of it? :bang:

In your picture, all sorts have been taken apart....

Not my pic - just one I found.

I find access much easier if you lift the rear of the tank and go in from there.

Just a point, Petros.

When Deano says "lift the rear of the tank" he means the petrol tank and not one of the Panzers Germany has parked all over Greece to make you pay your taxes. 8rfl@

Before messing with the balancing shafts..... Is this something that is really likely to be the cause? Not aware of any issues on other Birds via this site? Anyone?

The engine mounts look much easier to do so that might be the best place to start?

:dunno:

Do you or anyone know the torques and order of adjusting if required? :dunno:

I just don't know, I am getting a vibration through the bars and the pegs, noticeable (more) at around 3k to 3.5k rpm.
Going through different things to see what eliminates it. The bike has done 17000 miles and the balancers have never been done. Saying that, the engine mounting bolts have never been done
VERY IMPORTAND, I also did the test where turned engine off at speed and NO VIBES........c7u8

New tyres now, serviced, new brakes....gr0n:
