Chris, I wish you the best of luck and really hope you get a deal, but I think you will struggle mate..
Just ran a quick check for you and the value of yours is equal to the value of a 1996 to 1998.. about the bid 3k mark. ( retail value of both vehicles )

Next question has to be,Is ther anthing wrong with an older Bird? I have been offered a deal on a R plate Black BBird, 26000 miles. Seems alright. Would this be a decent bike?

Early bird

Nothing wrong with the early carb Bird, mine has now done 40,000 miles, and still looks like new.
Have you had a chance to ride one yet ?

Yup, high mileage on the bird is considered to be more than 500,000 miles ( this is not a joke.. A bird is not considered run in until it has 8 to 10,000 miles on it, and at that point it just starts loosening up nicely ! )

At 26,000 miles it is just in its prime..

There are a few things to check at that mileage though:

Please note, none of the following are overly expensive and all are easily fixed.. they are more bargaining chips for you !

1) make a fist and slide it between the nose cone and front mudguard. The average fist should just fit nicely in the gap. If its more than a touch top and bottom the fork springs are shagged.
About 40 minutes to fix and def. not a million quid !

2) Rev the bike to about 3.5k. Listen for a rattle.. If you hear one the CCT is past it.. ?43.00 and 20 minutes to fix !

3) Turn the headlight on.. Make sure it gets a little brighter when you rec above tick over.. If not maybe the reg rec is dead.. Replacement ?53 and another 20 minute or so job.

4) Tyres.. make sure they are not worn out and if they are Bridgestone 020 or Avons make sure they are the corrent tyres for the bike.

5) Well there aint really a solid number 5.. Its just a general feel of things.. Are the footpeg rubbers worn more than you would expect, are the old MOT's there and do the mileages cross check.. all that malarky

As some of you know we had an Africa Twin - purchased brand spankin new on a 51 plate, think it was ?5,665 or something like that, no p/ex, grey import from DK at Stoke.

9 months later we p/ex'd it for a brand spankin new 02 Trophy, think we got ?3,500 for it.

So are Africa's holding their price better these days????

Have to say that the jump up from a ? is it a 750 engine in the Africa? to the 1200 of the Bird, the comfort, the fairings the sheer style of the thing - is a bit of a quantum leap!!!

And of course, as we can defo state categorically! - it's just ever so slightly more expensive when you drop the Bird than when you drop the Africa - no sump guard to save yer bacon - a bit of wet'n'dry an' some elbow-grease and no-one was any the wiser with the Africa! LOL Much better All Terrain bike than the Birdie, though!!!

Pete bought it so he could have a bit of fun on his own, if I didn't find I liked bikes. We loved that bike - but my arse didn't LOL
