Taking the mrs to france for her birthday on the bike (how very nice of me, i'm all heart) Although she goes on the back of the bike, she is not into long journeys. Now the plan is, Melton Mowbray to Dover to Boulogne, when we get of the ferry i have a max of two hours (been told) so can any one recomend any place with in two hours??
Her idea, is some where near a beach, with places to WALK!!!! round (i dont understand that bit:dunno:)
Any laws in france on bikes that i should be aware of??

Le Touquet

Hi Brian,

If you are still planning the trip I'd recommend Le Touquet Paris Plage, it's 23 miles from Boulogne and a nice seaside town. Good expanse of sandy beach with dunes and lots of shops and restaurants for such a small town. Stayed there overnight last year before catching the ferry back and it's a nice place to spend a few hours.

The speed cameras are dark blue and near immpossible to see! If you are caught going too much over the limit you loose your licence on the spot! You will then have to arrange recovery unless you can get the wifey to ride it back!:bang:.....Oh yes radar detectors like my BEL 966 are illegal to use in France (& Scotland).

Hope you are still taking her indoors over to france. I can recommend Portsmouth to Cherbourg, then onto Ste-Mere-Eglise, ( small village. )1 hour off ferry, easy to find, loads of places of interest. Iv got a couple of hotels I could recommend.

PS, it ia a traffic offence in france to cross a solid white line. If you have to stop at a road junction to join a main road and it has a solid white line ,stop put your tootsies down, even if the road is clear, plod has been known to hide, waiting for someone to cross the white line.

Just make sure you have your docs with you ( insurance etc) and a Hi Viz yellow vest in ya baggage, chances are you won't see a policeman all day but if ya get stopped without any of above it's a march down to the nearest cash point where they will relieve you of lots of cash.

If you ever ride the autoroutes NEVER use the auto tolls that take cards, as they charge you for a car, not a bike. Use the manned ones all the time, sometimes you even get waved through for no fee (sometimes)

I thought Hi-vis was for cars and did'nt apply to bikes.. or bikes are exempt from this ruling? read it on here somewhere.

hi viz for bikes as well and bulbs, the only thing different from the stuff you need for a car is you dont need a warning triangle , V5 log book, insurance cert and passport to be carried at all times

Hi Viz x2 if you have a pillion. And both have to put them on if you break down. Must be easily accesable.

You also have to help or offer assistance at the scene of an accident, good citizen law or something.

is the hi-viz a new thing??

it has been a few years since we were in France but we never carried hi viz. We did always carry the docs and spare bulbs and a first aid kit but never had hi-viz

I just checked out all the euorpean countries.

You don't need bulbs or hi viz. You do need a warning triangle in some countries. Austria is one, I think.

I'm taking bulbs anyway, and may take a hi viz if I have enough room.

I'm going to make triangle on the bottom of my top box with red insulation tape.
