He has no formal education, no qualifications and his reading is only just started to improve through using a mobile, texts from him would make no sense to 90% of people but those who know get it straight away (and its bloody funny sometimes) the best way to put it is simply a clever bloke who just cant read spell or write worth a damn

But he is very switched on, throw numbers at him and he gives you the answer almost before you can finish the question, he also has the ability to see a problem and a simple solution to most things mechanical even though he cant read a manual, stick him in front of a lathe or miller etc and he will work it to perfection and produce whatever you need.

He's been my mate for 40 odd years and the thing that gets me is if we are pissing about with a bike, I will read out carb settings (for example) and he will remember them years later with no prompting, even better if I ask what these jets came out of he will squint at the size and say "oh that was a gsxr1100k" it could have been 20 years since we did that bike and he will still know so its bloody useful
Doesn't surprise me in the least. Makes you wonder what could have been achieved if he was fortunate enough to have been shipped off to a private school where his talents could've been harnessed and directed.

Did you know most dyslexics are left handed?
I have a mate who is dyslexic, brilliant mechanic but thick as a packet of bisto
Did you know that the average left hander lives seven years less than a righty.

Lefties are generally more intelligent.

Most polar bears are left handed.

Even a proper education from a young age would have worked wonders, all it would have taken is for one teacher to spend some time with him, he has the ability to read all be it not very well, if someone had spent the time he could have been much better, but instead the wrote him off as thick, to be honest it still makes me angry now

Not quite but he does have a capacity for remembering random stuff and can learn quickly by watching someone do a job, all he really struggles with is reading and writing, its all just a jumble of shapes to him although he has learnt some common words and can now get his meaning across in a text (written like it sounds makes sense when you know him)

There was a tendency to fob people off, especially kids, in the 70s and 80s. This is why I don't fall to my knees and worship at the mere mention of the NHS because they seriously failed me as a little boy. Wankers.
