A Follow-Up to the Better Riding Course

Back in March I went on a BRC thanks to bmwdumptruck flagging it on this forum. As a follow-up the local IAM branch invited those on the course to join in on one of their monthly Sunday morning observed runs. Today I finally managed to get myself along to see what it was all about.

About 40 riders had turned up - there were 3 or 4 other first timers as well. After a welcome and some introductions I was assigned an observer and we were also joined by another rider who was training to be an observer.

The three of us set off on a 60 mile ride towards Cambridge over a wide variety of roads and riding conditions. We stopped half-way for a review, had a bit of lunch at the stopover and then a different route back with a half-way stop again.

Feedback from the observers was accurate and delivered with good humour by riders who were genuinely interested in making you a better, safer rider. There was recognition and understanding of the performance potential of motorbikes and a realistic approach to riding on lightly trafficked roads.

I had a really good time today, was given good advice and had the opportunity to put it into practice. Any training is good - when it is delivered by riders who care it becomes priceless. This has made me a better, safer rider and one day it may save my life. Next step is to sign up for more observed runs, leading to the test.

As luck would have it bmwdumptruck was my observer. Top bloke. Top rider. I salute you. Thanks.

Good for you!@tu*

A lot of riders whinge about the antics of cage drivers whilst conveniently avoiding any form of upskilling themselves.

At 63, I joined the NZ branch of IAM last year and it's completely rejuvenated my riding as well as undoubtedly prolonging it. The lads over here certainly don't fit the "pipe and slippers" stereotype. Now doing my Observer training to put something back into it.

Currently doing the whole better riding thing via the PECAM group in Peterborough. They don't seem to fit the "pipe and slippers" thing either, the pipe's would never stay alight and the slippers would blow off if they were worn on the couple of social rides I've been on8rfl@.

It does do wonders for your riding though! and has brought a whole new sense of enjoyment in riding along with an improved sixth sense for predicting the antics of others!
