'98 Bird missfire

Well,I went out for a blat today on my '98 carbed bird.Weather was sunny, dry and cold(about 2c).About 20 miles in,I noticed a slight missfire. It got worse, but every now and then it seemed to clear for a few seconds. My first thought was carb icing.Exactly the same used to happen on my ZZR1100's.

I stopped, left it for 10 mins, started up again fine and all was well for a mile or so,before the missfire returned.I stopped and left it another couple of times, each time it restarted fine and was running sweet....for about a mile and the missfire was back.By now it seemed like it was running on 3 cylinders all the time.

I've been back an hour or so,and just been out to start her up again.Still running on 3.:xm

The bike's a standard 40000 miler, and since getting her,I've done about 4000 trouble free miles.Oil and filter was replaced about 1500 miles ago along with a new Honda air filter, and other than fitting heated grips about a month ago,I've not messed with anything at all, just ridden her!The bike does live outside under a cover, but get's used pretty much every day.

Anyone any ideas what could be wrong? The only thing I'm not sure about is when the plugs were last replaced.Could this have such a drastic effect?I've not looked at anything on her yet as it's dark out there now.

Cheers.

Mike.

has it been laid up for a while?

mine had a habit of running on 3 if it had been standing for any length of time; it still happens occasionally : it clears after a few good runs, could be just shit in a carb jet

Cheers for the advice guys.

I did think of fuel at first, but the bike's used every day.I've done about 4000 miles on it since Sept.I think it had been stood a while before that, but I'd have thought fuel problems would have shown up before now.

I think Lumpy's got it with the ignition side of things.I've just been out and fired it up again, and it sounds bad, worse than before,a bit like an old Superdream.I felt the downpipes.1 and 4 were cold while 2 and 3 got hot,so methinks a coil's probably gone down.I'll have to pull it apart tomorrow and have a good look.

Sorted!

I took the tank and airbox off, swapped the coils over and it was still cylinders 1&4 not firing, which meant it must be in the loom,so I started at the igniter, and immediately saw the problem.A wire had chafed right through.Soldered it back together and, bingo,a lovely smooth Blackbird again.

Glad it was easy and cheap.

Now to find a r/h mirror glass which kind of became...er...damaged yesterday when I was a tad perplexed at my sick Bird.

Oh yes it felt good, but the second I'd done it,I thought..COCK!!

Anyway called mr Honda and he wanted ?60 for a new glass.

So,took a trip to the local motor factors, and ?7 got me some of that shiny plastic mirror glass stuff that you cut out yourself. It'll have to do till something pops up on the Bay.

On the plus side, just got back from a 50 mile blast, and the Bird's running sweet as ever.:-0)

Wonder how long that wire had been shorting?

anger management

my mate Tim threw a spanner at the tank of his KH250, this back in 1982, it dented the tank quite badly and nearly took his ear off as it rebounded .....
Lesson 1. When pissed off; don't be ....... it's ultimately expensive and quite silly :-0)

glad your bike is sorted ......

Come on you Hatters
Try having a flat one cut, I made a template, popped off thelugs that hold the Honda one convex.. Cost me a fiver.

From experience with a van mirror a few years back flat mirrors don't work, they're convex for a reason. You get naff all image in a flat one.

Mike, best to do as you are and keep an eye on ebay, although you could try John(jaws), he might have something.

Cheers for the advice on the mirror folks.I'm wathing one on the bay at the moment. There's only a couple of hours to go and it's at ?7.99,so we'll see.

As for losing my temper,I'm terrible for doing it at inanimate objects...It teaches them a lesson,so they won't do it again.
Working on my Celica a couple of years ago,I could't separate the lower balljoint from the wishbone.I had my screwdriver wedged in there and in a rage I twatted the screwdriver with my lump hammer.Result..Screwdriver fired out..Straight into my eye, with such force it knocked me on my arse.Luckily, the handle end hit me and resulted in blurred vision for a few days and a split eyelid which needed stitched up at hospital.
