97 Blackbird - Change to MOSFET regulator

I was looking at the Kawasaki ones but I don't think they are the same although they look the same.

They are on the later ZX10 and ZX14 bikes

Also fitted to some of the later Yamaha FZ1 and FJR1300

Best bet is to e-mail the seller.

The one that looks the same is the FH010AB and it rated for 35 amp charging.

You need to confirm that the one you will get has FH012AA written on it.

looks good

wonder if this would work for the Efi as well, the reg/rec on mine is mounted on other side of frame and slightly further back so prob need different cables as well :bang:

Some of the guys in the US have done the conversion - the company who makes the leads will do any length you want for about the same price.

There is an extra wire in the FI loom that I belive is something to do with the lights relay.

Sorry to resurrect, but did anyone get to the bottom of if this will work on the EFi? I have a FH020AA Reg and the required wiring kit en route from Japan. However mine is a 99 EFi model and am a bit concerned about this wee black and white wire that appears to feed the lighting circuit.

Can it draw power from elsewhere in the loom or will this need spliced in to the positive feed from the regulator?

Gary, it is such an old thread all the info is way out of date ( useful but out of date )

The reg recs Jaws sells are now all MosFet

However, while the EFI models do suffer reg rec failures it is FAR more common for the generator to fail..

Not sure if you have a problem at the moment but if you do it is worth checking the full FAQ on how to determine what has failed that you can find on the BIRD club site ( Click on the flashing BIRD XX gif at the top left hand side of the forum )

Aye it may well be that, however the reg heats up to 'hot to the touch' after running for around a minute. In the interests of saving any further issues its an upgrade Id be doing regardless.

Ill check the link, however it may well be as you say, as I was monitoring the voltage across the battery at idle, and it was fluctuating all over the shop, from 12 down to 5 volts with no change in load.

Not a great start to my blackbird owners career! ha.

The joys ;)

Oh, and as Birds do not charge AT ALL at idle I am frankly amazed at your results !
Nowt happens below about 1500 revs.
Frankly I would buy a new meter .. if the battery voltage WAS dropping to five volts the bike would not run at all
