97 Blackbird - Change to MOSFET regulator

As per title - I have finally installed the MOSFET regulator/rectifier on my 97 Blackbird along with a YTX14-BS battery.

New voltages are :

Battery only voltage - 12.81v
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.41v @ 1000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.45v @ 2000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.46v @ 3000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.48v @ 4000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.49v @ 5000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.50v @ 6000rpm
Bike running - Main and Dip Lights on, rad fan running - 14.50v @ 7000rpm

I am much happier that the bike now charges at tickover ( 1100rpm ) and that the voltage at charge is very stable over a wide rpm range.

The new regulator/rectifier is an FH012AA and can be found on the Yamaha R1 as well as other bikes.

It barely gets warm when working ( checked over a 1 hour ride ) and it bolts in to the same mounting holes as the OEM R/R.

All in all I think its a great upgrade to the Blackbird electrical system.

Did that plug straight into the loom?

No - there is a pair of pre-made cables available at around ?24.

One goes from the R/R to the OEM generator plug.
One goes from the R/R directly to the battery.

These are nice heavy duty cables with waterproof plugs on the ends.

The standard plug and wiring for the OEM R/R stays in the loom so you can swap back if you ever need to.

Is this how you sourced it or did you get it as a kit from somewhere?

I looked on ebay and bought the R/R off a 2007 R1 in a breakers for ?40.

All I used the FH012AA number for was to ask the seller to confirm the part number cos Yamaha leave it on the unit.

The cables came from a company in Japan and arrived in 4 days.

Now that I know I have the problem I may look at this mod. From what I've just read on the yank ebay it seems to be more than capable for the job.

Yep - if you look on the manufacturers web site (SHINDENGEN) you will see its built for 50amp charging capability.

I have a 30 amp fuse in line to the battery on mine so our charging system has this thing on about 50% capacity.

If you find an R/R you also want to look here - http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Connectors/R_R_Connectors/r_r_connectors.html

You need a part A battery loom and a Part B generator loom at 20" long for the blackbird.

With these two cables it is plug and play.

Nice work Deano @tu*

will be interesting to see how it pans out .. mite be worth John selling the R1 recs and looms instead of the bird specific stuff ... :dunno:

got to be a step in the right direction if its only running at half load..
keep us posted mate

Good thread, its here;

Shindengen MOSFET FH012AA

http://roadstercycle.com/Universal Mosfet FH012AA charging system upgrade.htm

From the search I did several bikers are using them, over a wide range of bikes.

But like DEANO says here;

you can actually get short looms that makes it 'plug&play' which would make it neater and easier for people with no electrical ability and for those that have but can't be arsed!

Very interesting

I would like a little more information on this ....It sounds tempting, especially if its able to be plug and play.....

What bits are needed ...?
What do we have to do... ?
What does all the electrical geniuses (geniui ?) think... is it a good modification ???

Mmmmm tempted !

Looks like a worthwhile mod, If mine ever goes again i'll be looking at this. I agree it might be something John could stock, especially if they were done as P&P. For the bit extra cash it would be worth it i'm sure.

What is needed - 1 x FH012AA r/r, 1 x generator to r/r cable, 1 x battery to r/r cable

What do we have to do - Cut some of the top fin from the new r/r to clear the blackbird bodywork. Mount the new r/r in place of the old one with the same bolts. Run generator cable from r/r to generator plug, run battery cable from r/r to battery, mount the fuse holder under the seat.

I will leave the last part to any electrical geniuses - haha

John already knows about it.. The problem is, it's becoming a popular mod across many different Motorcycles, you did well to find one at that price. Generally second hand post 2007 R1 reg/recs are like rocking horse poo now.

I was looking at the Kawasaki ones but I don't think they are the same although they look the same. I was looking at one off an 09 ZX6R but after I managed to find a manual online in which the wiring diagram shows an extra terminal in the output socket, I've held off

In that case it would be interesting to see how much he could sell them for as we could do with a UK supplier for both the R/R and the P&P wiring.
