4WD

Doesn't matter what 4x4 you get if you have the wrong tyres on, when I got the L200 it had ordinary road tyres on it & I got bogged down in about 6" of mud, I bought a set of General Grabber ATS & what a difference, ploughed through 14" of mud and snow, also pretty good grip on the ice.

I totally agree - my S80 came with a spare set of brand new alloys and winter tyres - must have been ?2k worth - for winter use (car was used by the MD of Volvo UK and has every bit of kit imaginable:-0)) and I haven''t fitted them in 6 years of ownership. simply can't be arsed, particularly as the time you want the winter tyres on is exactly when you don't want to be arsing about. Hence the desire for a cheap 4WD.

All being well I am going to view a Rav 4 on Sunday - 96k miles, 16 years old, new MOT, looks nice in photos and owner says 'no faults, just a few minor marks on the bodywork'.

?795:eek: Seems a tad on the 'too good to be true' side, but he is way out in the sticks so maybe ... you never know.

Funny thing at this end of the market - I am almost tempted to buy one of the many terrible colours these things come in:-0). If I were tempted by an L200, there is an awesome one on EBaY that has been painted in red primer - looks the absolute swingers@tu*

L200 - Wouldnt pull mi granny out of bed, well maybe once but would need a new clutch after, just sent 6 to auction from work all 06 plates, we are glad to see the back of em. Toyota hi lux, now theirs a proper motor no matter how old. I own a RAV 4 they are sound,;-0))

I have had mine for three years now & towed a horse trailer with two 17.2 horses in it a few times, regularly tow the trailer with two Highland ponies in (largest native breed ponies) I have towed a 12 foot ifor tipping trailer with two ton of rubble in it & at least once a week tow large bales of haylage.

This is a vehicle with 124,000 on the clock of which I have contributed 52,000, I am still getting 27mpg.
A colleague has a Landcruiser which he gets between 22mpg - 25mpg & it is permanent 4wd

6 x L200s bought in 06, 5 had 2 clutches, 1 had 1 clutch, none covered over 75k. must admit they are used for towing and off road use every day but everyone at work agrees the hi lux predecessors were better at everything only fuel consumption.
The off road instructors we use for training are bidding for the l200s at auction as they are swapping their land rovers after seeing and admitting the l200 is far more capable, these guys were l/rover diehards but are now converts, their view of the hi lux is, to heavy on fuel.

Coincidentally a guy at work bought one identical to my 05 Animal on the same day I got mine, he paid ?9.500 whereas I paid ?7,400, he swears he will never buy another saloon or hatchback as he absolutely loves his L200.I bought mine as a workhorse but I also use it for my daily commute to work I plan to keep it about another year & then part ex for a Barbarian, better fuel economy, better turning circle & many more gadgets to play with.

Two reasons I wouldn't buy an L200

  1. not apprpriate for what I have in mind - read the first post
  2. I've been in one
  3. and, thirdly (??) people might think I am Derek Kelly
Looks like it's going to be a Rav 4,Vitara or Pinin

Mate of mine has an L200, the slowest sluggish under powered piece of shit I've ever had the mis-fortune to be in.

Mine came with a power upgrade & it keeps up with most of the traffic on the motorway, the Barbarian is supposed to be like shit off a stick

  1. You have a mind?

    [*]I've been in one
    Lucky you

Do you really think many people in Kent will know who I am?
Looks like it's going to be a Rav 4,Vitara or Pinin

As with any vehicle have a good test drive in each, horses for courses etc, personally I would steer clear of the Vitara, a few years back a neighbour & his girlfriend used to tow a double bike trailer with a Ford Escort, they used to go off every weekend, he swapped the Escort for a vitara & was so disappointed he swapped back again, he claimed that the Escort was better at towing than the Vitara

Over the past two days I have moved 13 ponies covering 267 miles, many of these miles were up quite steep winding roads & the l200 coped superbly, so if anyone wants their granny pulling out of bed give me a shout.

someone from Sheffied who I had the misfortune to know had a Vitara, in awful tart green with chrome running boards (so council). It was a joke. The new ones ('09 onward) are very capable, anything over 10 yaesr old has the capability & kudos of a dog turd. Nearly as bad as the 1.8 petrol Freelander.

Narrowed it down to an ancient Rav4. Tough as old boots, seem to go on forever, just need to be wary of clutch and jumping out of gear. Which seems to make an auto the one to go for, although at this end of the market beggars can't be choosers. Black one for sale just up the road from me for ?900, Looks OK, P reg new MOT 133k miles, and only only two dents. If it's still for sale when I get back from Paris I'll see if I can blag it for 5 or 6 hundred.

So what does a difff lock do and is it worth having??

Does just what it says on the tin - locks the diff.

Prevents one wheel spinning when it loses traction.

Not to be used on grippy surfaces or you will kill the drivetrain.

Worth having if you get really stuck - just apply the difflock and drive.

the auto box has an electronic diff lock, on the dash. Not quite the same as the manual. It's perm 4WD, you'll not need it. Just get some decent tyres (not road tyres), makes a world of difference. New oil & filter when you buy it, job done. Jumping out of 2nd gear at 150k miles is something I see mentioned a lot on the manual version.
