More waste of tax payers money. I suppose the Dome has been forgotten.

Don't start me off on that fookin disgrace of an excuse for spending our hard-earned!!

Wembley's no bloody better!

Seems that if London wants, london fookin gets, despite the fact that Birmingham had/has better facilities, road/rail/air access and was way ahead of the game in planning.....

Can't beleive Birmingham wasted local money campaigning, chasing something that would have been of worth for the local, neighbouring and National good!

I am not a sportsman in any way shape or form. Fercking hate athletics but this is FANTASTIC NEWS.

Some folks always have to put a dampner on things by wittering on about money and what we should be spending it on.

This will be a fantastic event and everybody will have a whale of a time. In the coming years all the kiddies who are budding sports stars will be working toward a fantastic goal.

It will bring motivation, interst and investment to a massive section of this country and we should be proud and pleased to host the 2012 Olympics.

Whatever you do in life to enjoy yourself, it costs. So bollocks to any expense and enjoy it.

We can't afford it??????????

We? You mean the UK ? ; the country with the strongest economy in Europe and amongst the strongest in the world? :dunno:
So I suppose Barcelona, Sydney and Athens all could  'cos their economies are/were so strong

On the other hand, we are notoriously poor at coming in on budget/time for any of our large building projects, the weather's shite which will affect visitor numbers & those of us living darn here know how difficult coping with the existing everyday population is, let alone thousands of visitors.

Not that I give a stuff 'cos I won't be here 2012, but my biggest concern is about this "low-cost housing" that'll apparently be available in the East End after its use as an Olympic village. Call me a cynic, but I reckon the only way Tony and his mates will succeed in recovering the money spent developing the area, is to get a PFI going, use a private property developer to do the work (probably at a low cost, to keep the National Audit happy), but grant them ownership of some or all of the properties built and guess what they'll do.................sell 'em at a premium to the folk who'll be the only ones who will be able to afford to use the nearby sports facilities (that will also be sold off to David Lloyd :} ).

There are numerous other places in the UK that could have been put forward that would not have required as much work or as much money to be spent on infrastructure, preparing the site & facilities. And they would have been much more central and available to everyone, without putting such a strain on the already strained infrastructure of London. The cost of compulsorily purchasing the land in East London alone will be extortionate (how I wish I'd of bought a terrace house in Startford now  )

Above all else, I find this Government's attempts to portray itself to the world as "dedicated to sport" comical, especially when we know that most sport in the UK is practiced on a PS2 :p . As Watchman said, to continue to close existing and necessary sporting facilities, to cancel school swimming lessons, to allow councils to charge extortionate prices for the use of council sporting facilities, to sell-off school land that was previously being used for sports, with the fastest growing population of obese children in Europe), whilst spending millions on convincing the IOC that the Olympics should be given to London, is despicable.

Steps of soapbox and hands it to the next twat.

How can you tell when a brit plane lands.. the engines are switched off but the whinning noise keeps on....
That's spooky Jaws, my OZ g/f told me that joke last night :}

Come on guys and gals.... be happy for the olympics.

No great undertaking gets started if all peeps do is think about the problems and downfalls.

I can just see the ancient egyptians now pondering a PFI for the pyramids........ ahhh that's maybe why we don't have any pyramids in the good ole UK.

We had a go and got a project started but it fell foul of planning consents, budget overuns and govt. spending limits/PFI's so was stopeed soon after starting ......... we now call it Stonehenge......

It's a great undertaking....sod the problem enjoy the challenge and make it work.

Oh and traffic won't be a problem....... while everyone's been busy with Live8, G8, Olympic selection etc (Gordon & Tony away busy) John Prescott quietly slipped through a new law banning all travel not directly connected with the running of the olympics during the events....there problem solved.

my mummy is a bit irritated at the thought of paying even more council tax for something she will never use, has absolutely no interest in, and in no way will profit/gain by it, her family will have exactly the same amount of use of these "facility's" as she will have, firkin NONE,
exactly HOW are the "local yokels" going to gain from all this then?? as the first thing thats going to happen is they are all going to be moved away from the area so the place can be built!! :dunno: and as has already been pointed out who will be able to afford to buy these "new" houses after the big "do" certainly not the locals, "that will have by then established new roots" where they've been moved to,:dunno:
I've read the bullshit on their site and don't believe a single word of it, just look at ANY major work along these lines, the price jumps by a minimum of 1+1/2 times the "projected" costs,
don't get me wrong I applaud Seb Coe and his cronies for doing a "wonderful" job, now perhaps they can get on with financing/supporting some "other" good causes like our failing health system or the pension schemes or education and road/railway systems to name but a few, imho more important causes, :dunno:
chew on that one Jaws,!! :p

Chew chew... munch munch...

Ok.. duly chewed and I reply....

Robbo, bad news mate.. just cos you don't believe a word of it, that does not mean it is not actually true !

My thoughts on the govt and the way the UK is run are well known so I cannot be accused of supporting the arseholes for the sake of it..

No mate.. for the time being I will wave the flag and be very very happy for all involved.

If it all goes belly up and I am proved wrong then so be it.. I will be as vociferous and anti as the next man.. But until then..

Please folks, join me in looking on the plus side of it all !

Tell mummy not to be so selfish and blinkered. Untold numbers of people will benefit through the interest, motivation, and impetus that the Olypics will generate.
Regeneration and lots of work for lots of people.

Don't talk down health and education. There have been and continue to be massive improvements in all areas.

Think nice thoughts. Life is wonderful.

If it's less wonderful for some than others it doesn't mean we have to be miserable and whinge about it.

Look for the bad and you will find it. Look for the good and you will find al lot more.
This isn't meant to be heavy Ian.
Embrace life and enjoy.

I'd love a bash at the drugs your on Paul!!! must be great drinking from that forever half FULL cup,
unfortunatly for some, they live in the real world, my Mummy and her neighbours are on fixed incomes, and something that drains even more from their already streached incomes hits hard,!! so it's NOT a case of her being "selfish" it's more a case of the poor being stuffed AGAIN for the sake of a few "well to do" types saiting their desires,
as has been stated above there are better placed citys that could/should have been put forward a lot harder, but the "big boys" decided once again London gets it!!
call me "Mr Cynical" but I think that within 2 years the "estimated" price will at least tripple, and guess who will be asked to pay the difference??

my Mummy!! :B

My widowed mother is on a fixed income along with others in our family. Yes it may be hard for some. Because my mother lives in her own house she cannot claim from the state for a lot of things but she cannot believe how well off she is and how well she is treated by all of the health and social security departments.
She is relatively poor but doesn't see it herself. She is a soft touch for any charity knocking on her door because she sees herself as wealthy. She doesn't understand why some pensioners whinge all the time that they are not getting enough.
Some people are just plain greedy and cannot bear to see anyone else getting something.
I am sure this doesn't apply to your mam Ian but there are alot of moaning minnies out there.

More Waste

I forgot the waste of money this G8 thing will cost, as most of the money will buy guns and stuff.....the cost of fighting Saddam....... I forgot Wembley Stadium that some one just mentioned is going to cost every man woman & child 38p a week for 10 years (and that'll go up)...... Immigration thats another one.
Well I think its bloody frightening if you add it all up.
