Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner,
That I love London so.
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner
That I think of her wherever I go.

I get a funny feeling inside of me
Just walking up and down.
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner
That I love London Town.

Proud as punch I am.

Tis time for a londoner joke then.. ( being born and breed east Londoner myself I can do it LOL )

Blind rabbit .. hopping thru the woods..

Bumps into something... a snake...

Ohhh, sorry.. I am blind and did not see you..

As it happens I am blind too..

Rabbit says well what sort of animal are you ?

Dunno says snake.. Tell you waht, I will feel you all over and take a guess, and you do the same for me..

So snake puts out his tongue and feels the fur, the nose twitching the feet..

Ahh, I aint 100% but THINK you are a rabbit..

Oh thats not so bad then..

Rabbit starts feeling the snake, which unfortunately has just slithered through a bog..

Oh, errrr..... Well your scaly, bald, a bit slimey, and smell funny..

Hate to say it, but I think you are

A londoner !

Yes, it is well done to the team and all that, amd I'm pleased in one way, but there is another side to it which bothers me and puts a downer on it all, and that is:

Can we really afford it?

It's gonna cost billions and where is the money coming from? Some of it private of course, but how much will come from the taxpayer? How much will local Council taxes go up to provide all this?? ?600m+ of the money for the Wembly Stadium project was loaded onto the local Council tax payers!. And don't forget the Millennium Dome fisaco either!

At a time when NHS waiting lists are unacceptably high, when pensioners still have difficulties, when millions still can't get an NHS dentist, when children with a learning disability still can't get the necessary educational needs because the money is not available, when there is still a shortage of Nurses, Doctors, Police etc because the money is not available......... and it goes on an on.

How can the money be availble for the olympic games when all these things are subject to an ongoing shortage of money?? How can the Olympics possibly take priority??

I know there are those that will say the Olympics make a profit...... but a profit for whom?? Who will be the selective profiteers?? Will the local Council tax go down afterwards because a large cash injection from the Olympic profits will be put into the pot?? Will a large donation be made to a hospital to help with it's waiting lists?? Will the mentally ill caught up in the disgraceful care in the community scandal get any Olympic profit relief??

NO!!!

Can we afford it - NO, of course we can't. Is it right that this goes ahead in the greater scheme of things - NO!!

But in the short term the media, government spin, and the general euphoria generated will make it seem right.

Rob, I echo your sentiments entirely.......

Whilst we should applaud the team for all the hard work in winning the bid ( and getting one over on the frogs! ) there are so many wider implications that will undoubtedly be swept under the carpet!

And if the quedos means that much, why wasn't the same effort put into the Manchester or Birmingham bids eh??

Oh, stupid me........of course......we ain't Larnden are we!

What about the temporary accomodation that will be needed to house the homeless that are presently sleeping in shop doorways etc for the duration of the Olympics,

KNock knock

Whose there ?

No one, just us brits knocking ourselves again !

Gentlemen, before you get too bitter about the UK doing something better than another country, might I suggest you check to see who are actually gonna get something out of this ?

Who is gonna gain from the large semi portable buildings being used to house events .. who is gaining fiscaly from the event...

Whilst I applaud your sentiment, and there can be little doubt it is well founded in some things, the overal winners will be not only the Londoners but councils and areas up and down the UK ( yes, the UK, os Scotland and a town in Wales will be benefiting from it too, though sadly I do not think N I will get too much out of it all )

And the reason the other UK bids were dropped was because the London one WILL be of benefit to others up and down the land, whereas the other bids would not have been..

There is lots of useful info about the bid and who is gonna get what on the web, and yes, it is bloody hard going to wade through it, but before you beat yourselves up too much I would urge you to read it.. I think ( with luck :p ) You will be pleasently surprised..

Tax increase comming up

Have you tried to get to work on time in London lately.

A transport system that cant cope with the traffic it has now!!!!

I agree with others, congrats to the team, pity we cant raise the same support for the education system.

I am PTA charman for local primary school, is the money being raised to pay for those little extras? NO to pay for class room needs.

If we cant afford to pay for education, nurses or decent eqiupment for the armed forces, then who's going to pay for the olympics.

While I applauld the olyimpic commitee for granting us the 2012 olympics I do have to wonder one thing. The event is going to be held August - Sept. Peak holiday season, not a problem but for the answer I heard to a question posted on the news this morning. The question related to the road network in this country and the Monaco prince, (Albert I think), was slightly concerned about the travelling for, say the sailling events at Weymouth. "Not a problem" was the reply, "Travel would be no more than 2.5 hours from London"

HAH! Do these people actually live in the real world? London to Weymouth, Peak holiday times, roads stuffed with feckin' CARAVANS!!!!!! 2.5 hours???????

More like 4 hours!

As a footnote, does this mean that by 2013 we should have a state of the art rail and road network in this country as opposed the the state of the ark one that currently exists?

I'm already completing a pre-qualification questionnaire to receive the tender to design and supply a converged IP infrastructure for the Games..........

The Olympic Commission, a Central Gov Agency issued it to me over a month ago - that's how well prepared this bid was........... and I shall milk every opportunity that comes along!
