Would a failing reg rec cause a misfire

I'm sorry Eddie.

You are still not answering my question. Did you get an ac voltage between any yellow wire and earth? :-0)

You should have about 26-30 volts ac between each pair of yellow wires but NOTHING between each yellow wire and earth.

Yes i got voltage between yellow and earth on all three wires and also got voltage yesterday when i tested just the wires individually with both probes testing between wire 1/ wire 2 and then wire 3 I tried to follow Jaws instructions maybe i am not doing it right??

There are two tests to do :

Test between the yellow wires 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 1
you should get about the same voltage across each pair.

Test between each yellow wire and earth
you should get nothing here

I have just been and run the tests again, multi meter set to ac volts 200 range.

Testing the 3 wires in the plug as Deano suggested i am getting 30 volts give or take over all 3 wires.

When grounding the multimeter onto the frame and testing each wire individually I am seeing 17-18 volts per wire, reg rec is of course un plugged for both tests.

What gives then if I am supposed to see nothing on the second set of tests.

Thanks

Bad news, Eddie.

Sadly, Eddie. The insulation has gone on your alternator. As Deano says you should never get a voltage between any of the yellow wires and earth with the reg/rec disconnected. That's why I was being pedantic! :-0)

Jaws on here sell an excellent replacement at a good price. We have to hope it has not been caused by a defective reg/rec or knackered battery. Re-read my post#5 or give me a call on 07770145597 if I can help explain your options.

That's good news, Eddie. It definitely means it is an uprated one and possibly a mosfet unit. Tell us about the battery. Do you know how old it is? If you charge it up off the bike and take it to Halfords they will load check it for you. If the battery is knackered, like a cell gone, it could be the original source of the problem. Andy always advocates changing all three together and if funds are not too tight this might be a good idea. Tell us what you know about the battery for starters! :-0)

Well done, Eddie. I would still have the battery load checked. We do not want your new alternator shagged. Seeing as most charging problems start with a under-par battery you really should get it checked. Your new alternator could make things look OK but if the new alternator is having to put out more power than it is designed for because of a poor battery your alternator windings will over-heat and melt the insulation on the windings! Sound familiar? lol

When you order the generator don't forget to order amgasket. If it has already
Been replaced you can probably reuse the existing gasket but if it's original the gasket will need to be scraped off. You may need a rubber mallet to get the cover off as well. Even if the gasket isn't holding the whole
Lot Together the magnetic force from the generator is surprisingly strong so be prepared to give it a good tug.

If you aren't aware you will need to solder the terminals onto the new generator.... Other than that it is a piece Of P.

Glad you didn't get locked on to the Reg/rec as the problem by the way....;-0));-0))

As often as it takes to ge a bonus, as you well know.

Surprised you didn't mention the rubber mallet though. Perhaps you just use a club hammer??

Ok after testing the charging system i can report the following

Across all 3 yellow wires on the reg rec plug i got 30volts ac, testing each one in turn as per John's instructions, i then tested the voltage at the battery 14.4 volts no lights and 13.9 with lights on, voltage drops when revved though?

Reg rec or not?

All within spec sufficient to not be the misfire problem..

I would be surprised if the gen change cure the misfire but it will cure any charging issues ..

Hopefully on it's way from you John!! Lol Be nice to see if it does cure the problem or not.

big soft, not so cuddly
I had the same thing and everyone said Reg Rec , I bumped into a Bird rider while out in my car and was bemoaning the Bird to him I told him the problems , misfiring , cutting out while riding along the clocks dropping off like I turned the key off , I had to jump start it 3 times, I changed the battery and it would start first time weeks after but as soon as I went out it started again, he said its the coil as he had the same problem and had swapped 2 Reg Rec out and it was the same, so i bought a coil , battery and Reg Rec from Gary and Karen at JAWS, when I changed them out the coil was like a pieces of burnt coal black and charred, changed all 3 and it runs as sweet as a nut now.

I my opinion by the way, which in our house normally counts for Sod all

Today's top tip - when replacing the reg rec reroute the wiring so the plugs are under the seat where it is nice and dry. Makes it soooooo much easier to replace next time it fails.

I do miss owning a Bird....................8rfl@
