hope this is not another high street retailer in trouble - B&Q and particularly Carpetright look to be hanging on by fingertips at the moment.

Lots of jobs on the line.:(

Plenty of good people work in retail! Today I had the pleasure of buying some furniture from the local independent that has been there since 1938 - the fourth generation of owner/manager is currently learning the ropes, a couple of the sales team have been there for over thirty years!!

A lot of good people work in retail for example me and that's only because my previous firm through me on the scrap heap after 15 years. It is amazing how many people think if you work in a shop you must be stupid

I totally agree.

Part of the conception is down to going into a lot of chain type outlets where the majority of staff have little idea of or interest in their product or customer service. I put b&q and carpetright into this category, certainly the local ones.

Wouldn't buy from Carpetright if they were the last carpet retailer on earth - don't like the sales tactics, don't like the prices and most of all don't like the fact that you pay independent carpet fitters separately when the carpet is laid - you can guess where Carpetright send you if there is a subsequent problem..... "not us guy, contact the fitter".

B&q is fine if you know what you want in terms of diy, forget it otherwise. Carpetright sales people give me the impression of being transient - they were probably selling double glazing last year and will,he working in a call centre next year. And they wear jeans in the showroom.

Other places have fabulous product knowledge - Screwfix and Travis Perkins come to mind.

B&Q employ some older people, supposedly for their wealth of knowledge, however their knowledge often consists of useless trivia & nothing whatsover about polypipe or power tools

Places like B&Q do have some knowledgeable employees the problem tends to be that they are few & far between & tend to be off sorting out other employees fuckups, our local one has a brilliant guy with 40 odd years building trade experience on the odd occasion I'm stuck its him I seek out

I was in there yesterday buying cheap CLS & another customer started to moan to me about the price of oak he was looking at, my comment that he should just go to the local sawmill & get what he wanted cut at half the price for English oak rather than that shite didn't seem to go down well with the employee that was walking past at the time :D

Hearing the words 'the price of oak' brings me out in a very cold sweat.

If anybody wants some these people are excellent, albeit still expensive!!

I've had good service from Karen and Gary. They even took bits to the Manchester bike show for me to pick up more easily.
They can't be that stupid, because I had to wait for their till to become free so I could pay.;)
