Hi
I have just got my new baby home.
I have been checking things over (like you do!) and have read all about the regulators on these bikes failing.

I need to know which regulator I have fitted to my bike i.e. do i need to replace with say a mosfet from JAWS, I have done the stator test by having a multimeter on the plug with the three yellow wires as JAWS has instructed and all voltages are the same 23v each way - wires 1,2 2,3 and 1,3 each reads 23v.
Going off JAWS' excellent instructions this suggests there is nothing wrong with the generator/stator. There are no signs of anything untoward regarding the electrics but was wondering if I still need to changes the regulator/rectifier as in September I'm doing a tour of the pyrenees with some mates and don't want it to fail.

I have put the link below to show a picture of the reg/rectifier this is fitted:

Not having owned a blackbird before any comments or advise would be much appreciated.

Cheers

On the EFI models the most common issue is the generator fails
While the OEM reg regs DO fail eventually they are no where near as delicate as the genny
The reg rec you picture is a bog standard unit..
If you do not have a problem, leave it all well alone, but I would urge you to check the loom fix is done.
One of the byproducts of the loom issue is cooked reg rec..
The earths start to get flaky which puts nasty spikes up the look which in turn kills the reg rec which in turn kills the genny !!

The loom issue was originally believed to be fixed on the digi dash models but soon started causing lots of problems ( again ! )

I think the issues started on page two of the above thread

Thank a lot JAWS. Just ordered a rectifier and CCT. The mounting of the rectifier is on the opposite side to the plugs, is this normal and if so I take it the cable from the rectifier will be long enough?
The genny is now on my list after speaking with Karen and from your feedback.
Also will upgrade the rear sock for the YSS and the front fork upgrade.
Just saving a few pennies and will order in next month or so.
Hopefully then I'm good to go! :)

Thanks again.
BTW Great super fast service from Karen.
Much appreciated. @tu*@tu*@tu*

More like luck really !! Sorry I cannot give a more thorough reply but there seems little rhyme or reason in the mix.. Some fail before others.. The only sure thing is that sooner or later they all fail ! ( as far as the reg rec, the carb one long before the efi one in general .. and as far as the genny, the EFI one before the carb one ! )

There is nothing wrong with the charging system on Birds.

;-0))

However, personally, if I were going touring I would have a spare regulator, generator (with the plug soldered on) and generator gasket in the tank bag.
Preferably a new battery as well if there is room but these can be obtained pretty much anywhere.

ProbaBly two of each in fact.

Not that I ever had any problems on my two BIRDS......8rfl@

I had an EFI for 13 years and replaced the regulator twice. The first indication I got was a blown headlight bulb , the voltage was about 16 volts going through it. Obviously it seems generators are a problem too but I never had a problem.
With any long tour you can't cater every eventually and the likelihood would be that the Bird won't let you down. I'd be more concerned about a puncture and a numb bum. I bet the bikes you'll be riding with won't be nearly as reliable as yours.

You've already been advised but the loom fix is the main thing to sort out.

BTW is there anyone can tell me where the plug is on an early digi EFI. I've done the fix on a couple of analog models.
