find it easier to pull off in second gear due to gear ratios is this common. cheers

Especially on smaller and lighter bikes.

Sounds like first gear is especially low which means lots of revs for not much go!

In the past I have had trials bike which are geared very low so they can climb up obstacles, used to pull away in third or even fourth gear!

Even with larger bikes you could consider pulling away in maybe second on slippery or loose surfaces as this will aid your traction.
