Less than 1 year into 'Bird ownership the bike has seen the many parts of the U.K. and Ireland ( my mother country ). I desperately want to bring it to the better, quieter, drier roads of the continent for a Thursday - Monday long weekend. As a new member to the forum I have missed previous trips such as Assen. Has anyone any advice on what would be an ideal short break. Ideally, a "long haul" blast to somewhere comfortable, few days in the area enjoying the roads , good food, places of interest and "long haul" blast back. a "long haul is anything more than 300-400 miles in a day.

Loire

Try the Loire Valley, (France) picturesque & interesting, pick the right time and there might be something going of at Le Mans, but some of the road can be long & straight, do your home work before you go Ie borrow, steal or go to library, look at some motoring tour guide books for that area and pick some routs/trips out before you go, I used the AA tour Guide France & Weekends across the Channel by Le Shuttle & RAC and found some fantastic places & roads off the beaten-track.
We based our self in Saumur last time which worked out reasonable central for seeing the area.
Any way have a goodun, hope the weather is better for you than it was for us last week in Brittany $%3un

Alternatively ....

Overnight ferry from Harwich to Cuxhaven, then a weekend of riding in Northern Germany, area is known as Little Switzerland, (N E of Hamburg), and then return to Harwich on the overnighter again.

Got lots of info if you're interested.

Weekend in France

w;;v Agree with others. Try Loire Valley and or Dordogne (my favourite). Fantastic roads/scenery and as a complete change from the ride down take a canoe trip down Dordogne..can do it almost anywhere on river. Canoe down and then they pick you up and bus you back to your car. Magical. No paddling required much as go with river flow. Stay off motorway unless you really want to blast as you miss some of the best roads in Europe and scenery too. If you do this just be a bit careful about petrol. See Touring issues and last few posts on this subject.

Mikew,

Me & Polly were going to go to Germany in September time and going Harwich to Cuxhaven. Would you mind sending me some details of the area. I used to be in the forces up that way and would love to see more of it on a bike.

Yep, no problem, is there anything specific that you're after?

I have a very nice touring route that I can let you have a copy of, with a couple of recommendations for accomodation.

If you know when you're going, if you want a meet up, then let me know.

PM me if you prefer.

Mike,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but unfortunately it does not look as though we are now going to be able to make it to Germany in September.
If you are still willing to share your routes and details of accommodation we would be extremely grateful.
Looks like we are going to have to go next year now. I tried to PM you but I dont seem to have that authority for some reason??

well I haven't got it restricted as far as I am aware, try my e-mail address available via my user profile. I'm away in Germany from this afternoon (thursday 12th) until Monday, so I'll catch up with any mails then.
