Sky + HD box

I think I may be being a bit thick. Mother in law has bought a place where the previous occupants had Sky. There are two cable outlets in different rooms that have been proved to be working. I have hooked up an old non HD Sky box that I had laying round and it works fine on the free to air stuff in both rooms.

I have acquired a Sky HD box and all I can get is 'no satellite signal is being received'. The old non HD box continues to work fine on either cable outlet.
The satellite dish looks like the modern Sky dish.

What am I missing?

Help?

From what I can remember the signal is free but how you translate that signal is decided on what you get.

Probably the signal through a sky box requires an active sky card. If it is a recordable choice using your free signal then your better off using a free sat or freeview box

Mystery solved! There was a Sky viewing card in the box when it came which I had removed. Put it back in, rebooted and job done. No idea why, the old box doesn't have a viewing card and is perfectly happy.m

So new HD box with recordable hard drive for freeview job done:-0). Looks like another way Sky block access to anything other than Sky using their kit:dunno:

And I managed to get the bathroom window open that was allegedly stuck and allegedly didn't have a key.

Lots of brownie points earned today

Spend them quickly, Andy. Brownie points have a half-life of less than 24 hours. :-0)

From memory, the new Sky boxes only work with a Sky viewing card in them. Even if you want the free to air channels you still need a viewing card.

I've been looking at the free to air channels recently as I'm sick of Sky continually increasing their prices & reducing the service.

One thing I noticed on their web site is that if yo don't have a viewing card, you need to buy one for free to air channels on their newer kit, but if you have an old viewing card, that will do the trick (as you have found) Andy.
