Service plans

Ok it's car related. Has anyone had any experience of service plans where you pay upfront for a number of services on your vehicle?

I've been quoted £349 for 2 services or £529 for 3 on a Ford focus is this a good way to go?

I have benefited from two service plans on almost new cars that I have purchased but never shelled out in the first place so mine were great. It does tie you to the manufacturers for service and if you do not complete enough miles you may be paying for a product that you would not need, it is however a bit of peace of mind. I would ask how much the relevant services would cost at todays prices for your projected mileage.

I have just phoned the garage and over 3 years the service costs for my car would come to £734 so I think the service plan will be the way to go

I have a five year plan on the current steed - really good value for money.

However, be aware that not everything is covered - brake pads for instance, although normal service items should be included.

As an aside, I have extended the warranty on my car - pretty cheap for peace of mind, particularly as it includes breakdown cover.

Well, this is a car forum so that's fair enough.

I'm about to pay £399 for my car for three years/36,000 miles; they don't do five year ones anymore.

However, £734 for three services on a focus sounds absolutely horrific. What is it, a Cosworth or something? Seriously, I'd have a word with a local independent garage or talk to someone like Halfrauds or Kwik-Fat and see what they charge for full and intermediate services.

Actually, £529 for three services works out at £176.33 per service, which ain't too shabby.

This stuff has got more expensive - I paid £429 for five years two years ago.

Beware the dreaded 2 year brake fluid change which Ford don't cover under their service schedule and is a right rip off, they phone you while the car is in for a service and ask if you want it done then charge extra.

As so,some mentioned on here before, it is worth shopping around for wheel and tyre insurance, bodywork damage insurance and stop loss imsurance rather than buy from the dealer - I am sure if I had I would have saved quite a few £.

Wheel and tyre insurance has proved very, very good value for me. Ahem.

The car will be under warranty so needs a ford service
You are not obliged to return to Ford during the warranty period, you merely have to have it serviced at the appropriate time and use genuine Ford parts for the warranty to be maintained.

Well, you say that Andrew but I did a lot of research and found it a mixed bag. I was lucky in that I had the time to do the legwork because I ordered my car in March and won't be picking it up until next week. Anyhoo, I ended up getting the scratch & dent insurance and the complete wheel insurance (covers wheels and tyres) directly from BMW as it was significantly, and by 'significantly' I mean in the hundreds of pounds, cheaper than what I could get with ALA. However, I bought my GAP insurance from ALA because it was £150 cheaper than BM and far superior cover. BM provide only 'return to invoice', which is self-ecxplanatory however, ALA offer a policy that is ostensibly 'new for old'. If my car is written off in two years time, they source me (or give the money) for a car at the retail price of mine at the time of purchase. I had a £5k deposit contribution from BM when I bought my car and a whopping discount which, all in amounted to almost 23% discount (Mrs P had near 30% off hers, but I guess that's what happens when you walk into a showroom on 28th March and order two new cars). Return to Invoice would be no use to me, especially if I had to replace the car with no financial incentives.

They were all I could think of, Minks. I've lived in Asia for over five years now so am very, very out of touch. As others have said though, do a bit of legwork on your computer and see what you can turn up. However, as I said above, £177 per service for three services ain't bad.
