Searching for a very specific Blackbird - Possibly in Scotland

Good stuff.

The 5th gear issue is a new one on me. Can't remember ever hearing of a Blackbird jumping out of gear before?

They are pretty sensitive to clutch fluid level - make sure the reservoir is at the right level. I stupidly let mine drop and I had a problem engaging first gear on an interesting ride home.

As an aside, the bike is a bit of an oddball - unless I am mistaken an 05 should have a silver frame and generator cover? What does the white sticker on the rear subframe under the seat say - if it is an 05 I think it will have 'XX05' printed on it. (I.e. If it is an 03 it will have XXo3 and so on).

My Carbie used to jump out of 3rd gear when I first got it. The chain was too tight (I assume putting pressure on the front sprocket) and the rear wheel was out of alignment. Sorting that out & changing the oil (dunno what came out of it but it was pretty black) seemed to improve things enormously.

After 13k miles, it would still occasionally jump out of gear, but I put that down to sloppy gear changes, when accelerating hard & not using the clutch.

Lee, the chain is way too tight so that's my first port of call, but I think it's been like that long enough to do damage.

Andy, I will check - but the bike was bought new and unregistered when my dad got it, so I can't imagine there being anything wrong. There are others coming up on a google search for '05 models in the same colourway.

It'll also get a thorough service to make sure there's nothing there causing a problem oil wise.

Not saying there is anything wrong - more intrigued!!

If my mind serves me right, I seem to think that this colour was a rarer option than others. It's lovely with the darker accents... would be nicer without the scratches though!
'Option' may be stretching it a bit!! Probably a matter of what they had laying round the factory!!
As far as I am aware the early bikes had black frames and the later were silver. Early bikes had black wheels, later had silver.

My 03 had a silver frame, the 98 was black.

If you need any bits then http://www.jaws-motorcycles.com/ is your first port of call.

Maybe dad will become a sponsor of this site. A measly £4.50 for a year gives access to all the help and technical info anyone could ever need - very helpful when the charging system packs up!! - as well as unlimited posts.

If you are not aware - semi-synthetic.. fully synthetic has led to clutch slip on a number of Birds. The Halfords own brand stuff in the maroon container served me well through about 20 oil changes!!

Just for the record, my 06 (with the white XX6 sticker under the seat) has a black frame and the silver(ish) wheels. As I've only had it a couple of months, I assume all is correct - I have no reason to think otherwise.

Here's some pics! He's absolutely over the moon, he doesn't like the video I took because it's more shock than joy, so he reckons he doesn't seem as grateful as he actually is.
Unfortunately I can't seem to upload that here anyway as I can't get it onto my Flickr account.

Now these two photos are about 12 years apart... Go figure!
