On one of the forums I frequent (netbiker), someone mentioned that she knew someone who would like to do 1000 miles in a day. This got me thinking as to why no one has organised such a challenge. So, with this in mind, I am thinking of organising said event next year. It will hopefully be held on the solstice weekend (22,23 June) and, to keep up the speed neccesary, mainly on motorways. It will be setting off and finishing in Yorkshire (centralish location, close to motorway network etc) and hopefully there will be a party afterwards. Is anyone on here interested or know anyone who is interested in this challenge? Let me know..

Gotta be done for a charity though. :yo:

I'd be right interested in this.

The main reason for the start/finish being in Yorkshire would of course be nothing at all do with the fact that you are in Bradford, would it?:neenaw:

Partly. It is also reasonably central for everyone to get to. Which is nice! I did think of organising this challenge for a charity but, as I have no experience of organising anything, I wouldn't know where to start. So any offers of help would be grateful! Also, if anyone knows of anyone who would like to sponsor this challenge in any way, post it on here. I will hopefully be getting a website up and running soon so I will keep you and other interested parties informed of any updates.
If everything goes smoothly, it may turn into an annual event so there is a possibility it may start at other locations in the UK at a later date.

Don't worry Mortis, was just doing a bit of fishing, and think I got a gentle nibble!

If I can be of any assistance, I would be glad to help (though I am not experienced in organising these sort of events)
At least you have got plenty of time for organisation - I am sure there are many kind souls here who will be able to pass on their experiences and give invaluable advice.R#?

It would be more advisable to arrange it abroad as the Motorway network is better for this kind of challenge, you make more progress in France or Holland / Germany than over here.

Too many Gatso's, roadworks, divertions etc to make it possible before tiredness kicks in.
Realistically i can go from Manchester to Bournmouth on the M/Way in around 4 hrs and its 250 miles so there.... i think it would be reasonable to do it in this country in 16-18hrs dependant upon traffic, fuel, breaks etc..
I rekon in France you could knock an hour or 2 off that.

I think heading off for 03:00am would see you best avoid any major traffic at Birmingham and Manchester on each direction AM & PM.

Agree with Rhino's idea about Europe. That said, if it was to be organised as a charity event, then I think you would raise a higher level of sponsorship if it was held in th UK - Hmmmmmmmm?!? :dunno:

Fair idea. Now, has anyone got a spare 14 miles hanging around anywhere that we could borrow?

How about Land's End to John o'Groats, UK. ... A total of 986 miles according to a cycling site.
Here's the route:

Just a suggestion
:dunno:
Yes, that was one of the routes I considered except I make it only 890 miles using motorways. I did consider going abroad and I may still consider it in the future if the event takes off. As I said, this is a challenge and the challenge would be to do the 1000 miles on terrible British roads. I am considering something like a six or seven o'clock start to miss the traffic. This is another reason I plan to do it next year so I can get everything planned properly and hopefully all the bugs and assorted problems sorted out.

Thanks for all the info. Could you tell your friends and colleagues about this and post this on any other forums you go on to gauge the interest?

Ponte Carlo to Paris! Unfortunately, that would involve two ferries which would slow things down drastically! As I said on an earlier thread, if the event takes off, I may take it abroad at a later date. One of the ideas I had is to try and visit as many countries as possible in 24 hours. But, as I said, in a few years. Watch this space!
