Do anything like this everytime you ride your bike after being parked up?
This is one I use get peeps through their RoSPA test.

Whats your view on the daily check of the EMERGENCY engine kill switch Bob.

Recently, a DSA bloke 'advised' me that they no longer like the switch used on every test, as it could wear out and then not work in the emergency it was designed for ???

Thats why on the Direct access, they made it a tell me, rather than a show me.

Its something I had not considered fully, but I tend to agree with.

He suggested once every second weekly test..

When examining an advanced candidate,I like them to advise me of their awareness of the kill switch not actually operate it as I have had probably 40 or 50 tests over the years where the bike has failed to start because of either rust or water in the switch and it (the bike) has failed to start resulting in the test having to be cancelled.

The test of the kill switch should really be done as part of the first pre ride check at the start of the day thereby eliminating the possibility of being left stranded in the middle of nowhere, and I personally prefer to see the engine stopped on the ignition switch rather than the kill switch!

Force of habit dont now where I developed it, I always stop the engine on the kill switch which means that inherently a check on the switch is part of my start routine as the fuel pump doesnt start until the switch is i the run position

Using the key to stop it I kind of count as a car thing, on the bike as the start is on a button on the bar it just seems natural that the stop is on the bar as well.

In my area the kill switch is normally a show me and not a tell me, so it's still the usual DSA constenstancy showing.

Never use the kill swicth

prolly cos i've had that many bikes that didn't have one.
Only time I've thought about them is when I've been cleaning the bike and unkowingly caught it and spent 10 minutes trying to figure out why the bike wouldn't start. Thinking it was water in the 'lectrics :blush:

This thread run it's course before i joined the forum but the topic is relevant to me at the moment so, in your experience after travelling 30 miles to meet a RoSPA examiner for an advanced motorcycling test is it then necessary to go through the pre-ride checks before starting the test or would he be happy just to see a static and rolling brake check.

What is required to be demonstrated is down to each examiner and, unfortunately, no two are the same!

If in doubt ask him what he wants to see.
