My dad had his neck broken in 1976 in a hit and run, shortly after he was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and was told he'd never work again.
After 18 months of physio and recouperative therapy he went back to work as an engine builder LOL.
He was 38 at the time, now at 69 he's planning his ride to Eastern Europe on his 70K mile CB500 Honda..
He did the Arctic Circle in 2005 on his own.......

Just take what the Docs say with a pinch of salt..

He had a heart attack also in 1988 whilst i was with him, the docs then said that if he dieted and did light execise there was no reason why he shouldn't do another 5 yrs  Honestly, if you feel right, fit and well then just keep on doing it.

The old mans attitude changed dramatically in '88' and he lives each day with a smile.

A big  to my old man..

A fantastic story Rhino! Much respect to your dad.  . Makes me feel guilty as hell moaning about my hip!

The problem I have is that after only a short ride, I can hardly move. Did two, 20 mile trips on Saturday, to Matlock to watch the Motogp, then yesterday I could hardly walk!! Feeling right pathetic after reading your dad's story though. Will have to give myself a hard kick!

Use ir or lose it is my motto: glucosamine and cod liver oil, water based exercise will all help keep you mobile

Docs always seem to say 'give up biking' - standard issue comment I've found.:bang: :bang: I've been told twice that I have to give up a favourite pastime (the first time it was horseriding and I was 10!) after breaking my back. I was able to get back to both Horseriding and Biking :yo: . I guess you just have to be aware of the higher risks? But if they treat the Osteo, then don't see why you shouldn't be fine? :dunno: Good Luck :k :k

Hiya mate,

firstly, sorry to hear your news... My Jan has it in both her hips, and she gets by on painkillers & lots of rest stops...

Our doctor, unusually wont say give up biking, as he is a biker, and knows we are. But he does say to keep an eye on it, and make to sure I dont do anything stupid on the bike which will cause Jan a lot of pain...

I have found that to be really smooth, and speed up & slow down gently, normally keeps Jan happy. The only time we found it really bothered her was when we were rushing for the ferry back from Germany last year, and I had to stop before Bolougne as she was just about in tears... 20 mins rest later & some painkillers & a drink, and we were on our way again...Just to find the boat was an hour latec7u8 cause someone had died before leaving Dover (bloody inconvenient if you ask me...LOL)

May see you again one month at matlock mate.

Chin up, as Rhino says, live each day at as it comes, and try to smile...
(harken me saying that:rolleyes: arm in plaster & full of antidepressants...)

Cheers,

Rolfy

Broke my back 4 years ago, year later 2 big ops, 8 months of work, 10 bolts and some metal plates later, was told you will never have a job other than a nice comfy office, you will never ride a motorbike again............

Heavy physio, no pain killers, am now driving cement mixers for a living, up and down the ladder washing down in and out of the cab, ride a 135bhp jetbike, ride a Blackbird and a CB500, can pick the kids up, can do gardening, etc etc........

Was told by the Drs I was pretty much a miracle heal, all I put it down to was a bollocks to that attitude, it aint gonna stop me me doing what I want to do...Yes i do think twice about doing things like white knuckle rides (Roller coasters yummyyyy) but have never not got on one, OK I may ache a bit, but sooner that than miss out on life...

Ricardo - I've got a small TENS machine that I used to use on my back - clips onto a belt loop. Just needs a battery, but to save you buying the machine straight out, I can post it to you? Let me know smix@dsl.pipex.com

Right then

Oily fish, glucosamine and chondroitin tablets from the health shop, ibuprofen bought from the chemist (assuming you are otherwise fit and healthy)
Lay off citrus fruit-seems to make joints ache

and lay off the non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, they can lead to other problems when used long term. R#?
