Checking the oil level, on the centre stand or off?

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it should be off the Centre stand while holding the bike upright with the dipstick resting on the filler, not screwed in.

Yup correct, the reason being the bike sits nose down on the centre stand giving an incorrect reading

Why does it matter where I stand?

So what about my Storm XM tyres and 6mm spacer?
They do the same.

(Just for debate)

Not quite but almost the same as it being on the stand EG possible incorrect level :-0)

In all honesty if its between the lines its usually fine but I prefer the lever to be towards the upper level all the time, with an oil & filter change I measure & fill with the correct amount as per spec then check to be sure

If a bike is really nose down on the stand & I don't have a glamorous assistant to hand for bike holding duties I lift the front so the sump is level to check

On the stand.
Not screwed in.
My recollection and is what Haynes says.

on the centre stand, nose up on a gentle incline in my back yard which compensates for the nose being down ;o)

My train of thought would be that if you have a centre stand then the dip stick would be set by the manufacturer to be done on the stand and the same if you only have a side stand.
Checking oil should not be a two man job.
After all, during manufacture its only down to dip stick length.

Honda works manual ( not a Haynes ) for the carb bike says :

Run the engine for 2 - 3 mins
Turn off the engine and support the motorcycle on the CENTRE stand

Remove dipstick and wipe it clean
Re-install dipstick but do not screw it in

Remove the dipstick and check the oil level

If the level is below the lower mark fill the crankcase with the recommended oil.

Does it say how long to let it stand after running?

Other makers recommend 2 to 3 minutes before checking, I stick with that & it seems to work fine on the bird

As there is no check valve fitted - would standing for a couple of minutes allow oil from the oil cooler return line to drain back in to the sump and raise the reading ?

Perhaps the 2 - 3 min run is to ensure the oil cooler and pipes are full first.

If you look back you will see that I mentioned 2 to 3 minutes as standing time rather than running time

As I understand it the oil wont drain from the cooler very quickly as with the engine off it is relying on gravity rather than the pump but checking a bike cold after standing overnight for example could mean that the oil has had time to drain down therefore giving a higher reading

I run all my bikes for a few minutes then let them stand for 2 to 3 before checking levels or do it after a short run out

Either way IMO its most important to fill with the correct amount of oil after an oil & filter change that gives you a base for checking levels later, you wouldn't believe the amount of people inc shops who get this badly wrong

key thing is to checkit consistently with the bike upright preferably with the bike on a flat piece of ground. TBH as long as its somewhere in between the marks I'm happy
