Nissan Navara Vs Toyota Hilux

Time to consider a new car and I was thinking about going for a double cab pickup (second hand of course). Has anyone made the swap from car to pickup and if so what was your experience? There are a lot of reports saying that they drive much more like cars these days, but are not quite there yet.

My two favoured options are Navara or Hilux. I?ve looked at various reviews and there seem to be some questions about the Nissan?s reliability and safety whilst the Hilux is more ?workman like? with fewer creature comforts. However, most review sites have both vehicles ranging from zero/five stars ? most horrid thing I?ve ever driven or owned to five/five ? the best vehicle in the world.:dunno:

The basis for this choice is I?m doing more green laneing and thinking about doing more track days so something that can move bikes would be a distinct advantage as I don?t have enough space to keep a trailer at my house. My son is also getting into schoolboy motocross as well so I?m spending more time lugging him and the associated kit round the place as well - seems like a good idea, discuss...

Navara is ok as long as the recalls have been done ( including the MAJOR engine issue on some of the early ones )
The Hilux is a very good solid bit of kit, but it is a real basic truck.
Sod all creature comforts.. Just a builders truck really.
Nice if you are JUST using it for heavy work but if you plan using it for ANY social stuff forget it.. Even you are planning on using the motor for anything over 25 to 30 miles it gets tiring due to noise and drafts

Put it like this, you want to go for a pub lunch at the rather nice local hostelry

You can get away with pulling up in a nice black Navara.. Pull up in a Hilux and they will point you to the blocked drain round the back !!

:-0) Agreed, but I do think there is something appealing about having a vehicle that Top Gear drove to the North Pole.

The newer Hilux is less bad ? or so I?ve been told

Pick ups

The Nissan "Major" engine issue was OIL Pumps 02-05....Same problem on Mitsibushi L200 But cant remember what years.......The Toyota have no such problems to date......We have lots of these Pick-ups in our area and one thing stands out about the big "Flash" ones...... the bigger the Truck and flashest alloys the bigger the :wank: driving it! .......It's a "Penis" extension thing!!!!!

Not going for the “drug dealer extras pack” I just want something to transport bikes at weekends, be good enough to put in the company car park on weekdays and comfortable enough to go on long journeys.

I have to confess I like the look of pickups and always have but I’ve just never been able to justify one until now. Still not sure I can, but on the list of things to do before I die so why wait?

I have driven literally thousands of miles in the Hilux (until they got me a Land cruiser) I drove one in Oman for 5yrs, flat out most of the time on graded desert roads and off road they are completely bomb proof. The newer models have more creature comforts than the old model. My son had a Nissan Navara with the 'pimp pak' They are more a road bias/pose machine than the Hilux. It depends really what you want. I'm sure the Navara would be okay for weekend motocross but you wouldn't buy one for your business and expect it to earn its keep. The engine problem with the Navara was, the big end/main end bearing failure often at low mileage. The Ford/Izuzu ranger is a complete bag of shite AVOID. We had them for 1yr in Oman and they spent more time in the workshop than with us, not too bad as we always had a Hilux as a courtesy car.

Toyota every time ma dad has an old landcruiser 80 series i run a toyota surf 3rd gen best thing ive run in a 4x4 landrovers are shiiiiiiiiite wont have one given 8rfl@ nissans as said engine probs mitsi look ok but have as many probs what ever you got with enjoy great in this weather with some good tyres on :-0)8ree!

I actually like land rovers but you need to know how to pick up a spanner and keep on top.

P.S don't forget to put the diff lock on in the snow and ice. I found out the hard way writing off a Discovery.

Worked for Toyota for 15 yrs, HiLux every time, great truck. Nissans are not as reliable as Toyotas and now they're owned by Renault, well it's a bit risky lol. It also depends on how old it will be. The old '2L/3L' toyota engines like to drink fuel.

for what you want it for I would get the VW transporter Panel van instead of either :bow::bow:

That reminds me of a guy I knew years ago who worked in the copper mines in (then) Zambia. He said they had several Land Rovers and 2 Toyota Landcruisers, the Landcruisers were used to rescue the Land Rovers when they got stuck or broke down lol. They HAD to buy Land Rovers, they chose to buy Toyotas8rfl@

Ok, I?m spotting a theme in the answers... Land Rover it is then :-0)

I guess the Toyota wins the day in terms of the best vehicle. The newer versions look really good so I guess it will pass muster in the corporate car park on a Monday morning along with the Jags, BMWs and Mercedes.

Next question ? I was considering the 3.0 litre diesel which seems to provide the best performance, would you choose an automatic or a manual?
