I decided to do away with the rentec rack that has served me well over the last 12 months as a topbox mount, and resolve the potential problem of soft panniers scratching the tail piece. I prefer soft panniers as I like the flexibility of them.
Firstly I got a friend to put a bend down each side of piece of 3mm CS4 steel (cold rolled mild steel). Next was to hacksaw to the required shape and I have to blow my own trumpet here as it was all done with one hacksaw blade (ok, I cheated it was an unbreakable starrett 24tpi jobbie) Anyway the plate was cut to fit a givi top box mounting plate and to include the slots on the givi plate. The idea for this was to reduce weight and stop water laying on the plate. The next job involved angle grinding the edges and finally filing using tang/2nd cut and smooth files finishing with emery cloth to final shape and finish.

I have loaded the original rentec rack/top box to 20kg with no damage. And would expect this to handle the same weight... The final weight of the rack plate and the tubular rentec rack is about the same.
Next job involved an simple job of manupulating some hot rolled steel of 20mm x 3mm flat... These can be fitted to the bike in under 5 minutes and removed easily when not reqired, they also help support the rack plate for loading up the top box. SWMBO said that the panniers are held back away from her legs and if the rails are left on the bike it gives her some hand hold options.
The panniers are supported by the top rail and the clearance between the panniers and bike tail piece is around 25mm. Also the standard rear indicators do not touch the panniers, when fitted. Total cost ?10.
