Successful start for Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies in Sepang

The first official test of the 2011 MotoGP season got underway today at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. Yamaha Factory Racing Team riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies were quick to get up to a good pace on track, both riding under last year's race times before the end of their first session despite not having ridden a motorcycle for two months over the winter break. With many parts and electronics to test over the three days, today's objective of familiarising themselves with their YZR-M1's again was a success. Reigning World Champion Lorenzo wrapped up his first session as the second fastest rider of the day, just four tenths from the top. Team mate Spies was just less than four tenths behind him in fifth.

Day two tomorrow will see both riders working on various areas of the 2011 race bike's development along with testing tyres for MotoGP tyre supplier Bridgestone. In advance of the official 2011 Yamaha Factory Racing Team launch at the second Sepang test, both riders took to the track today riding YZR-M1s with plain black carbon fibre fairing. From tomorrow however the M1 of both Lorenzo and Spies will have a special ?one-event' Yamaha Factory Racing Blue de-branded design to be filmed for a Yamaha corporate video as part of the ongoing Yamaha World GP 50th Anniversary activities. This design will only be used for the remaining two days of the Sepang test.

Jorge Lorenzo 2nd, 44 laps 2'01.977

"It's been a good start today, we tried a few things and it seemed for everything we tried it was a little bit better, not big improvements but as I said in Valencia at the test last year, the 2011 bike seems to have less wheelie so we can open the throttle earlier in the corners and in some corners I have better corner speed as well. Today was my first ride wearing Alpinestars so there were a lot of things for me to get used to. We pushed a bit more towards the end of the session and got faster, we will continue to make the step tomorrow."

Ben Spies, 5th, 24 laps 2'02.332

"Today was good. The weather forecast wasn't so great so to get as much time on the bike as we had was good. We set out to not do too many laps to avoid getting tired, it's easy to overdo it on the first day. We did enough to get my head up to speed then relaxed as we have a lot to look at over the next two days for Yamaha and Bridgestone. It's my first day with the new team and they were fantastic, everybody worked together really well. We ended up going faster than we did here last year in the race which shows my confidence in the bike and the team. There's more to come from the bike and from me too, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Team Manager for Jorge Lorenzo

"I'm very pleased with our first session here at Sepang. I'm actually quite surprised at Jorge's speed as normally after a two month break it takes him longer to get into the rhythm because he's a very smooth rider, so a break means you miss the rhythm. We had received good information at the end of the day so we have been able to make some steps and reach some decisions. Tomorrow we have some more things to test but for today we are quite satisfied."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director and Team Manager for Ben Spies

"After a long rest we have to be satisfied with the first session. Our riders used today to get back their speed and we are happy to see they were both consistently fast. Tomorrow we will start to do some work on the bikes and collect further data."

Positive start to 2011 for Bautista

Rizla Suzuki?s ?lvaro Bautista started the first test of 2011 in a positive style as he posted the sixth fastest time of the day in Malaysia.

Bautista (P6, 2?02.422, 65 laps) began the day by getting his feel and rhythm back on the Suzuki GSV-R, after the winter long test ban. He was soon on the pace and quickly got into the intense test schedule that the team has planned for the three-day test.

The Spaniard was able to run Suzuki?s latest specification engine, as well as a new chassis and some back-to-back runs on the 2011 Ohlins front forks. The team was able to complete a full day of testing, as the usual afternoon rain that is regularly experienced at Sepang never materialised. Honda?s Casey Stoner recorded the fastest time of the day.

Rizla Suzuki will be back on track tomorrow and Thursday for the remainder of this three-day test, with a comprehensive range of new and updated parts still to be evaluated.

?lvaro Bautista:

?Well, it?s been a long time since Valencia and on my first laps I thought Suzuki made a mistake and fitted a 1000cc engine in the bike, it feels so fast after a long break! But, after some easy laps, I began to get my rhythm and to ride comfortably. We did some interesting testing, but to be honest the main thing today was just for me to get back to a normal level, and in the end the bike felt nice and we went quite quick, so I?m happy. I hope the weather stays dry, we have a big list of stuff to test and I know the guys will be working late tonight to prepare everything for tomorrow ? thanks to them and I am looking forward to continuing our work.?

Strong start for Casey Stoner in Sepang
Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) got the testing season off to a fast start by leading a strong Honda charge on the first day of 2011 MotoGP testing on the sultry Sepang Circuit in Malaysia.

In only his second ride on the Repsol Honda RC212V, the 2007 MotoGP World Champion immediately adapted to the updated machine. The fastest of his 52 laps of the 5548m track was 2m., 1.574s., just .037s off the pole position time from the 2010 race. His gap to the second fastest rider, world champion Jorge Lorenzo, was a healthy.403s.

The Australian wasn't the only Honda rider to start strongly. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa finished the day with the third fastest time as he continues to recover full strength in the shoulder he injured in last year's Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi. Pedrosa was only .027s behind the pace of his fellow Spaniard, Lorenzo.

The three-rider Repsol Honda team worked well together, with Stoner and Pedrosa testing the 2010 fork, while Andrea Dovizioso, the third member of the team, tested the 2011 version.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Gresini Honda RC212V) finished with the third fastest time in his new role as team leader. Simoncelli, now paired with his 250cc rival Hiroshi Aoyama, put his RC212V to good use. His best lap among the 52 he completed put him solidly in fourth place, giving Honda three of the top four spots. It also consolidated the momentum he began building at the end of the 2010 season, which he finished strongly.

Aoyama had a very successful first day on the San Carlo Honda Gresini team. The final 250cc World Champion finished the day seventh fastest. Aoyama's 2010 campaign was interrupted by a broken back suffered in a practice crash at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Japanese rider is now healthy and hopes to remain so throughout the season.

Dovizioso was less than a quarter second off the pace of Aoyama while testing both a new engine and new chassis. Though he finished eighth fastest, the placing was deceptive: When everyone was on the harder race tyres, Dovizioso was up among the leaders.

Toni Elias, the 2010 Moto2 World Champion, began his return to the premier class by finishing with the 17th fastest time as he reacclimatizes himself to the power of the LCR Honda RC212V. Elias immediately felt more comfortable than when he first rode the bike at the end of last season in Valencia and expects the process of adapting to the premier class to continue smoothly.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V): 1st, 2m, 1.574s

"Very positive day. At the beginning it took some time to get used to the bike again, but I soon felt comfortable and we had a good day. We didn't change the set-up too much compared to the one we had in Valencia and I am pleased to see that even if the circuit is different, it still works pretty well here in Sepang. We did some work later on with the engine braking to decrease some chattering and looks like we found a good solution. In the next two days we will start testing something new, but anyway for me, it was a very good way to come back on track after the winter break."

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V): 3rd, 2m, 2.024s

"I 'm pretty happy with how things went today. My priority was to see how I was on the bike after so long without riding and the feeling has been positive. Obviously, I still have less strength under braking and lack of stability in the shoulder with the direction changes, but the cramps have gone and this is very positive for me. We have time to continue with my physical training and gain the strength that I need for when the season starts. I honestly didn't expect to do so many laps today. I started with the 2010 bike to get the feeling back, because in the second half of the season our bike was competitive and we want to begin improving from there. Then I tried a new swingarm and a new chassis, in the last two runs, and my best lap time has been with the new parts, so it's also positive. The plan for tomorrow is to test the new engine."

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Gresini Honda): 4th, 2m, 2.295s

"I am really happy. My difficult first outing at this circuit last year is now a distant memory. I felt good straight away with the new RC212V and I was immediately able to push hard. I was consistent all day and that is very positive. We tried a new position for the rear brake lever on one of the two bikes and we will try a new system tomorrow. Obviously the goal is also to keep working on the setting to try and improve the feeling with the 2011 version, although the first impression is that it is fast, powerful and performing well. We couldn't have started out any better!"

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Gresini Honda): 7th, 2m, 2.483s
"It is always difficult to get back on the bike after a two-month break, but I have to say that today went well. The bike has shown good power, good acceleration and a character that allows you to be decisive. I have already got a good feeling with the guys and that is one of our main objectives for this test. Tomorrow we will continue to work on the set-up and try to improve it again. It has been a positive first day and it has made me optimistic for the season ahead because I want to make up for lost time in 2010, when I missed six races through injury."

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 8th, 2m, 2.507s

"I'm happy because this year we are starting from a very good base. All Honda riders are very competitive so I'm confident and this is an extra boost for me. Today we tested the new engine; it has more power in the low revs and this helps me with the line. We also tested the new chassis and it has some positive and negative points and we need to understand it better. We did a comparison work with the 2010 and 2011 fork. The stability in the front has improved but we must rectify some vibrations in the middle of the corner, together with work on the suspension. I'm satisfied with the fact that it was easier to find the rhythm and with hard tyre I could lap consistently on 2.02.5. I lapped at two-tenths from the first riders when they were using the same tyre, choosing not to use the soft tyre in the end because we focused on understanding the new machine."

Toni Elias (LCR Honda): 17th, 2m, 4.238s

"I feel more comfortable now compared with the first run out in Valencia. We still have a lot of things to improve, but actually my position on the bike is good and I could lap with more stability. I lapped 30 runs on hard tyre and further 30 laps on softer compound with small improvements lap by lap. We knew that the adaptation period to this new bike takes some time, but we are positive and we are working hard to find the right chassis regulations to improve the pace."

Positive second day for Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo at Sepang
Day two of the first official MotoGP test at Sepang saw Yamaha Factory Racing Team riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies again up to speed quickly. Both riders were on the pace from the outset as they took advantage of the good weather conditions. The cooler morning session provided an opportunity for the riders to set their fastest times of the day before the track temperatures increased from noon onwards. 2010 MotoGP Rookie of the Year Spies was clearly at home on his 2011 YZR-M1, lapping the Sepang track as the second fastest rider for the majority of the day, only dropping to third in the last moments. Team mate Lorenzo was just 0.05 seconds behind him in seventh at the end of the session as he worked through some different chassis and engine settings.

Tomorrow is the final day of the test, both riders will continue to test developments of the 2011 M1 along with new Bridgestone tyres to provide some data for the MotoGP championships sole tyre supplier.

Ben Spies 3rd 60 laps 2'01.508
"Today went really well. We started out and got right up to speed. We worked pretty much just on electronics and also evaluated a couple of different engine configurations, both of which worked really well. The lap times were pretty similar so we need to work out which direction we want to go. We got a lot accomplished today, tomorrow we've got a couple more things on the engine to look at and we're going to try some tyres for Bridgestone."

Jorge Lorenzo 7th 35 laps 2'01.563

"Today we continued to work on the bike, we found some positive things and some not so good. I think we have found more traction but maybe a little vibration we need to resolve. I'm happy with the day, but it was very hot and I'm pretty tired. We've improved a lot of little things, I have to continue to work on improving my riding as well and to give the team the best explanations I can on the developments to help them move forward."

Massimo Meregalli - Team Director

"We tried some different things today and we got some good feedback. Ben had consistently good pace for the entire session today so I'm pleased. What gave us great confidence is that he had a long run with very positive results. He was satisfied with the changes we've made today so we'll see what progress we make tomorrow when we test the new tyres. In general for the team it's been quite positive, we had no problem and got good information from both sides of the garage."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager

"The second day of testing today and some mixed results, not everything was positive. There were no big dramas and the base setting we discovered yesterday continues to be good. Lap time wise we missed something this morning, but we also tried some good things on the bike over the session. It's normal in development to find some things that don't necessarily work so well and today we found one. At the end of the day it has been positive and we have more valuable information for tomorrow."

Bautista sets personal best at Sepang

Rizla Suzuki?s ?lvaro Bautista continued the first test of 2011 in encouraging form today by recording his fastest ever time at the 5?548m Sepang circuit.

Bautista clocked a time of 2?01.687 during the morning session of today?s test, faster than his qualifying time at last-year?s Malaysian Grand Prix. He completed 63 laps and finished in eighth place on the time-sheets, 0.917 from the quickest, but only 0.253 from second place.

The team was again able to evaluate many new developments to the Suzuki GSV-R, including different chassis and rear swingarm, and to make comparisons between previous parts and updated components for the machine. Bautista was happy with his day?s work and is looking forward to finishing the test on a positive note. Today?s fastest time was set by Dani Pedrosa on his factory Honda.

Rizla Suzuki has one more day at Sepang in which it plans to complete race simulation runs as well as continuing with the remainder of its intensive test schedule.

?lvaro Bautista:

?Immediately I left the pit lane this morning the feeling was more normal than yesterday ? after my first day back at work it was easier to understand everything. On my first run I set a good lap-time and this was very close to the fastest guys, except Dani who made a real qualifying lap! Much more important was that I could make high 2.01 lap-times with very old tyres, and my rhythm felt good. Also, I tried three different chassis today and the results of that test were quite clear, and we have made an improvement to front feeling and turning. The engineers have also done some good work with the traction control and this is helping me get out of the corners more smoothly.

?Anyway, now I am quite tired after 63 laps and I didn?t push for a fast time at the end of the day like many guys did ? it?s more important to understand the bike on old tyres. I am very happy with the developments Suzuki has made, and I?m enjoying myself ? I think we can have some fun this season!?

Honda's dominant on day two in Sepang
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) led the charge on the second day of testing at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia, with Honda riders sweeping five of the top six spots to confirm the off-season work done by the team's engineers on the Honda RC212V.

On a typically sweltering Malaysian day, Pedrosa threw down the marker early, improving his Tuesday lap time by almost 1.3s to on the fourth of his 39 laps to finish the day with one of the fastest laps ever of the 5548m circuit.

The lap of 2m 00.770s came close to the 2m 00.518s circuit best lap set in 2009 qualifying, and it was much faster than the fastest ever race lap. It was also comfortably faster than his team-mate Casey Stoner, who was second (2m 01.434s) at a gap of 0.664s.

Pedrosa tested a new engine, rear shocks and chassis configurations, already thinking ahead to the next test here in Sepang in roughly three weeks' time.

The Spaniard's performance was made more impressive because of his slightly diminished physical condition. Pedrosa broke his collarbone and injured his shoulder at last year's Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi and has yet to regain full fitness.

Not so for Stoner, who dominated the first day's proceedings. In his second day in factory colours, the Australian slightly improved his lap time, while turning in an impressive 60 laps. The best of the 60 came on his penultimate lap.

Stoner couldn't get the most out of the softer rear Bridgestone as he continues to gain comfort and confidence with the RC212V.

Pedrosa and Stoner stayed on the 2010 front forks, while Andrea Dovizioso, the third member of the Repsol Honda team, tested the 2011 forks. Dovi finished with the fourth fastest time, only 0.078s slower than Stoner. The Italian improved his position by four places and his time by a second overnight. Like Stoner, Dovizioso wasn't able to make the most of the softer rear tyre, though he was hopeful of an improvement on Thursday.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) came within 0.010s of Dovizioso, while finishing with the fifth fastest time of 2m 01.522s. His new team-mate, Hiroshi Aoyama, was only 0.012s off Simoncelli's pace and the fifth Honda rider in the top six.

"Super Sic" was more concerned with being on the pace on race rubber, rather than an outright fast lap on soft tyres, and on that count he was successful. He plans to conduct a full race simulation on Thursday, which he admits will test his physical condition as well as the factory RC212V.

Aoyama scored the best finish of his rookie MotoGP season here at Sepang and he continued to take advantage of his familiarity with the circuit. The Japanese rider plans to consolidate his settings from the first two days of the test for day three.

The day wasn't as kind to Toni Elias (LRC Honda MotoGP). His re-entry into the premier MotoGP class after a one-year hiatus continued to be a challenge, with the 2010 Moto2 World Champion carding the 19th fastest time. The Spaniard made a number of changes to correct issues with braking and direction change, and he was confident that there was more to come on Thursday.

The test concludes on Thursday before a 19-day break, after which the teams will reconvene at Sepang for the second test of the pre-season.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V): 1st, 2m, 0.770s
"I think it's the first time I've ridden so fast on this track, but you're just fresh in the morning and I did four very good first laps. I was not looking for a time, but I saw that the track conditions were good and I pushed. The closer you get to the limit, the clearer the changes you are doing on the bike become, which lead you in the right direction. Today I tried the new engine, which has improved from Valencia, some chassis configurations and rear shocks. Tomorrow the plan is to continue comparing both bikes and it would be great to come away with the chassis and engine decided for the next test."

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V): 2nd, 2m, 1.434s

"Yesterday we really didn't expect the best time, today we expected a bigger difference with the soft tyre - but with the chassis we chose we just couldn't get the best out of the tyre. Tomorrow maybe we can focus a little more to compare the chassis again and then see which direction to go from there. We've got a few other small things here and there but they can wait until the next test. Now I'm starting to understand the bike a bit better and when I ride it, it feels more like home."

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 4th, 2m, 1.512s
"I'm satisfied with the work done today. We have a good base that works well on different tracks. We started comparing again the 2010 and 2011 front fork and decided to stick to the 2011 version because it allows me to brake harder even if a small vibration still remains in the middle of the corner. I'm very happy with the pace I had today, but I am still not happy with my ability to improve my lap time when I try to push harder on the softer tyre."

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 5th, 2m, 1.522s
"I am really happy with today and, apart from the 'stratospheric' time set by Pedrosa, in race set-up I have been consistently amongst the best. We have improved the set-up compared to yesterday and experimented with some different electronic solutions. I can say that the base set-up of the bike is good and everybody, myself and the team, is finding that with more experience we are able to consolidate our work more. Last year when we spoke with the telemetry engineer from Honda we were struggling to understand but now everything is easier. After a positive first test at Valencia this is good confirmation for us at a track I have never really been fast at. So I am confident about the future and tomorrow we will try a race simulation, my physical condition permitting, of course, because as usual here in Malaysia the heat is tremendous!"

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 6th 2m, 1.534s

"Today we opted to use a soft tyre to try and improve the set-up. I rode both bikes and we tried a number of different settings on each to make back to back comparisons with the balance and things like that. At the start of the day I was struggling a little but by the end we had improved and I could have maybe even pushed a little harder. I have improved my best lap time from yesterday, so that is a positive thing and tomorrow we will look for more consistency using the combined settings from the things we found with each bike today."

Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP): 19th, 2m, 4.026s
"It has been another full day for us as we are trying several solutions to find the right setting. I still have a strange feeling in the braking and in changing direction in the curves, so we had to change many things during the whole session. We are still very positive as we do have the experience, the will and the parts to improve our performances."

Sepang MotoGP official tests - day 2

The rain that was predicted for the second day of testing in Sepang, Malaysia, never appeared, and both Ducati Marlboro Team riders were able to take full advantage of the conditions, starting from the track's 10:00 a.m. opening. Valentino Rossi finished approximately 20 minutes before the day ended at 6 p.m., satisfied with the work carried out on the GP11, and with status of his still-healing shoulder.

Nicky Hayden lowered his best lap time from yesterday by over a second, and he hopes to take a more decisive step forward during tomorrow's final of the first winter test of 2011.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati MotoGP Team) 11th, 2'02.379 (62 laps)

"We've been quite lucky with the weather, it rained the first two days I was here, but it's been sunny since the test started. Things definitely went a little bit smoother today-we dropped over a second from the lap time-but the gap to the front is still pretty big. I had a problem with vibration, and we spent a lot of time working to eliminate that. We're going in the right direction, and we just need to keep taking small steps. We checked a lot of fork settings, some riding positions, and different geometry. It's cool to see that the team atmosphere is really positive, not just between me and Valentino, but with the engineers too. I'm not happy to be this far off the pace, but it's still early."

Valentino Rossi (Ducati MotoGP Team) 13th, 2'02.597 (42 laps)

"I'm happy because I was able to ride again today. I did another 42 laps, which is reassuring. Even when I work my shoulder hard, I'm finding that it doesn't get worse, and I don't suffer too much, to the extent that I was able to start again this morning without having lost anything compared to yesterday. Actually, the shoulder is even getting better as I ride, and I'm able to make the movements that are required. Obviously, it's still a handicap, because eventually I begin to lose strength and the pain increases, but we were able to do some good, consistent work. We tested some new fairings, trying out the aerodynamics. There's still a little vibration at the front that we weren't able to eliminate, but we have some cards we can play tomorrow to address that. We have to get a little more experience to better understand the bike's reactions when we change tires, from soft to hard and vice versa. If the weather stays nice, the track conditions will continue to improve, and I think lap times could drop a bit. Naturally, beyond feeling increasingly comfortable on the bike, one of our goals is to be able to ride it more easily. We're satisfied with the progress we're making.

Rizla Suzuki upbeat despite Bautista being sidelined on final day

Rizla Suzuki has completed the first test of 2011 in positive spirits, even though ?lvaro Bautista was unable to take part in the final day of testing at Sepang due to illness

Bautista had two successful days at the Malaysian circuit, recording his fastest ever time over the 5,548m track and evaluating a huge amount of new and updated parts for the Suzuki GSV-R. He managed to make one short run today, but came back to the pit-box and had to stop riding due to severe stomach cramps that had affected him all test and got worse today. Bautista returned to the team?s hotel and although he came back to the track later in the day, he was unable to resume riding.

Team Test Rider Nobuatsu Aoki took over Bautista?s riding duties for the rest of the test and was able to do the final assessments of the latest specification engine, as well as chassis tests and comparisons of different engine maps and electronics. His input and data will be very useful as the team now return to the factory to continue the development of the machine in time for the start of the season. Honda?s Marco Simoncelli recorded the fastest time today.

Rizla Suzuki and Bautista will next be in action at another three-day test in Malaysia, which gets underway on Tuesday 22nd February. The first round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship is scheduled for Sunday 20th march at Losail in Qatar.

?lvaro Bautista:

?I am not feeling well at all, I have a constant feeling of sickness and it hasn?t improved all day. I tried to ride the bike this morning; I really wanted to use the good track conditions and try to do my first 2?00 minute lap-time of Sepang! But immediately I made the first lap, the physical effort made the sickness worse and it was just impossible. So, I must say sorry to the team and I am also very disappointed for myself. But the guys keep reminding me that there are no points or prizes for today?s lap-times, and we made a lot of work in the last two days, so I guess it?s not a big problem. Also, Nobu did a good job and tested a lot of stuff so I hope this helps me next time. Anyway, I am really happy about the potential in the 2011 Suzuki and with my team - I can?t wait to come back in a couple of weeks.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?Despite today?s physical problems for ?lvaro we have to be satisfied with the work we?ve got through, especially considering that it was raining so heavily for a few days before the test. It?s difficult for us to draw big conclusions ? because the Suzuki has always shown good potential in Malaysia ? so the guys have been very careful to make sure that all the test results are related as much as possible to improving the areas we need to rather than looking for the ultimate Sepang setting. This meant a lot of work on old tyres and a lot of laps! Alvaro was awesome on the first two days and is starting to look like he really owns the bike now; we all know he?s a racer rather than a tester so the lap-times are encouraging.

?Nobu stepped in today and did a lot of very detailed work, so the day certainly hasn?t been wasted. Thanks to him and the full team ? it?s been a tough winter for everyone at Rizla Suzuki, but we?re all very committed to doing the best we possibly can in 2011.?

Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies wrap up a successful test at Sepang
Today saw the final session of the first official MotoGP test of 2011 at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. Yamaha Factory Racing Team riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies spent the three days on track evaluating a number of development steps for the 2011 YZR-M1 ahead of the new race season which kicks off next month. Lorenzo's session focused on a series of shorter runs as he continued evaluating the various developments, impressing his team as he maintained a faster pace through the afternoon despite the increased track temperatures. The reigning World Champion finished the day in third position, just 0.088 seconds off the top of the time sheets. New factory rider Spies was again among the fastest riders on track for the majority of the day whilst working through various electronic settings on his bike. This test also marks the first time the Texan rider's complete crew have worked together.

The riders will now travel to Bangkok for public appearance in the city on Saturday 5th of February, then heading home for a rest in advance of the second official test here at Sepang on the 22nd February.

Jorge Lorenzo, 3rd, 46 laps 2'00.811

"I'm very happy after the three days, it has been one of the best winter tests, normally we have more issues to feel good. The bike feels better but we still need to improve some points. I think the next test will see us take the next step. This afternoon when it was really hot on the track I still managed to put in a few fast laps which has given me the confidence that we are heading in a good direction. Ben is doing a very good job, I spoke with him yesterday and we discussed many things about the bike, he's a good team mate."

Ben Spies, 5th 60 laps 2'01.002

"For the second and third day we did very consistent times so I'm very happy with it, it shows the consistency of the bike. There are some things we still need to work on. We tested two configurations of engine and we know which direction we want to go in now which is great. We also worked on some electronics for fuel consumption without compromising lap times and we found a good solution for that as well. We'll come back with some different goals in two weeks to look at being a bit faster and also test some different tyres. We've definitely done what we needed to do here. It's been good riding alongside Jorge, we've both worked hard to deliver important information which the team can now take away and work with."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Team Manager
"Jorge feels quite comfortable on the bike. He's got more patience this year and has taken a very considered approach to the test. I'm happy that we've completed a successful test with both riders on good form having blown off their cobwebs. We have enough data to decide which direction we have to go in now for our next visit here which was our first priority. We've seen it's very competitive over the last couple of days with more riders than last year able to compete for the podium so I think it's going to be a very exciting season."

Massimo Meregalli, Team Director
"A good final day for Ben today, again he was straight up to a good pace which he was consistent with over the session. This was the first opportunity for all of Ben's crew to work together, I am very satisfied to see there were no problems and they fit together well. Overall as a team we are pleased with this Sepang test, everyone has worked hard to ensure that on both sides of the garage we have tested everything we needed to. We can now go away and prepare for our next session here later in the month where we are confident we will make another step forward in our development for the 2011 bike to be ready for the start of the season."

DUCATI MOTOGP TEAM ENDS FIRST TEST WITH MAJOR PROGRESS

The first pre-season MotoGP test of 2011 ended today at Malaysia's Sepang circuit. Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden were able to take advantage of three full days on the track with no rain, a rare occurrence in this Asian country, and that enabled the Ducati MotoGP Team to return to Italy with a large quantity of information and data that can be used to continue the development of the GP11.

Valentino Rossi pronounced himself very satisfied with the progress made on the GP11's setup, allowing him to drop his best lap time by over seven tenths compared to yesterday. Despite being limited by his still-healing shoulder, the Italian was also happy with his physical progress and with the work done by his team.

Nicky Hayden also improved each day, and he looks forward to seeing the fruits of his labor at the next test, which will once again take place at Sepang, February 22-24.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati MotoGP Team) 8th, 2:01.534 (60 laps)

"It's great to be back here, and to be back on the bike. We had three important days with a lot of work to do. Of course I don't like to still be so far away from the leaders, but we've reduced the gap every day. Today it looked like it could rain at any time, so we did a lot of laps in the morning and found some stuff we like. We chased the chatter a lot, which cost us time trying to figure out what's going on. Last year, that was something we only had a problem with at this one track. We don't want it anywhere, but it could be a problem that's not related to the GP11 in general and is specific just to this track. We also tested some tires for Bridgestone and gave them some information that can help down the road. We realize there's still a lot of work to do, and that starts with the rider. When we come back, we'll keep reducing the gap to the front guys."

Valentino Rossi (Ducati MotoGP Team) 10th, 2:01.842 (52 laps)

"I'm very happy because before coming here, I expected to do 20, 30 laps per day, and as it turns out, I did around 40 each of the first two days and over 50 today. Of course I was really finished by the end, in part because the rest of my body has to work differently; my left arm has to do extra work, so it's very tired. But I'm really happy with my shoulder because it's improving day-by-day, and even after the stress of having ridden a MotoGP bike at the limit, I don't have any problems: now it's just a question of strength. My mobility has improved a lot, and I no longer think my physical limitations cost me a second; let's say I lose five or six tenths, especially on braking and in corner entry. Anyway, we worked well today too, and we were able to collect a lot of data and solve the chattering problem we were experiencing. Obviously, there's still a lot to do, but compared to the start of the test, we've definitely gotten closer to the base setup we're looking for. There's no need to change the Desmosedici's character; we need to take advantage of its best characteristics-its stability and its engine-and improve the other areas, especially the in-corner behavior, to make it turn better. In any case, the overall evaluation of the test is definitely good; today we're a second off the top riders, and also in the afternoon, riding with race tires, the distance stayed around seven or eight tenths. I still have to do more kilometers in order to understand other aspects of the GP11 but, although I have to change my riding style a little, I now feel much more at home with the Ducati."

Promising Start for Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies at Sepang Second Test

The second official MotoGP winter test of the off-season saw a promising start for the Yamaha Factory Racing riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo today. As with the first test just under three weeks ago, the riders enjoyed blazing sunshine on track, with track temperatures going from 39 up to 46 degrees. World Champion Lorenzo made some set up changes over the lunch period, finding a highly effective setting that enabled him to deliver consistently fast laps through the afternoon, closing in to end the day in third just 0.48 seconds from the top of the timesheets. Team mate Spies spent his morning getting used to his bike after the break then worked on some different suspension settings. The Texan finished the session in sixth just 0.82 seconds from the front having used just two sets of tyres over the day.

Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha Factory Racing
"Today was a good day for me, we worked on the traction to improve it from the previous test which helped us a lot in the set up, I'm now very satisfied with it. We have our chassis for 2011 now and we are working on it as well as our engine spec. With the improvements we've made we can now brake a little later and enter the corners a little more quickly as well so I was able to do some good fast consistent lap times this afternoon when it was still very hot on the track."

Ben Spies, Yamaha Factory Racing
"Today we came to this test with the engine configurations we're going to race with so both bikes have that. We just warmed up in the morning and spent the afternoon on one set of tyres. We set our fastest lap of the day when it was very hot and mid race distance on a hard tyre. We're saving some tyres for the end of the test when the track's good. We worked on some race set up and I also worked on some different riding styles. We'll start again tomorrow with plenty more to do. We tried a couple of shocks and found a few tenths and were still consistently fast on used tyres which was promising. It's definitely a good day and I'm happy with it."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Team Manager
"We had a very hot day today in Sepang with sky high temperatures. As a result there was quite a struggle to find grip. In the afternoon it was getting better and we found some really positive things which helped us find some good traction which is important here at Sepang. Finally we are quite satisfied with today's results."

Massimo Meregalli, Team Director

"It was a very productive day for Ben. We worked on the set up of the bike and made a lot of laps. He was still able to put in a very good lap at the end when the tyre was used which gives us a lot of confidence. Tomorrow we will push on to look for a fast lap time. Jorge was also consistently delivering a good pace, the crew found a good set up and it was clear this afternoon that it was working well for him. Both riders are very positive about their crew performance so we are very satisfied with the team."

Rizla Suzuki begins second test in detailed fashion

Rizla Suzuki has begun the second pre-season test of 2011 with an in-depth evaluation of front and rear suspension parts and settings, and electronic control strategies to further refine the Suzuki GSV-R

?lvaro Bautista (P10, 2?02.224,), completed 48 laps of the 5,548m Sepang circuit today as he worked thoroughly with his crew and the Suzuki engineers to find solutions to a number of different situations and conditions that the GSV-R might face this season.

Bautista was ably supported today by Team Test Rider Nobuatsu Aoki at the Malaysian track. Aoki joined the team directly from Suzuki?s private test track and completed 57 laps of the Sepang circuit in temperatures of up to 35?C. His feedback and data acquisition will be valuable for the Factory as it prepares the bike ready for the forthcoming season. Honda?s Casey Stoner recorded the fastest time of the day.

Rizla Suzuki has two more days of comprehensive testing ahead of it, which Bautista, Aoki and the rest of the team will use to test a number of new and updated components and to fine tune many electronic control strategies, suspension settings and other intricate details of the 2011 Suzuki GSV-R.

?lvaro Bautista:

?Well, I feel much better today than the last time I did some laps here - then it wasn?t so nice with the sickness! Today I wanted to ride in a calm way and concentrate on the details that we had to work on. Also, last time here in Sepang we really struggled to use the hard rear tyre, so we did many laps on it today and made some progress. Then finally we put in some softer tyres ? the same as I used in the race last year ? and the feeling was really smooth and very easy to make a low 2.02. We didn?t make an exciting lap-time today but we improved the bike, especially on corner exit where it now feels much smoother. I?m looking forward to pushing a bit harder tomorrow.?

VALENTINO ROSSI AND NICKY HAYDEN START SECOND SEPANG TEST ON THE RIGHT FOOT

Today marked the beginning of the second winter MotoGP test at Malaysia?s Sepang Circuit, where the work will continue until February 24. The Ducati Marlboro Team riders took full advantage of an entire day without rain, although the temperatures were higher than they had been during the three-day test at the beginning of this month.

Valentino Rossi continued his important work on the GP11?s setup, completing 53 laps and choosing some base settings on which his crew plans to concentrate in the future.

Nicky Hayden worked on his setup in an effort to reduce chatter, and despite a slow fall just before the lunch break, he was satisfied in the end with the progress he?d made.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Marlboro Team) 9th, 2:01.999 (53 laps)

?We can be satisfied with today as a first day, because we?re a second from the top, like we were at the end of the first test but without trying a late ?time attack? with the soft tyre like the others did. For the most part today, I was between fifth and sixth place, which is the goal we had set. I?m still losing about three tenths due to the shoulder, because I?m still stronger in the left turns, whereas I?m normally the opposite; the rest we?ll have to find by working on the bike. I?m also happy because we spent all our time on the hard tyres, which we struggled with before today. In the end, we chose one of the two setups that we had settled upon at the last test, and that will now be our base to work from, and the one on which we?ll concentrate our efforts in the next couple of days.?

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro Team) 12th, 2:02.680 (60 laps)

?It?s good to be back at Sepang, working on and developing the GP11. We spent the morning checking a few things and confirming what we had learned the last time we were here. Everything pretty much went according to schedule, except I had a little crash in Turn 1 toward the end of the morning session. It was really hot, and I lost the front and tipped over, but I was going slow and didn?t do any damage to myself or the bike. Today we experienced less chatter than we had last time, so that?s quite good. We need to keep reducing that over the next two days and also find some more traction, so we?ve got plenty to keep us busy.?

Honda men continue dominance of Sepang
Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) and team-mate Dani Pedrosa picked up where they left off just a few weeks ago by sweeping the top two spots on the opening day of the second MotoGP test of the winter in Sepang, Malaysia.

When the previous three-day test here ended almost three weeks ago, Stoner finished with the third overall time, just behind Pedrosa, while Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) finished best in class. But today, on another typically tropical day on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Stoner was back on top, as he'd been on the first day of the earlier test

The 2007 world champion spent the opening day comparing a stiffer 2011 chassis to the 2010 version. His quickest tour of the 5548m track was 2m, 0.987s on the 48th of 53 laps, a time which was just off his best from the prior test. It was also .373s faster than Pedrosa's best time, set on the 43rd of his 46 laps. Pedrosa, who'd finished the previous test with the second fastest time, worked on electronic mappings and improving stability under braking, one of the key improvements of the latest iteration of the RC212V.

Most important to Pedrosa was his physical condition. The more than two week gap since the last test has given his surgically repaired shoulder time to continue to heal, which has allowed him to increase his strength through training.

Andrea Dovizioso, the third member of the Repsol Honda team, finished the first day with the fifth fastest time of 2m, 1.747s. Dovizioso was encouraged by the improvement the electronics made in engine braking on the rear end, which was one of his areas of concern last season. The engineers not only improved stability on the rear, but also decreased the chattering.

The San Carlo Gresini Honda teammates finished together, with Hiroshi Aoyama in front of Simoncelli. Aoyama was the iron man today, picking up speed as he completed 73 laps in the heat. It was his 73rd and final lap that stood out as his personal best. Simoncelli's best of 49 laps came early, on lap 13, while he concentrated on the race set-up of his factory Honda RC212V.

Aoyama was comparing a number of new components to the more established pieces and found he was more comfortable with the original parts. Now the team is focused on finding a direction for the final two days of the test as the season fast approaches.

Simoncelli didn't find track conditions optimal and chose to work on a race set-up, rather than chasing a fast lap time. With well worn tires he was able to lap nearly a second quicker than he had during last year's race. Simoncelli will continue to work on development before fitting the softer rear rubber that many ahead of him put to such good use.

Toni Elias (LCR Honda RC212V), the 2010 Moto2 World Champion, continued to adapt to the MotoGP machinery by ending the day 13th overall. The Spaniard's confidence continued to grow as his pace increased throughout the day, with his best time coming on his 63rd and final lap.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V): 1st, 2m, 0.987s
"We had a really good day today. From the beginning I felt more comfortable with the bike again, like I understood the bike a little better. We managed to work on set-up, but we are still doing a chassis comparison, finding strong points and weak points on both. It's difficult to choose one or the other. Whatever set-up we throw at them we seem to be able to run pretty similar lap times. We're very happy with the progress we made today and everything and everybody seems to be working well."

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V): 2nd, 2m, 1.360s
"We made the most of the test today, which is a good job, because it looks like tomorrow we will get some rain. In the morning, we focused on some different electronic mappings to improve the entering and exit of the corners and in the afternoon we did some set-up modifications on the chassis to improve the stability on braking. The track temperature was high at the middle of the day and the track was quite slippery, but we did a good test and tomorrow we will work on smaller details. Also, physically my shoulder felt better on the bike than in the first test. I had two more weeks and I've become stronger from training, so my condition is getting better."

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 5th, 2m, 1.747s
"I'm really happy about how we have started this second test. Honda engineers have made a very good job on the engine brake with the electronic system to improve the feeling on the rear and these are really good because, I have to say, that it was our main problem last year and we couldn't make such a big step forward as we did today. We have decreased the chattering compared to the first test and the stability on the rear, so I'm very satisfied. We were able to be fast from the beginning and, even though we were not looking for a lap time today, we tried three different tyre compounds and we had a good pace with all of them."

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Gresini Honda): 7th, 2m, 1.939s
"I did a lot of laps and a lot of work. I have done several comparative tests and found a different feeling, but in the end I was feeling much better with the technical parts that I already knew. Tomorrow I will continue to do the work, but it certainly is not easy to find a good condition with new solutions and, anyway, we will see. In any case, it was an interesting day to understand which direction to take to continue to work successfully for the season that is approaching."

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Gresini Honda): 8th, 2m, 1.996s
"We have resumed from the last test of twenty days ago always here at Sepang. Today the track conditions were not optimal and, in any case, I have not tried for a lap time, but we have engaged in many trials. We tested different set-ups and electronics and will continue to do so tomorrow. I'm pretty happy because the tyres had twenty laps and could make for interesting times of around 2 '02. Honestly, we're a little far from first because we have a gap of a second, but I am confident because I have not used the very soft rubber. I repeat, as a first step we are not far from the best and so I'm happy."

Toni Elias (LCR Honda): 13th, 2m, 2.779s
"Today I am really happy because we have found some directions and I could lap with more confidence. On these conditions it is not easy as the track surface reached 61 degrees today, but I wanted to take the most of the bike despite the heat. Basically, we have worked to develop the machine base set-up using the data we gathered before and my pace is getting better lap by lap. We didn't make an exciting lap-time today, but we aimed to improve the bike working on chassis geometry and suspension regulations. Of course there is still work to do, but I am more confident now because we took a first step forward."

Strong Performances for Spies and Lorenzo on Day Two at Sepang

The second day of the three day test at Sepang saw Yamaha Factory Racing riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo again testing in sweltering conditions with track temperatures soaring through the day. Despite the heat it was straight down to business, both riders breaking under the 2.01 second laps swiftly. Texan factory newcomer Spies again spent another day delivering smooth fast laps, finding some extra grip on track through chassis changes. He suffered a small crash at the end of the afternoon session at turn seven but was unhurt and upbeat about his day. At the end of the test Spies stood fourth in the timesheets, 0.65 seconds behind the leader.

Team mate Lorenzo took the opportunity of today's sessions to re-confirm some setting changes, as with Spies, the Mallorcan World Champion was consistently quick and running under the 2.01 mark for the majority of the day. Lorenzo wrapped up this afternoon in fifth position just 0.76 seconds from the top of the timesheets.

Ben Spies, Yamaha Factory Racing Rider, 4th, 2'00.824, 54 laps
"I think we had a really successful day, we tried a little bit of a different chassis set up to try and improve the rear grip and we definitely succeeded in that. We did a few long runs and were quite fast on a hot track so it has been really productive finding how to be consistent in the heat. It's a pity I made a small mistake at the end of the day however I think we've gained a lot, especially with the rear grip of the bike."

Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha Factory Racing Rider, 5th 2'00.931, 45 laps
"It was a hard and hot day today, we tried the test bike as well as my 2011 bike to reconfirm a number of new developments. We confirmed that the direction is right so we will continue tomorrow with this direction on my M1. We've definitely improved the traction a lot, although we could still do with some more power."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager
"Today was again very hot, although maybe not as hot as yesterday. We used the day for back to back test on all our focus areas, Jorge improved on last year so all the results were quite positive and we confirmed what we felt before. We were missing a bit of grip today which we couldn't find, the track conditions changed a lot over the day so we need to check our data and see where we can find some more."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director
"We had another interesting day with Ben, learning quite a lot. We worked a lot in weight distribution and got some good feedback. At the end, apart from the crash, Ben was very happy with the solutions we've found during the session.

Jorge today made a few back to back comparisons providing positive confirmation on the improvements to the bike. Tomorrow he is going to start with the best combination of today's results. Overall we took another step forward as team, both sides having a clear positive direction to move in."

FLU STOPS ROSSI AT SEPANG, HAYDEN CONTINUES WORKING ON THE GP11?S SETUP

Suffering from flu symptoms, Valentino Rossi didn?t take to the track during today?s second of three days of testing at Sepang. The Italian rider was feeling weakened by fever and a cold when he arrived at the track this morning, and after consulting with the team and with doctors from the Clinica Mobile, he returned to his hotel, where he underwent anti-flu treatment. The hope is that the unplanned day off will leave Valentino in better condition for tomorrow?s final day of testing.

Nicky Hayden?s second day of testing didn?t bring the results he had hoped for, but the American worked closely with his team in an effort to take a step forward for tomorrow?s final day.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro Team) 12th, 2:02.208 (44 laps)

?It wasn?t the smoothest day, as we had a couple of time-consuming glitches. We had planned to put on some fresh tyres at the end to see how good the changes we?d made really were, but we had a small problem with the gearbox near the end, and there wasn?t time to go back out. We still did 44 laps though, and it was a pretty solid day overall. The team really worked hard today, so thanks to them as always. Our gap to the front is still quite big, but we?ve definitely managed to get the chatter a lot better. It?s not completely cured, but it?s good enough that we can focus on some other stuff. I?ve got a lot of work to do tomorrow, so hopefully we can take a big step and leave here positive.?
