Yamaha head to Japanese homeland for first of flyaway treble

The Fiat Yamaha Team heads to Yamaha's homeland of Japan this week for the first in a punishing triple-header of 'flyaway' races in Japan, Malaysia and Australia. There are just five more races still left to go and championship-leader Jorge Lorenzo and his team-mate Valentino Rossi are determined to record a few more top results before the curtain comes down on the year in early November.

Lorenzo took a superb win at Motegi last season, passing his team-mate to take a memorable victory. The 23-year-old loves the track and is looking forward to getting back on the podium this time out, having missed out for the first time this season at the last race in Aragon. The Spaniard leads the championship from 56 points from Dani Pedrosa but, despite the points gap, he knows that he can not afford any mistakes if he is to realise his dream of clinching a first premier class world title.

Nine-time champion Rossi also has happy memories of the Japanese circuit, having won there in 2001 and then again with Yamaha in 2008, when he sewed up his eighth world title. He arrives in less than perfect shape this time however after an injury-hit season, with his damaged shoulder still limiting his power and capacity to ride. He knows that the right-handed Motegi track will be extra hard on his body this weekend but is looking forward to Sepang and Phillip Island, which he hopes will be a little easier, as he looks to finish his difficult season on a high.

Motegi has been a victim of the weather over the last couple of years, with qualifying cancelled in 2009 due to torrential rain and then the ash cloud earlier this year meaning the entire race had to be postponed, hence its delayed appearance in the calendar now. Designed in 1997 as a test venue, Motegi features a somewhat geometric track layout. The surface offers good levels of grip without being overly abrasive but the proliferation of second gear turns, linked for the most part by mini-drag strips, means braking and acceleration are the main prerequisite to a fast lap time.

Jorge Lorenzo - "Get back on the podium"
"Motegi is Yamaha's home and I always feel proud to ride there. Last Year I got my first victory at this track in MotoGP and it was one of the best moments of the season. I like Motegi and I think it can be great for us also this season. The main goal is to get back on the podium and continue getting as many points as possible. We will try to be fast from Friday and start this run of three races as well as we can.

Valentino Rossi - "We will do our best"
"Aragon was a hard weekend, both because we couldn't find the right setting for our M1 and because I had a lot of trouble with my shoulder. The leg is now almost back to normal again - I have even started running - but the shoulder is a problem and we know now that this is not going to change until we have time to treat it properly. I have some great memories from Motegi, especially winning the championship in 2008, but I am expecting this weekend to be quite difficult on my body. We have a hard three weeks ahead but after this race two of my best tracks are coming up, and I am hoping for some good results. We will do our best and see what happens!"

Wilco Zeelenberg - "We can't relax too much!"
"After missing out on the podium for the first time this season we know that we have some work to do, because our rivals have taken a step forward. Jorge has a strong lead still but we can't afford to relax too much because anything can happen. He likes Motegi a lot and we hope that we will be quickly able to find a good setting for our M1. As always our target will be the podium and as many points as we can take without risking too much."

Davide Brivio - "A tough run of races"
"Valentino is understandably disappointed that he isn't in as good physical shape as he had hoped, and this is a pity for him because the leg is really quite good now! Aragon was hard on him but generally our bike goes well at Motegi so we hope it will be better, even if the nature of the track will still be hard on him. This run of races is tough on everyone but we will be working as hard as ever and hoping for some good results as we head towards the final races. Unfortunately I had to miss the last round because of a problem with my back; I still have some pain but I have managed to fly to Japan and I am really looking forward to getting back to work."

ASIATIC TRANSFER FOR THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM. SUNDAY THERE IS THE JAPAN GRAND PRIX

The Japanese Grand Prix that will take place next Sunday on Motegi circuit, should have been the second appointment of the 2010 MotoGP calendar. Unfortunately, due the Icelandic's volcano Eyafjallajokull who has in April completely paralyzed all European flights, the Grand Prix has been moved to the first weekend of October, becoming the fourteenth round of the season with just five races to the end of the Championship. Japan is one of the fixed stages of the Championship, Sunday there the twelfth top class race on Motegi circuit. But if we consider the number of stages, the first overall Japan circuit is steel Suzuka which have hosted in the past sixteen top class Grand Prix. The Pramac Racing Team had in the past a great relationship with this track, having got here one of two victories in its young history, with Makoto Tamada in the 2004. During the following seasons the results where not so good for the Team, with two eighth place as best placements. The eighth position where obtained by Alex Barros in the 2007 and by Mika Kallio last year. It is from the Finn rider that the Team will wait a good result on this track, also because he had won here in the past three Championship races.

Paolo Campinoti - Team Principal Pramac Racing Team

"Aragon's result certainly does not repay the work done by the Team, but unfortunately we knew that we would have suffered more than other Team on that circuit. I feel sorry for Mika who started really well the race and that was having , in the first few laps a very good race peace. This has gave us the impression that he could be able to overtake the other riders and conquer a good position. Aleix's race was fairly good, and I'm sure that if he had start the race a few more forward position he would surely have been able to gain a better position. At Motegi I had one of the biggest sport emotions since Pramac has decided to follow the MotoGP adventure in the 2002. Here we got the second victory of our history in the 2004 with Tamada, a wonderful result for us and for a client team."

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team

"I'm sorry for Aragon's race. I would like to enter in the top ten and fight for an important position with the other riders, but unfortunately my starting position on the grid was not the best. During the race, then I had a rhythm so steady and fast that has allow me to fight right away with the other riders. In the last few laps I tried to give my best even risking to fall, but unfortunately I had to settle for the tenth place. I know enough about Motegi circuit, here I got an good seventh place in 2008 driving a 250 cc. It will be very for me to have the right feeling with the track since the first free practice on Friday in order to try to improve my times lap after lap and try to gain a good starting position on the grid. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team

"Too bad for Aragon's outcome, arriving as the last rider is certainly not exciting. I cannot wait to be able to redeem early this bad result in the next Japanese Grand Prix that will be my thirtieth MotoGP Grand Prix. Motegi is a circuit where I had the most rewarding of my career. On this track, I had won three races, two riding a 125 cc and one during my rookie season in 250 cc. Last year in my second race in MotoGP I had finish the race in eighth position, starting the race from not a very favorable position. There are only five races to the end of the season, I will give my best to be able to repay the support that the Team has always placed in me even in difficult moments. "

Honda riders head for home Grand Prix
The Japanese Grand Prix at Twin Ring Motegi, Honda?s home track, is always highly anticipated and never more so than this year. The race was originally the second on the calendar in late April, but was rescheduled when the Icelandic volcanic eruption disrupted air traffic in Europe.

Now, five months on, the race will take on a completely different feel. Instead of providing a preview of what was to come, the race will confirm what?s happening now, the 14th of 18 rounds, while also paying tribute to a member of the Honda family who lost his life in a racing accident.

Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) is on a roll coming into the team?s home grand prix, having won two of the past three races, a string of excellence that has cut 27% out of title leader Jorge Lorenzo?s earlier points lead. Pedrosa is on the best form of his life, with a career high of four race wins. Much of the credit has to go to the engineers at the Honda Racing Corporation, who have developed the RC212V into a machine that can win in any condition, on any track.

And that versatility will soon be put to the test. The season is entering its most intense stretch with five races in six weeks on three continents. It kicks off with the Motegi race, after which the traveling paddock will land in the tropical heat of Sepang, Malaysia, followed directly by the annual visit to the beautiful seaside Phillip Island circuit and its always unpredictable weather. The toll on riders and crews can be difficult, but the upside is that in the next three weeks there are 75 points to be had in three weeks, and for a title hunter like Pedrosa, who?s been on the podium here the past two years, this is an opportunity to make a serious thrust for the MotoGP crown which many had once believed out of reach. With nine podiums in the first 13 races, Pedrosa is looking good to eclipse his 2009 total of 11 podium finishes.

As much as Pedrosa and the rest of the Honda family look forward to Motegi, the race will also be a time for reflection as the MotoGP paddock and Honda Motor Company pay homage to one of their own. Popular Japanese rider Shoya Tomizawa, who began his full-time career lasts season riding a Honda RS250 for the Technomag-CIP team, lost his life in a racing accident at the recent San Marino Grand Prix. The young Japanese rising star, an infectiously effervescent 19-year-old from Chiba, had earlier won the first-ever Moto2 race at April?s Qatar GP. Tomizawa will be honoured in his home country by the racing community, as well as family and friends. Shoya?s family is to receive the Michel Metraux trophy from Metraux?s son, Olivier, at the Japanese race. The Michel Metraux trophy is given to the outstanding rider in the 125cc and Moto2 classes as voted by his peers.

Pedrosa?s team-mate Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) started the season with four podiums in the first five races. But maintaining that impressive run of performances has proven difficult, though he?s been on podium pace in at least two other races. Coming off a difficult race weekend at the inaugural Aragon Grand Prix, the Italian is hoping to get back on the rostrum at a track where he won a 125 GP and finished second on a 250. Dovizioso also ran a strong pace at last year?s Motegi GP, where he finished fifth, less than ten seconds behind the winner. Despite recent travails, a strong finish to the end of the year could land him third place in the championship.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V) is looking forward to the final five races to get back to his early season form. The Frenchman didn?t finish worse than ninth in the first seven races before breaking his leg at the German GP in mid-July. Since his miraculous recovery ? he only missed one race, the U.S.GP ? de Puniet hasn?t been the same. But, like all the Honda riders, he?s looking forward to a return to Honda?s home track, a track where he earned his first ever MotoGP podium.

San Carlo Honda Gresini team-mates Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli are tied on points with 74 each. Of the two, Simoncelli has the more recent success at Motegi. In 2008, the Italian won the 250cc race and was leading the last-ever 250cc race at the track last year when he was forced to retire. This will be his first visit on a MotoGP machine and he believes that mastering late race tyre management will help him improve his overall position.

Melandri is less concerned with managing his tyres that improving stability under braking. The Twin Ring Motegi has a number of stop-and-go corners and Melandri has had difficulty with that aspect of machine set-up this year. Still, he?s been on the podium in Motegi a number of times, including aboard a Honda RC211V in 2006.

Very few are looking forward to the Japanese Grand Prix as much as Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V). The last ever 250cc champion is a popular rider at home, where he?ll be making his MotoGP debut in front of friends and family. Aoyama has scored points in every MotoGP race he?s finished, though he missed six races mid-season after breaking his back during the British Grand Prix. Since his return, he has continued to progress physically and, with a two week break since the Aragon GP, expects to be approaching peak physical condition.

Twin Ring Motegi was built by Honda in the town of Motegi in the eastern Tochigi prefecture to celebrate the company?s 50th anniversary in 1998 and to help introduce open wheel Indy Car racing to Japan. The name comes from the marriage of two words, the English ?twin? and the German ?ring,? to denote two race tracks. The MotoGP race is run on the 4.8km road course, which hosts various events throughout the year. The other track is the 2.493k egg shaped-oval which last hosted Indy Cars in 2002. Motegi served as the site of the Pacific Grand Prix from 2000 to 2003 and since 2004 has been the venue for the Japanese GP.

The road course is built around stop-start straightaways leading to low-gear hairpins that favour stability on the brakes and rapid acceleration, usually on the fat part of the tyre. More than half of the 13 corners are taken in first or second gear. The lone sixth gear stretch is on the back straight, where in 2009 the fastest top speed of 297.8kp/h was clocked by Pedrosa and his RC212V. Pedrosa also had the fastest trap speed of 292kp/h in 2008.

Braking stability is paramount, as riders are asked to brake from sixth down to first gear for the 90 degree Turn 10 right-hander. From there the riders go briefly into the dark through the short tunnel under the oval straightaway. Out of the shadows they?re funneled into the final three-turn sequence that leads onto the 762m long front straight and the finish line.

Motegi was to have run on the April 25th weekend until the volcano in Iceland disrupted travel. The teams were told the weekend prior to the race that the date had been moved to the fall to become the first of the final three flyaways. After Malaysia and Phillip Island, the series reaches its finale back in Europe, at Estoril and Valencia.

HONDA MotoGP Rider Quotes

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa says:
?We start the most intense period of the season this weekend, with five races in six weeks, and my goal is to make the best possible finish to the championship. I think we?re very strong at the moment and we must take full advantage of it. This final stage begins in Japan ? the most important race for Honda because it?s their home Grand Prix ? and I?m looking forward to getting to the circuit and starting the preparations for this special race. I would love to win at Motegi because I?ve never won here in MotoGP and I?ve been on the podium for the last two seasons. I always feel very motivated in Japan. I love the circuit and the atmosphere you feel there. The fans are very enthusiastic but also educated, and I feel a lot of support. We couldn?t race in Motegi at the beginning of the season due to the problems with the volcanic ash clouds, so I think the fans will be even more excited to welcome us. It will be very important to start this tour of Asia in the best way. As I?ve said before, I will approach this final section of the season simply thinking race by race. We?re doing a good job in the team, the RC212V is working well ? we know it better and better ? and so this a good chance for us to try to win more races and to finish the year in the best possible way.?

Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso says:

?We have another chance to get a strong result this weekend and I?m very motivated going into this race. It is Honda?s home GP and it?s really important to do well here for Honda as well as for the team and myself. Last year, qualifying was cancelled because of rain and we didn?t have a lot of set-up time, but still I had a good race and my pace was strong, so I?m confident we can fight at the front again. Plus I always look forward to racing in Japan because the atmosphere is so different and special here. The layout of the Twin Ring Motegi, with its many areas of hard acceleration from low speed, is good for us and should allow us to use all the power and strong points of the RC212V. We are determined to get a good result here because we?ve been close for several races now without coming through on our potential. Our target remains third position in the championship, so a podium finish in Motegi is really important for me. It?s what we?re aiming for and I?m looking forward to the challenge at Honda?s home GP.?

LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet says:
?The last race in Aragon did not end as I expected. I had a good feeling on the bike on Friday and Saturday but I crashed with seven laps to go. I escaped unhurt from the accident but I was in a bad mood. I really hope to find my good pace again in the last part of the season starting from Japan. Motegi GP is very important for us as we race with Honda and the Japanese fans are very warm. I have good memories of this circuit because I obtained my first MotoGP podium there. I like the stop-and-go braking points and I always enjoy riding there!?

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri says:
?Following our disappointment at Aragon we go into the next run of races looking to give our best, even though we know it will be tough. Motegi is the first of three races in a row outside of Europe and it is a place where the weather is always uncertain so we just hope we get chance to do a good job in practice and prepare as well as possible for the race. Unfortunately I'm not feeling too optimistic about the trip; I like the track despite the fact it is not very technical but for me it is going to be a tough race because you need a bike that is stable under braking and that is where we are having the most problems at the moment. We believe in miracles!?

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli says:
?I was fairly happy after the race at Aragon although we needed to have a look at how and where I can improve my performance in the final stages of the race, when the tyres are worn. My rivals managed to keep up their pace in the same conditions but my speed dropped off noticeably and I couldn't stay with them. We have to improve the set up but we can use the one we found at Aragon as a base. Now we go to Motegi, a circuit I always quite liked on the 250. I won in Japan in 2008 and I was forced to retire from the race when I was leading last year but it is a circuit where I have always been fast and I hope that proves to be the case again in MotoGP. I'm feeling positive so let's see!?

Interwetten Honda MotoGP rider Hiroshi Aoyama says:
"I am looking forward to my home Grand Prix in Motegi. My family and my friends will be there to support me and I want to give them a good show to watch. I also hope that my back will be fit again and that I can give 100% without any concerns. I want to try to give the team the best possible result in Motegi and I hope it will be my best result this season so far. I expect a lot of this race and hope I can meet my target."

FREE PRACTICE REPORT 01/10/2010
Fiat Yamaha off to flying start at Motegi

The Fiat Yamaha Team made a flying start to the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi today in a close-fought practice session, with Valentino Rossi making a welcome return to the top of the time sheets and Jorge Lorenzo finishing the day in third.

Rossi was expecting this track to be particularly hard on his shoulder so he was delighted to find himself in less pain than last time out and feeling much stronger on the bike. The Italian used an upgraded engine specification for the first time today and his feedback was positive, finding particular improvements in the higher gears. He was fast from the very start of the session and then put in a blistering final lap to finish on top, two-tenths ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

Championship leader and last year's race winner Lorenzo also made a good start to the weekend, putting in a consistently fast performance despite not yet having the engine upgrade. Lorenzo has one less engine left from his allocation than Rossi at this stage of the season so he is likely to wait until later in the weekend to use the new one. He is hopeful that he and his crew can make some small improvements to their rear traction tomorrow but he is already in good shape and finished the day three-tenths off his team-mate. The Mallorcan's only championship rival, Dani Pedrosa, fell during the session and is expected to undergo surgery tomorrow to fix a broken collarbone.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 1st Time: 1'48.147 Laps: 27

"I'm really happy about today, it is honestly a big surprise for me to be first! I was expecting to suffer a lot here with my shoulder because there are so many hard braking areas but in fact they are all quite straight so I was happy to find I was okay. In fact I felt very good on the bike right from the start and we have done a great job here with the setting. I used the new engine and Yamaha have done an excellent job on it, it is especially better in fourth and fifth gears and everything is working very well. I know it's only Friday but it's a long time since I have been in front like this so I have to enjoy this sweet feeling! I know there's a chance of rain for the rest of the weekend, which is a pity, and if it is wet we will do our best. I am sorry for Dani; I saw the crash from far off and it's bad luck, I hope it is not too bad."

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 3rd Time: 1'48.474 Laps: 27
"We are much better here than in Aragon, which is a relief! I don't have the new engine yet like Valentino, I hope we can use it soon, but anyway here we lose much less in the straight here compared to at the last race and we have better acceleration. We can improve the traction a bit in some parts of the track but in general this was a good day and we are not so far off Valentino. I hope the rain stays away so we can continue to improve tomorrow. I don't want to think for now how Dani's situation will affect me, but I am sorry for him, it's very bad luck to be injured at this stage of the season."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager

"It's been a while since we finished a session in first! This was a really good practice for us because firstly it's nice to be in front but more importantly because Valentino was able to ride fast from the start. Our base setting worked very well here. We used the new upgraded engine for the first time and it is working well. We are in good shape and we hope to continue like this tomorrow."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager

"Firstly I want to say that we are really sorry for Dani and we wish him all the best. Today we tried two different settings and Jorge was able to ride fast with both, so tomorrow we will continue in the same way and try to find the best package. Valentino was using the new engine and it looks very good, so we are looking forward to being able to use it soon as well. Tomorrow we need to find a little bit more rear grip but all in all we have a good rhythm and the bike is feeling good for Jorge."
Spies and Edwards make fast start in Japan
Ben Spies and Colin Edwards made a confident start to the Japanese MotoGP weekend today, the American duo posting competitive lap times to finish inside the top seven at the end of first free practice. The Japanese MotoGP race was cancelled in April when an Icelandic volcano eruption caused global travel chaos. But when the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 finally took to the Twin Ring Motegi circuit this afternoon, Spies showed his debut performance at the track was well worth the wait.

Spies slipped seamlessly back into learner mode today, the 26-year-old quickly getting accustomed to the 4.801km circuit, which provides a tough examination of braking sta bility and acceleration with its stop-and-go nature.

A small mistake at turn three while evaluating Bridgestone's soft front tyre compound saw Spies suffer a slow speed tumble. The crash though failed to halt his rapid rise up the timesheets and a best lap of 1.49.302 put him an impressive fifth quickest.

Edwards was also delighted with his progress this afternoon, the 36-year-old finishing seventh fastest with a best time of 1.49.377. Edwards experimented with a new weight distribution set-up that helped corner exit acceleration and he is confident he can fight for a first top six finish of the campaign in Sunday's 24-lap race.

Today's session was run in warm but windy conditions with air temperatures peaking at 26 degrees. Conditions were in stark contrast to the gloomy skies that produced torrential rain for much of yesterday. Sunday's race is the first of a grue lling flyaway triple header with the Sepang race in Malaysia and Phillip Island clash in Australia following in quick succession.
Ben Spies - Position: 5th Time: 1'49.302 Laps: 27 laps
"Being in the top five having never seen this track before is a really good start. This track isn't super technical and it doesn't really help us much with all the stop and go sections that hurt us a little bit on speed. It was a little tricky learning the track because the conditions don't seem to be what everybody is used to. So it was even trickier for me trying to build up trust in some corners. I used the soft front tyre at the start of the session and I wasn't too keen on it. I came in for the hard tyre but the team wanted me to do one more stint on the soft and on the second lap of that run I got in deep at turn three. I had to let off the brake to gather it back up but I was trying to keep the bike on the t rack because I didn't want to get into the gravel with all the rain we'd had yesterday. As soon as I got to the edge of the track I lost the front. I was only going really slow, probably like 10ks, but I landed really hard on my left elbow on the kerb. It's not too painful and shouldn't be a problem for me on the bike. It kind of proved that I didn't like the soft front tyre but the hard one felt good on the spare bike and the rest of the session went pretty smooth."

Colin Edwards - Position: 7th Time: 1.49.377 Laps: 24 laps
"It was a decent start and I'm reasonably happy because we tried a new setting today to try and help with a wheelie issue that we've always seemed to struggle with at this track. You've got all this hard acceleration out of low gear corners and we've always found it difficult to control wheelies here. I remember last year it felt like the whole weekend was wheelie manage ment, so we put a lot of weight on the front-end today and it felt good. We were actually moving forward out of the corner under acceleration, so we might have found something that can help us at a few other tracks. Without having to concentrate so much on stopping the wheelie problem, I can focus on accelerating a bit harder and that is helping us a lot. I was really close to sixth and not far behind Ben, so hopefully this is the start of a good weekend for me.

Encouraging first day at Suzuki?s home Grand Prix

Rizla Suzuki had a positive first day?s practice in Motegi with both riders in touching distance of a top-five position.

Loris Capirossi (P9, 1?49.568, 23 laps) made a strong return from his recent injury as he was consistently inside the top-10 throughout the hour-long session. Although he had some discomfort from the wound that was the result of extensive surgery to save his little finger, Capirossi was pleased with his first day?s work and is sure that as he gets stronger and improves the bike to compensate for the injury, his times and position will also improve.

?lvaro Bautista (P12, 1?49.644, 24 laps) also had a good first day, finishing only 0.342 seconds off fifth place ? despite not being able to find the grip he was looking for around the 4,801m Japanese circuit. The Spaniard was in a very confident mood and is looking to impress over the weekend at Suzuki?s home Grand Prix.

Today?s practice session was held in warm and sunny conditions with track temperatures reaching 41?C. The fastest time of the day was set by reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi on his Factory Yamaha.

Rizla Suzuki has one more practice session tomorrow morning, before an hour of qualifying in the afternoon will decide grid positions for Sunday?s 24-lap race.

Loris Capirossi:

?Overall I am happy with my condition today, I didn?t quite ride like I wanted to - or know that I can ? but I found a good feeling with the bike and the team took a big step in the session to help me. To run in the top-10 in the first practice ? and be only a couple of tenths off the top-five - is really good for me. We have to keep improving and with my condition ? which I felt today was not 100% - we have to keep working hard to make the bike better for me to ride.?

?lvaro Bautista:

?It has been quite a good first practice compared with some of the other races. I started with the harder compound tyres, but I didn?t feel much rear grip exiting the corners so I changed to the softer version and that was better. I also tried the soft front later in the session, because under hard braking conditions it was difficult to turn the bike with the harder compound, but this didn?t seem to make much difference so we switched back to the previous one. I do still have a bit of a problem with the exit from the corner because I don?t really have good grip and we must work to improve this as quickly as possible. Tomorrow we have a lot to do, but I am happy with today because I am not that far from fifth position and this means that we are going in the right direction. I want to have a good weekend here in Suzuki?s homeland and my team and I will try as hard as we can to get a good result.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?After yesterday?s deluge everybody was happy to see the sun shining and to be able to get some work done. Following extensive surgery to save his little finger, Loris is obviously riding in some pain, but the base level of the GSV-R and his fitness has been enough for quite a competitive showing ? especially when we consider that Loris did the whole session on the same set of tyres. ?lvaro has also shown strong and consistent pace in this first session and whilst he is looking for improved rear grip ? and additional steps in performance ? the base for the weekend seems quite solid. Suzuki has brought some updates here to Motegi and they look like they?ll help us come race day. The whole team would like to thank the factory engineers for their continued efforts to improve the performance level of the GSV-R."

THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM RIDERS APPEAR ON THE FOURTEEHTH AND FIFTEEHNTH POSITION AFTER THE FIRST FREE PRACTISE OF JAPAN GRAND PRIX.
Difficult start for the Pramac Racing Team riders on Motegi's track in first free practice of the Japanese Grand Prix. Aleix Espargar? stops the clock with almost two seconds of gap from the fastest lap time clocked by Valentino Rossi. Same goes for Mika Kallio who had a gap of almost three seconds. Both riders have scored their best lap time during their last lap. During the first free practice sessions there have been some changes on the bikes of both riders to allow them to be more stable in curve entrance. Aleix's second sector time was very good, the Spaniard was in fact the ninth fastest rider, a fact on which the technicians will be able to work this afternoon to try to close the gap accused by other riders also in the other sectors. The hope now is that the changes made today will allow both to mark an important lap time during the second free practice session tomorrow, so that they can fight with other riders for a good starting grid position on the twelfth MotoGP Grand Prix on this track.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Technical Director

"During today's free practice we worked on both bikes to try some settings that we will use tomorrow during qualifying session. We worked on the tyres trying both compounds. In particular, we noticed that the first setting we have try on Mika's bike was not ideal because it didn't allowed him to enter with the right speed through the corners, once pitted in we had try a different suspension set up, the work undertaken had a good response but not as we expected. We then made a further modify which allowed Mika to turn on a low 1'.51. The good response we had with the last setting on both bikes bodes us well for tomorrow's second free practice, where we will try to reduce the gap we had from the first rider and find the right setting that will allows us to compete for a good position on the starting grid. "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 15th best time in 1'50 .158

"I'm partially happy with how things went today, I had some problems with my forearm that did not allow me to push hard as I wanted. Certainly the result and the two seconds of gap from the first is not exciting, but we've got to work a lot and find the right setup that will allow us to gain a good starting grid position tomorrow for the Sunday's Grand Prix. I have never race on this circuit with a MotoGP bike, and for this reason that during tomorrow second free practice session I'll continue to improve my feeling with this track. In particular I have to work more in the third and last sector where I accuse the greatest gap from other riders. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 16th best time in 1'51 .105

"I hadn't got big problems with my bike even though it was slightly unstable in the curve in some sectors. Thanks to the latest setup made by my technicians, I was able to score my best lap time. Also during the last exit from the pits I had find some instructions to give to my technical to made them work on my bike so that they will made it perfectly balanced. Tomorrow we will start from here to reduce the gap that separates me from the best riders. "

Dovizioso second at Motegi, Pedrosa falls and breaks collarbone

Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso finished in second place in the first free practice session for this weekend?s Grand Prix of Japan. The 24-year-old Italian was quickly into his stride at the Twin Ring Motegi and rapidly established a promising machine set-up for his Honda RC212V. Steadily improving his pace throughout the hour, Dovizioso was in first position in the closing minutes until Valentino Rossi pipped him for top spot with his final lap. Dovizioso is confident of further improvements in tomorrow?s practice and qualifying session, should the dry weather hold at Motegi.

For Dovizioso?s team-mate, it was a much less happy day, Pedrosa falling early in the session and suffering a double fracture of the left collarbone which means the Spaniard is unfortunately out of the Grand Prix of Japan. The crash happened only five minutes into the session when the 25-year-old was still getting up to speed. As he began braking for turn nine, he lost control and fell, with his left leg at first remaining under the bike as he slid into the gravel. The unlucky fall, just three laps into the session, was caused when a small problem with the throttle cable didn?t allow Pedrosa to close the throttle when he came to brake, an issue which has already been investigated and resolved. Pedrosa will return home to Spain tonight, with an operation scheduled for tomorrow to plate the fractured collarbone.

Dovizioso will be back on track tomorrow morning for practice, with qualifying taking place at 13.55.

ANDREA DOVIZIOSO ? 2nd ? 1m 48.387s +0.213s

?I?m happy with today?s session and especially with the lap time - today we started from a good base. In fact I think that we have a margin to improve further so I?m confident for the rest of the weekend. This is a track with particular characteristics; it has sections of strong acceleration and also parts where you brake aggressively, that?s why it?s important to find a good compromise to control the bike wheeling and get the best acceleration. I?m also very confident that we can improve because today we used the same tyres throughout the session and I didn?t test the front hard tyre that seems to give an advantage. I?m really sorry for Dani. It?s always very bad for a rider when there are injuries. I was behind him and it was a bad crash. He fell quite hard and stayed under the bike when he slid. I hope he can recover soon.?

DANI PEDROSA

?Obviously this has been a really bad day for us. It was a strange crash in only my second full lap, in a slow section of the track. I tried to stop the bike as usual but I knew something was wrong and couldn?t avoid going down. After the crash I knew immediately that I was injured because it was very painful. I had a big impact in my left ankle and also my collarbone was broken as I hit the track - so obviously it feels very unlucky because recently we have had really good results. I?ve been very healthy through the pre-season and through the year and we had been working a lot to get to and stay at the maximum level. Another injury to contend with is really not what I needed - I don?t feel as though I deserve it. Anyway, once the doctors had checked everything here, we decided it was best to go back to Spain for the operation. I hope it goes as well as possible and that I can return to racing soon.?

TOSHIYUKI YAMAJI - REPSOL HONDA TEAM MANAGER

?Andrea did a good job today and he has the potential to improve his pace still further. He and his team worked will today and he?s looking on course for a strong race. For Dani it?s obviously very disappointing that he has suffered this injury. At any time this wouldn?t be good, but Dani was in excellent form and so the timing - at the start of three races in close succession - is very unfortunate. We have looked closely into the reasons for the crash and hope that Dani can return to fitness and to racing quickly.?

INTERWETTEN HONDA MotoGP TEAM ? Aoyama disappointed with starting position for home race
The Qualifying for the Home Grand Prix of Hiroshi Aoyama at the Twin Ring Motegi unfortunately went completely in the different direction than expected and the 28 year old and the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team are disappointed with the starting position for tomorrow?s race. The concentration now is on Aoyama?s feeling with the bike as it was much better in yesterday?s practice when he finished sixth. The Qualifying he finished on 14th position. For tomorrow Aoyama?s target is to achieve the best result of the season so far for himself and his team.

Hiroshi Aoyama, 14 ? 1?48.396:
?We lost some positions and I am not happy about that. Nevertheless we could improve our lap time in the afternoon and that is something positive. As you know the qualifying is different to the race and the race still can be a good one, but I am definitely not happy with the result of the qualifying.?

Tom Jojic, Crew Chief:

?Today was an interesting day. We worked a lot with the set up and tried to improve the chassis. We found a good direction with this. The problem with braking Hiro has since he came back in Brno still exists and this is also the biggest problem we have to solve. We have to concentrate to solve this problem.?

Daniel M. Epp, Team Manager:

?The starting position is not what we expected today. We were looking for much more here. Unfortunately Hiro was going wide in the gravel seven minutes before the finish of the qualifying and lost some time. And his last fast lap was 2 seconds to late; otherwise he could have qualified in the Top 10. For tomorrow Hiro needs a very good start and he has to ride on full attack.?

Third row start for Bautista at Motegi

Rizla Suzuki?s ?lvaro Bautista will start from the third row of the grid for tomorrow?s Japanese Grand Prix after equalling his season?s best qualifying position today.

Bautista (P9, 1?48.002, 28 laps) made steady and solid progression throughout both this morning?s final practice session and this afternoon?s qualifying. He improved his time, the Suzuki GSV-R and his riding style to get the best out of his machine and himself around the 4?801m Motegi circuit. Bautista?s ninth place equals his best qualifying position so far this season, he started from the same place on the grid in Catalunya and went on to secure fifth place in that race.

Loris Capirossi (P10, 1?48.068, 22 laps) signalled his intentions at the start of the qualifying practice this afternoon by posting consecutive fastest times during the early part of the hour to head the leader-board. Unfortunately Capirossi crashed soon afterwards and had to make his way back to the pit-box to mount his other bike and continue with the session. He continued to battle on and improve on his times to leave him heading the fourth row for tomorrow?s race.

Today?s qualifying produced an exciting session with seven riders swapping places for the top place during the hour ? including both Rizla Suzuki riders ? before Andrea Dovizioso on his Factory Honda secured his first pole position of the season, with reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi in second.

Tomorrow?s race is round 14 of the season and the 24-lap main event will get underway at 15.00hrs local time (06.00GMT), with both Suzuki racers aiming to put on a good show in front of some distinguished guests from the factory and the many Suzuki fans at the Japanese marque?s home Grand Prix.

?lvaro Bautista:

?The qualifying was not too bad; because we needed to do a good time to get the best position to make a good start on Sunday and we achieved that ? although we would have liked to be a bit further up the grid. Today we started qualifying with a used tyre from this morning?s session and I did a constant rhythm and the feeling was good. We made a small change which didn?t work so we went back to this morning?s set up and straight away it felt better. I tried to find someone to follow, but it felt like I was alone on the track, so I concentrated on my own riding to make sure I did my best. The position is ok, but I think we can run further towards the front. The weather tomorrow could be wet so it will be important to get a good start and stay with the front group. I feel positive for tomorrow, even if it rains, because we have a good bike for the wet. I will give it full gas and push to the maximum to get a good result for Suzuki in its home Grand Prix.?

Loris Capirossi:

?I am a little bit upset by my mistake, because I started with the harder tyre and the rhythm was so good and I felt really confident on the bike. I fell off on turn one, there is one big bump there and I hit that and lost the front. I also lost a bit of confidence after that when I jumped on the other bike, I tried to keep my rhythm, but I just didn?t have the same feeling with that machine. I struggled with a bit of feeling at the front and I didn?t feel I could push as much as I wanted because I didn?t want to risk crashing again. The potential for us is good here and the bike is working well ? I am very optimistic for the race and I think we can get a very positive result.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?The guys were fifth and seventh in free practice this morning and we believe ? and hope ? that that is more of an indicator of their race pace. Loris?s crash definitely upset his rhythm, in addition to giving him a bit more pain to deal with, and that didn?t help when it came to taking the next leap-of-faith to get further up the grid. ?lvaro?s laps were like clockwork and if he can get off the third row as well as he did in Catalunya, it could be a very interesting race for him tomorrow. We?re looking forward to the Grand Prix; it?s going to be a very tight race.?

ROSSI RETURNS TO FRONT ROW AS LORENZO JUST MISSES OUT IN JAPAN

Valentino Rossi made a happy return to the front row for the first time since his mid-season injury today, with a brilliant display in an entertaining Motegi qualifying session. His Fiat Yamaha team-mate and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was equally consistent but just missed out on the front row, the first time this season that he has qualified outside the top three.

Reigning World Champion Rossi has been in much better shape this weekend and was feeling confident after topping the time sheets yesterday afternoon. He was third this morning and determined to get back on the front row this afternoon, making the most of his upgraded M1 engine and remaining inside the top four for the entire session. As he headed out for his final run he was sitting in fourth but an excellent final lap lifted him up two places and he finished the session just 0.054 seconds off maiden pole-sitter Andrea Dovizioso.

Lorenzo had his first chance to use the new engine this afternoon and the 23-year-old seemed to be feeling its effects immediately, as he was a few tenths ahead of his rivals in the early stages. Quick laps from Dovizioso and Casey Stoner later on relegated him to third however and, despite improving his time on several occasions towards the end he was unable to catch them and was bumped to fourth when Rossi put in his quick lap. Lorenzo, who signed a new two-year contract with Yamaha this weekend, will start from the head of the second row when the race gets underway at 1500 Japanese time tomorrow.

Valentino Rossi Position: 2nd Time: 1'47.055 Laps: 27

"It is a good feeling to be back on the front row after so long, the last time was at Le Mans, before the Mugello crash! We have improved in every area here, firstly we have made a big step with our setting, then we have the new engine from Yamaha which is enabling us to push more and be faster on the straights, plus we also have slightly harder Bridgestone tyres here than in Aragon and they are working better for me. As I said yesterday I expected to suffer more with the shoulder but I am feeling quite good and when I brake in a straight line here I don't have too much pain. I am so happy about all of this. This front row is going to be very important for tomorrow, we really hope for good weather and let's see what we can do."

Jorge Lorenzo Position: 4th Time: 1'47.206 Laps: 27

"I am a little disappointed because this wasn't the result we were expecting. I would have really liked to be on the front row here in Japan, Yamaha's home, after signing with them for two more years this morning. However it's only qualifying and the most important thing is that we're ready for the race, we have a good pace and we only have one or two more small things still to work on. This afternoon I tried the new engine for the first time and it felt good in the high gears. This is the first time for me this season on the second row, but I am still close to the front and I will try to make the best start I can. The forecast for tomorrow isn't the best so we have to be prepared for rain...let's hope not though!"

Davide Brivio Team Manager

"It's really nice to be back on the first row. We've had two good days and three strong sessions so we are feeling happy in our team. Valentino was very close to pole position and things are looking good for us to be in with a chance tomorrow. The weather is a question mark, some rain is expected and we will have to wait and see what the temperature is like before making a final tyre decision, but we're excited about the race."

Wilco Zeelenberg Team Manager

"Despite missing out on the front row for the first time this was a good session for us. Jorge's race pace is very strong, we just weren't able to put everything together to make one perfect lap. However we are only in fourth and his rhythm is very consistent and fast so it's not a drama for us. He used the new engine for the first time and it's feeling good for him, he had to make a few small adjustments but it's definitely an improvement."

QUALIFICATIONS COMPLETED IN MOTEGI: FIFTH ROW FOR ESPARGARO', SIXTH ROW FOR KALLIO
Under tone qualifying session for the Pramac Racing Team riders. Aleix Espargar?, after obtaining the eleventh place during this morning second free practice thanks also to a considerable improvement compared to yesterday's free practise, fails to go over the thirteenth starting grid position of the Japanese Grand Prix. He will start the race from the fifth row. His team-mate Mika Kallio, was unable to find a good feeling with the Japanese track and had finished the qualifying session in the last position of the starting grid, also if he had last year managed to conquer the eighth position during the race. Tomorrow, the white and green duo will have to find good techniques solutions during the warm-up in order to try to overtake position during the race that will start at 3 pm local time.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Technical Director

"Instead of Aragon's track, where all the Ducati where very fast, on this track only Stoner was able to rest among the best riders. Usually Ducati are most efficient when they use hard tyres in contrast to other teams have a better performance with soft tyres. On Motegi track it was not like this because the others riders were significantly faster with soft tyres. This should not be an excuse for us but a good motivation to find suitable solutions for tomorrow. "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 13th fastest time in 1'48 .371

"We tried it. This morning the situation was acceptable, but this afternoon when the session was really important, we cannot improve the lap time as we expected. It's a pity. I prefer tracks with fast corners and not with hard braking and acceleration, as here, but I still hope to be able to get a good start tomorrow and try to stay with the fastest riders and win as many points as possible for the riders and Teams standings. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 16th fastest time in 1'49 .480

"Just cannot find the feeling with the bike. I cannot get the right confidence to push hard, as I always do. Being in the last position with a gap of nearly a second from the rider ahead of me is really frustrating. I'm sorry also for the guys of my Team who work with so much passion and dedication. I do not think to be a last position rider and tomorrow I will try to prove it for all my technical staff. "

Edwards and Spies confident of strong home race for Yamaha

Colin Edwards equalled his best qualifying performance of the 2010 MotoGP world championship today, the American securing a thoroughly deserved fifth place on the grid for Yamaha's all-important home race at the Twin Ring Motegi track in Japan.

And completing an excellent afternoon for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team, Ben Spies was just one place further back in sixth position, the 26-year-old clinching a place on the second row for the sixth successive race.

Experienced Edwards had a productive session as he continued to fine-tune a new weight distribution setting he first evaluated in yesterday's opening practice.

The modifications clearly boosted the 36-year-old's confidence with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 machine when he elevated himself into second place on the timesheets just before the halfway stage.

It looked like his determined efforts would go unrewarded as he slipped out of the top six in the closing stages, only to deliver a stunning last lap of 1.47.464 to finish just over 0.4s away from pole position.

Today's performance has given Edwards huge encouragement that he can claim his first top six finish of the season in tomorrow's 24-lap race.

Spies was thrilled with his sixth position, a quickest time of 1.47.648 leaving him just 0.184s adrift of Edwards despite his lack of experience at the 4.801km Japanese venue. Spies steadily improved his pace throughout the session despite a small electronics issue preventing him from riding to his full potential.

Edwards and Spies helped Yamaha occupy four places in the top six today and both are confident they can play a pivotal role in tomorrow's home race for the Japanese factory. The race though may provide a completely different proposition with weather forecasts showing rain is expected tomorrow.

Colin Edwards 5th 1.47.464 ? 26 laps

?I'm really happy to be on the second row and in fifth position. That is my best qualifying result since Mugello, but I'll admit after this morning's session I was not expecting to be so high up and as fast as I was. Yesterday when I ran the soft tyre I didn't feel like I had enough grip so I hadn't used it all today. I was a bit worried for qualifying that I'd find it hard but we'd played around with the weight distribution on the front again and when I put the soft tyre in this afternoon it felt like a different motorcycle. It did everything I asked it to do and I had a lot more confidence going into the corner. The lap time wasn't easy but it was a lot easier than I'd expected. I think this is probably the happiest I've felt with the bike all year. I've been able to ride the bike to its full potential and I'm confident I can get that first top six finish of the season tomorrow. It is going to be a hard fight but I'm ready for it and I'm determined to get a good result for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team and Yamaha. This is a massive race for Yamaha and hopefully Ben and I can put on a good show with Valentino and Jorge.?

Ben Spies 6th 1.47.648 ? 27 laps

?I am actually really happy to be on the second row again because at the start of the session I was fighting a lot of stuff with the electronics. The chassis set-up is not so bad but some issues with the electronics made the bike really hard to ride. If we can figure out the electronics the bike will be a lot easier to ride, so having the feelings I'm having with the bike, I'm super happy to be in the top six. Considering the way the bike was working, to be just over half-a-second off pole position is a big surprise because I didn't expect to be so close. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team is working really hard to fix the problems but it hasn't made the task of learning the track any easier. I have to deal with it and I'm still confident that we can be much stronger in the race. Sometimes you have a day when things don't quite work out and it's nobody's fault. I can't complain because when I look at the guys behind me, they have been around this track a million times. That gives me a lot of encouragement for tomorrow but we'll have to see what the weather throws at us."

Dovizioso takes his first MotoGP pole position at Motegi
Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) stepped in to fill the void left by injured team-mate Dani Pedrosa to take his first-ever MotoGP pole position on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the the Twin Ring Motegi circuit, Honda?s home track north of Tokyo. Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) was second and Casey Stoner (Ducati) third.

Pedrosa was forced to abandon his championship hopes when he fractured his left collarbone in a Friday afternoon practice crash. The only rider able to challenge Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) for the title flew back to Spain, where he was expected to have surgery to plate the damaged collarbone. A date for his return to racing has not been set.

In his absence, Dovizioso stepped up, the Italian picking the perfect time to perform above even his own expectations and achieve pole position. The front row start was only his second, to go with a third place qualifying effort in this year?s United States Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

Dovizioso lapped the 4.8km track 60 miles north of Tokyo with a time of 1m 47.001s. Dovizioso had posted his fast lap with nearly six minutes remaining in the one hour qualifying session, which made him vulnerable to attack. But the mark was out of reach of the rest of the 16-rider MotoGP field and Dovi had reason to celebrate.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V) had put his name at the top of the order earlier and hoped to be on the front row. He was on a flyer late in the session when he ran wide and into the turn one gravel trap. The Frenchman stayed upright, but any hope of a front row start was gone. Instead he?ll start from seventh on row three and just in front of Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V). De Puniet said he was finally back on form after breaking his leg at the German Grand Prix in July and he chose to use race tyres to find a good race setting, rather than one outright fast lap on a soft tire.

Simoncelli wasn?t happy to see the chequered flag. On his first visit to Motegi on a MotoGP machine, he found speed throughout the hour, turning in his best performance with his last lap. The team needed more time to work on a race setting, as the Italian said he was losing time in the final section, which includes the circuit?s longest straightaway.

Team-mate Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) found the qualifying session difficult with a recurrence of many of the same problems he?s had all season, on top of which he was suffering from a fever. The weather forecast for Sunday was mixed, and Melandri was one of the few riders hoping for inclement weather, which he felt would be an equalizer.

Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) was disappointed to qualify 14th in his first home grand prix in the MotoGP class. Aoyama had been an encouraging sixth in Friday practice, but that form didn?t follow him into qualifying. He did improve on his Saturday morning time, which would be more indicative of his race pace, rather than the time he spent on the softer rear tyres.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda RC212V: 1st ? 1m, 47.001s

?I?m really happy to be on pole position and also surprised because I didn?t expect to get so close to going under a 1m 47s lap here. This is like my second home race because it?s the home of the team, which makes it even more special to get my first pole position here. I?m also so happy about the performance of the RC212V. We?ve got the electronics working really well here - the anti-wheelie system in particular - and also the power is very strong which helps a lot. We?re looking good for the race because my style is usually not to go at my absolute maximum pace in practice and qualifying, so I?m hopeful for tomorrow. I?d like to say thanks a lot to the team because they are working really well for me. It?s the race tomorrow that really counts though, so we?ll be concentrating hard to make sure we have a strong race.?

Randy de Puniet, LCR Honda RC212V: 7th ? 1m, 47.752s
?It seems we found the right adjustments and I could finally ride as I did in the first part of the season before the bad injury. The team made the right changes working on chassis set-up especially on hard braking and we have solved the rear grip issues so my race pace is pretty good at the moment. Probably I could be faster than this on qualifiers, but 7th spot on the grid is positive and in my opinion it?s more important to be consistent on race trim. We still have to choose the rear tyre for tomorrow?s race but I am pleased with the bike overall set-up. The weather is the only uncertainty, but I am always quick in the wet.?

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V: 8th ? 1m, 47.914s
?I managed to do a quick lap at the end. It was a shame the flag came out because I could have taken another couple of tenths off and moved up to the second row, but in any case we're in good shape for tomorrow's race and all we have left to decide is the tyre choice. To be honest we still have to work out why I am losing so much time in the final section ? maybe we need to look at the electronics and see if we can get a little extra acceleration out of the corner and I also need to check my approach to the three corners in that section.?

Marco Melandri, San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V: 12th ? 1m, 48.238s
?Another difficult session with the same problems as the whole season. We haven't found a solution and we need help from Honda if we are going to get over this. I also had a little bit of a fever this morning but thankfully the doctors at the Clinica Mobile made sure I was fit to take part in qualifying. My big hope for tomorrow is that we get some bad weather, which should shuffle the pack.?

Hiroshi Aoyama, Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V: 14th ? 1m, 48.396s
?We lost some positions and I am not happy about that. Nevertheless we could improve our lap time in the afternoon and that is something positive. As you know the qualifying is different to the race and the race still can be a good one, but I am definitely not happy with the result of the qualifying.?

Pedrosa undergoes successful surgery

Dani Pedrosa underwent surgery today to fix a titanium plate to the fractured left collarbone he suffered in a fall yesterday during free practice for the Grand Prix of Japan. The two-hour operation at the Dexeus University Institute Hospital in Barcelona was a success and Pedrosa is now recuperating. The surgeon in charge, Dr. Xavier Mir, said afterwards that the procedure went very well but that it is still too early to predict possible timescales for Pedrosa?s recovery.

After his crash yesterday, Pedrosa flew in the evening from Japan to his home city of Barcelona, arriving this morning in understandable discomfort following the 18-hour journey via Paris. During an examination prior to the operation it was also confirmed that Pedrosa had done nothing more than sprain his left ankle when his leg was momentarily trapped under the machine during the fall yesterday. The Repsol Honda Team rider is expected to remain in hospital for between 24 and 48 hours.

Dr. Xavier Mir

?The operation went very well. Dani had a four fragment chip fracture of the left collarbone and, together with Doctors Marlet and Ginebreda, we have performed a fixation with a titanium plate, made especially for the collarbone. We have fixed the two intermediate fragments with two compression screws. Regarding the left ankle, while in surgery, we performed another stress x-ray and saw that we were dealing with a grade 1 ankle sprain, which will heal in a short space of time. The rider is recently out of surgery and I think we must wait at least 48 hours, after which time, if all goes well, we may begin rehabilitation. At this time, it is not possible to give precise dates for recovery.?

Bautista fights back to seventh at Motegi as luckless Capirossi retires

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP racers ?lvaro Bautista and Loris Capirossi had very different ends to today?s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi as one took a fine seventh position, while the other was forced to retire.

Bautista was boxed in on the first corner and relegated to 12th place at the end of the first lap, from ninth on the grid. He then set about making his way through the field and just after half distance he had caught and passed Marco Melandri for eighth. The next rider in Bautista?s sight was team-mate Capirossi and as he chased him down for what was looking to be an exciting inter-team battle in the closing stages, Capirossi visibly slowed and went into the gravel on lap 22. As Bautista benefitted from Capirossi?s sad demise and moved into seventh, he tried to make up the distance to the top six, and although he ended the race with top-five position lap-times, he was just unable to close down on Marco Simoncelli with the few laps that were remaining.

Capirossi had had an impressive race and was still in with a strong chance of a top-five position, until his enforced retirement. He made an impressive start and settled into a good rhythm in seventh place, fighting with Colin Edwards and Simoncelli for fifth. Capirossi looked in with a good chance of attacking the pair in the last few laps, but an electrical issue caused him to lose power and slow dramatically, before his bike finally stopped altogether due to a fail-safe measure as he went into a corner, causing him to run into the gravel. Capirossi was unable to re-start his machine and forced to retire. He was very disappointed to leave Motegi empty-handed after what had been a very positive weekend for him.

Today?s race was held in warm, but overcast conditions and was watched at trackside by just over 40,000 very colourful and exuberant fans. Ducati?s Casey Stoner took his second win in succession, with World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo in fourth.

Rizla Suzuki now travels immediately to Malaysia for the next round of the season, which will be held next Sunday at the Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur.

?lvaro Bautista:

?It was not a good, but also not a bad result! We improved on our position from the last few races, but I had a problem in the first few laps with the rear tyre because it was just not getting enough temperature in it, this made it difficult to follow the others riders. After three or four laps I got back into my rhythm and saw that I could keep a similar distance and time to the front group, but the gap was too big and I wasn?t able to catch them. I am happy with the result and the whole team has worked very hard all weekend, but we need to improve on what happened in the first few laps, because in this category those laps are very important. I hope that in Malaysia we can make steps with this and we?ll try to be in the position that I think we should be - which at the moment is in the top-six.?

Loris Capirossi:

?Overall the weekend has been quite positive and we have been in a good position all the time ? apart from right at the end of today! I started well and got into a good rhythm behind Marco and Colin, at some points on the track I would lose time on them, but in other places I would make a lot of time on them. Then five or six laps from the end the bike started to slow down a bit. I don?t know what happened, but then it started to go ok again and then with a couple of laps to go it completely stopped. I am very sorry for the whole team, but it seems the luck is just not with me this season ? we will still try to finish the season in the best way that we can.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?The whole team is very disappointed for Loris. He rode with a lot of pain all weekend, he showed a consistently good pace and without the failure then sixth position was very possible. He can take some positives from this weekend, the bike package worked well and he loves Sepang, so hopefully next weekend he can go for his best result of the season.

?It was nice to see ?lvaro go one better than the last three Grands Prix, again it involved a big fight after being a long way back after the first couple of laps and we could make his life a lot easier with better initial performance from the GSV-R in the early stages. He?s been riding well and consistently, his level is increasing step-by-step and we?re excited about his potential for the remainder of the season.?

RACE TO FORGET FOR THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM RIDERS ON MOTEGI CIRCUIT: ESPARGARO' FOURTEENTH, KALLIO FIFTEENTH.
After the yesterday's difficult qualifying session that have seen both Pramac Racing Team riders starting the race in the rear starting grid positions, Aleix Espargar? have finished the race in fourteenth place while Mika Kallio had to settle for the fifteenth and final position. A negative result for the Team that aimed to achieve a good result on this track. Both riders where having a very good start but despite this, Mika has never been able to lower his lap pace positioning himself in last position. Aleix who had initially struggled with Aoyama and Barber? trying to gain a better position, he have been overtaken on the thirteenth lap by Spies and then with three laps to go by Hayden, the Ducati rider overtake has bound the Spaniard in the penultimate position. A race that has to be quickly forget so that the Team can immediately return to work in order to increase its riders performance since the next Malaysian Grand Prix which will be held next Sunday on Sepang's track.

Fabiano Sterlacchini - Technical Director

"During this morning warm-up we had further reduced the gap we had accused yesterday from the best riders. This has gave us good feelings for the today's race, but unfortunately Mika and Aleix have not had a good lap pace that allowed them to recover positions. Too bad because we had aimed to achieve a good result on this track. It will be very important for us now to continue to work hard since next Friday on Sepang's track, where we can take advantage by using the technical data that we were able to accumulate during the winter tests "

Aleix Espargar? - Pramac Racing Team - 14th in the race - 14th in the World Championship

"I'm really disappointed with how things went. It was absolutely the worst weekend of the year, since the first free practice I had handling problems with my bike and unlike other races where I had the possibility to change my pace during the race, in this case I have not been able to fight with my opponents for a better position. I started quite well, maintaining my position, I unfortunately found in front of me some riders who were very slow in the first few laps, this has effectively divided the group into two with a gap of several seconds in the first few laps. I struggled with Aoyama and Barber? to try to gain a better position. Their lap pace, however, was much faster than mine, because I've never been able to run under a 1'.49". Over the last few laps I was also overtaken by Hayden. This result will help us to react in the best way and try to our best next week in the Malaysian Grand Prix. "

Mika Kallio - Pramac Racing Team - 15th in the race - 17th in the World Championship

"This was a weekend and a race to quickly forget, one of the worst races ever. During the warm up we had partially reduced the gap from the other riders, this has gave us a good feeling for the race, but unfortunately it was not like this. Only in one occasion I was able to turn with a lap time less than 1 '.50. That is not a good thing if your direct rivals are turning two seconds faster than you. We will work hard to close the gap that we have accused today so that we can be as much as possible more close to other riders in the next Grand Prix. "

Rossi back on podium as Fiat Yamaha fight it out at Motegi

Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo put on a brilliant show for the Japanese fans at Motegi today, fighting it out for the final podium position in a battle that went down to the wire. Rossi just prevailed over his team-mate to take third, his sixth podium of the season, while Lorenzo's fourth place sets up his first Championship match-point at Sepang next weekend.

The excitement between the pair started at turn one, when Lorenzo pulled an audacious move on Rossi, passing him around the outside and exiting the second corner in third place, with the Italian in fourth. As the eventual-winner and runner-up Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso moved clear in front, Rossi was determined not to let his team-mate escape and stuck close behind, looking for every occasion to pass him. He tried a few times before he was able to make it stick and the reigning World Champion eventually passed the current championship-leader on the sixth lap of 24, going on to set the fastest lap of the race on the next lap.

Rossi and Lorenzo then settled into a rhythm with a gap of a few tenths between them, although they were unable to make much headway on the leaders, who were nearly two seconds ahead of them by that point. As the race sped towards its climax Rossi's tyres began to slide a little and Lorenzo took the fight to him, making his first move on lap 18 but unable to stay in front. On the penultimate lap an incredible passing sequence led to the pair touching fairings on more than one occasion and the excitement did not end there, as they swapped positions several more times before Rossi just gained the advantage in the final few corners and crossed the line half a second in front.

Lorenzo is now 69 points ahead of the injured Dani Pedrosa and needs to be at least 75 ahead of his fellow Spaniard after the Sepang race to seal the win there. Rossi has slipped back to fifth in the championship but he is only three points off Dovizioso and has fourth firmly in his sights. The MotoGP paddock now packs up and moves straight to Malaysia for the next round in one week's time at Sepang.

Valentino Rossi - Position: 3rdTime: +5.707
"What a great race! Of course I would have preferred to be battling for the win but anyway it was a great feeling, a real show and I want to congratulate Jorge because he was very strong and didn't give up! Unfortunately I lost time at the start when he passed me so Stoner and Dovizioso got away, and by the time I passed him again they were too far ahead. At the end I was tired and my tyre was sliding a lot, it was a bit softer than I would have liked, so I knew I was going to be in trouble but I wanted the podium so much. Jorge came back at me and we had a great battle, proper racing - I think everyone watching enjoyed it. It's been a great weekend because we expected it to be difficult but in fact we've been strong in every session and worked very well on our bike. The shoulder is okay at the moment so let's go to Malaysia and see if we can continue like this, or better!"

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 4thTime: +6.221
"This was a big battle between Valentino and I, two warriors with the killer instinct. I have to say that at some points I do not think he was completely fair, we were both on the limit but some of his moves were maybe a bit too much and he touched me and pushed me wide when I don't think it was right. We are team-mates, I am fighting for the Riders' Championship but we are both fighting for the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championship as well and we have to remember this. I am disappointed to miss the podium of course because I wanted one at Yamaha's home, but this is racing. We chose to ride with the old engine to be safe and then I wasn't getting the best feeling from the front tyre, so things weren't perfect for me, but anyway we took some good points. We are very close to getting our dream and I really hope we can do it next weekend in Sepang."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
"The podium was our main target and it's been a very good weekend. Valentino was fast since Friday afternoon and I think the team did a great job today. We had to change our tyre choice after warm-up and make some small adjustments to make it work properly, but he made the fastest lap and had a very good pace throughout. Then we had this exciting battle in the last laps, which was thrilling. When two strong riders have the chance to fight like this it is always going to create a lot of enjoyment and Jorge didn't give up, but it was better for Valentino this time! We hope to see more of this for the fans and everyone watching."

Wilco Zeeelenberg - Team Manager
"We just need a few more points! This wasn't a perfect race for us and we struggled a bit when the track changed after Moto2, especially at the hard braking in turn one, but our target was to play it safe and take points so we are happy. Of course the end of the race was exciting, but Jorge is a winner and even with the situation with the championship he was never going to give up on the final podium spot easily. It was a great battle between the two strongest riders in the world but they are team-mates and Valentino took too many risks and touched Jorge a couple of times, which should not have happened when Jorge is fighting for the championship. Anyway, considering the front-end issues and the fact that we chose not to run the new engine, we have to be very happy with these points and now we are all just focused on Sepang and the possible championship victory there."

Edwards romps to season best finish in Yamaha's home race

Colin Edwards made a stunning return to the top six in MotoGP this afternoon, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider producing his best performance of 2010 to finish in a richly deserved fifth position.

With predicted rain never materialising, the 24-lap race was run in mild conditions and Edwards made a fast getaway from fifth place on the grid. He held fifth for the opening two laps, the American engaged in an exciting early fight with Italian duo Marco Simoncelli and Loris Capirossi.

Simoncelli took fifth on lap three but having comfortably pulled away from Capirossi, Edwards used all of his experience to exert intense pressure on Simoncelli. Knowing he was capable of running a much faster pace, Edwards was content to stalk Simoncelli until he made his decisive attack on lap 18.

Edwards then clearly demonstrated his superior speed, the 36-year-old opening up a three second gap on Simoncelli in the last seven laps to secure his best finish since the final round of 2009 in Valencia.

A sixth successive start from the second row of the grid had raised expectations that Ben Spies could continue his outstanding recent form. But a mistake under braking at turn five forced him into the gravel trap on lap two. Spies lost eight seconds with the off-track excursion and dropped down to 15th before he embarked on an enthralling recovery.

The Texan showcased his overtaking skills with a series of breathtaking moves that delighted a large contingent of Yamaha supporters in the 40,113-strong crowd . Lapping close to the pace of the leading group in the final stages after gambling with a radically revised front and rear suspension set-up, Spies clawed his way back into the top ten on lap 12 and eventually finished in eighth.

Colin Edwards - Position: 5thTime: +27.092

"In terms of the result I'm really happy because it is my first top six finish of the year and I think it was deserved after all the hard work the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team and me have been putting in to improve our results. And it is always good to get a result in Japan with the race being so important for Yamaha and the Tech 3 Team. I rode good all weekend and was only four-tenths off pole, but what I'm a little disappointed about is that I'm 27 seconds behind the winner. That's a big chunk of time and I'm riding as hard as I can. I feel comfortable and I feel good on the bike now we improved the setting but I guess we just have to shoot for being top non-factory rider. It was hard in the first few laps because I didn't have a lot of feel in the left-side of the rear tyre. But once I got confident, Simoncelli passed me but I was happy just to sit behind him and study him, check where I was faster while making sure I wasn't going to leave the door open for Capirossi. I think my rear tyre had good grip for a little bit longer than Simoncelli's and I managed to pass him, put my head down for a couple of laps and managed to pull a gap."

Ben Spies - Position: 8thTime: +35.572
"Considering everything that happened this weekend with me not being totally happy with the bike and then running off early on, I'm extremely happy to finish eighth, especially coming from 15th. We made a big change to the bike before the race with the geometry in the front and I ran a rear shock that we hadn't run all weekend and i t was a big step. It was a big gamble but it paid off. The front was a bit better in the turns and we definitely had better traction and it made the bike a bit easier to ride and more confidence inspiring. Going into turn five I think Loris was in front of me and it seemed like he braked really, really early. To avoid hitting him I had to move over and get on the kerb and run off track. After my pace in the warm-up I was wondering how I would be able to fight with anybody but I made some passes and I never gave up. I rode as hard as I could and while it wasn't my best result it was still a really good race. Even coming through the field I was still turning some really fast laps that without the mistake would have given me a chance of running in the top five."

Herve Poncharal - Team Manager
"I am very happy with today's race and I think Colin and Ben performed at their m aximum in the home race for Yamaha. We were determined to do well for Yamaha and I don't think we disappointed with both of them performing incredibly well. I think everybody at Yamaha and the Japanese fans really enjoyed the way both of them performed. Colin had by far his best result of the season and this weekend he has been back to the outstanding form he showed all last season. He's been working hard with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew for several races now to improve and this weekend that effort paid off. He had a good battle with Simoncelli that Colin won comfortably and I think we saw he used his experience today. It was unfortunate that Ben ran off the track so early because his potential was much higher than eighth. His fighting spirit was unbelievable and he never gave up and his lap times at the end would have easily put him in the top five. He demonstrated his determination today and after a positive winter test at Sepang, I'm confident he can be challenging bac k at the front again in Malaysia next weekend."

Dovizioso on the podium in home race
Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) fought for the victory to the final lap of the Japanese Grand Prix at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan, but ultimately finished second to Casey Stoner (Ducati).

Dovizioso was away quickly into the lead until Stoner passed him early on the first of 24 laps of the 4.801m Honda-owned circuit about 100k north of Tokyo.

Then began an epic battle, with Stoner trying to pull away and Dovizioso drawing him back in. Dovizioso saw that Stoner had a few strong points, but the Italian was strong in other areas. Their strengths canceled each other out.

The gap from first to second was under a second until the 17th lap, when Stoner just managed to open it up. And when Dovizioso had a moment a few laps from the end he had to abandon the victory chase.

Still, it was a strong showing and gave him encouragement as the series enters its most concentrated stretch, and, for one race, at least, without Dani Pedrosa.

Pedrosa was home in Spain after surgery to repair the left collarbone he fractured in a Friday practice crash. The surgery was deemed a success, but no date has been set for his return. With the Malaysian Grand Prix next weekend and the Australian Grand Prix a week after, the Spaniard has little time to recover from the physical trauma of the crash.

Even though he was half a world away, because of his strong season, which includes four wins, Pedrosa maintained second in the MotoGP World Championship to Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha). Dovizioso moved into fourth in the championship today with his fifth podium of the year.

Lorenzo finished fourth today after an epic battle, especially over the final two laps, with team-mate Valentino Rossi, who finished third.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) equaled his career best sixth place MotoGP finish. The tall Italian was set to earn an unprecedented fifth when he was passed in the final quarter of the race by veteran Colin Edwards (Yamaha) after suffering fatigue in his forearms. The Motegi circuit has a number of hard braking, downhill corners, more than any other track on the calendar and the constant stress finally took its toll.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) was running in eighth place when he missed a downshift due to weakness in his still mending leg and he ran off track. The mistake only cost him two places, but it put him in a no-man?s land and he rode a lonely race to finish ninth. The finish didn?t hurt his championship placing as he still holds eighth with four races remaining.

In his home race, Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) equaled his best finish. Racing in front of friends and family, Aoyama spent the first few laps getting his tyres up to temperature, after which he began moving to the front. From 15th on the first lap, Aoyama passed five others to finish tenth, equaling his best of the year from the season-opener in Qatar.

The race wasn?t one of the best for Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini). He started well and got as high as eighth place before traction issues began to crop up. Melandri was never able to get any heat into his tyres and also had brake problems. Eventually he finished a dispirited 11th.

There was no rest for the teams, as they had to quickly pack for next weekend?s race in Sepang, Malaysia, followed a week later by the Australian Grand Prix at Philip Island.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V): 2nd
?I pushed at 100 percent for the whole race and the lap times of Casey (Stoner) and me were pretty impressive and very consistent. At the beginning, Casey was really fast when the tyres weren?t fully up to temperature and at that moment I knew it was going to be a hard fight with him. I don?t know what Casey did to up his pace today but his speed was amazing. There were two or three places on that lap where he was faster than me every time, but I saw that he was also on the limit and so I kept pushing. It was hard to maintain the pace on the tyre in the last few laps and I nearly had a big highside three laps from the end - at that moment I knew I couldn?t win the race. It was a little bit disappointing because I wanted the win and I thought it was possible today, but I?m really happy to be back on the podium again. Following Casey I learned a lot about the strategy for tuning the electronics settings for the final part of the race when the tyre performance is dropping off, so this is really positive for the future. I want to say thank you to the team because I?m in this position thanks to their hard work. And also thanks to HRC - I?m really glad to have a good result at Honda?s home race.?

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 6th
?That was a really nice race for me and to be honest after the warm-up I thought I could have done even better and been a little closer to the front guys. I got a bad start though and couldn't manage it. Anyway, I had a positive race, setting a good pace until the end, when I had a few problems with my forearms and had to back off, losing touch with Colin Edwards. I would have liked to attack him again at the end of the race but I am happy and now the objective is to improve again in the next race.?

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V): 9th
?Honestly, I did not take a superb start but I was quite aggressive in the first part of the race. Then on lap ten at Turn 5 I missed the downshift because of my injured leg, which still hurts, and went wide in the gravel losing few places. After that it was not easy for me as I was alone in the race, but I am quite satisfied about this result as we still hold the 8th position in the championship. We have been waiting a long time for a good race and I think we made a good jog this weekend, especially on race trim. This top ten finish is mentally positive for me after the bad period I had after the injury. I want to thank the guys for their good job and their support in the last races. I am looking forward to racing again in Malaysia?.

Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP RC212V): 10th
?The conditions in the race was a bit cooler today and that was not so good for the tyres. I had to wait a couple of laps to warm the tyres up and then I could start to overtake the other riders in front of me. On this track you don?t have so many possibilities to pass them. This race was not ideal for me, but at least I could repeat my best result of the season so far. This week I started to understand my bike a bit better and especially as I know this track so well I could learn more about the bike and we improved the set up. Now I am looking forward to Malaysia, which is my favourite track.?

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V): 11th
?That was terrible ? another race just like all the rest. I got a good start but didn't have any grip. The tyres were cold from the first lap and I had a lot less traction than the guys around me. Even when I thought they were up to temperature there was no change and they felt like they were spent. The usual problems with the bike continue and I just can't get it stopped. When (Ben) Spies passed me I tried to push and stay with him but I just ran wide. It is a depressing situation and we have been completely forgotten about. Honda aren't helping and I can't understand why.?
