McGuinness Third in Macau Qualifying

McGuinness Third in Macau Qualifying

Stobart Motorsport rider John McGuinness will start tomorrow?s 39th Hotel Fortuna Macau Grand Prix from third position following the one and only qualifying session after today?s session was cancelled due to a number of accidents in the preceding WTCC car races which subsequently caused the timetable to overrun.

The 31 year old Morecambe racer posted a time of 2min 32.241secs, some 1.6 seconds behind five times winner and new Stobart Motorsport rider for 2006 Michael Rutter, and 0.7 seconds behind Austrian Thomas Hinterreiter.

?I?m a little bit disappointed to be over a second and a half behind Michael but I?m still getting used to the bike? said the 2001 winner for the Paul Bird Team. ?I could have done with the extra track time for sure but we?ll see what the race brings. Whether or not we can win remains to be seen but I?m not settling for anything else than a podium? concluded McGuinness who has finished runner up to Rutter over the past three years.

Making his Macau debut, team mate Dennis Hobbs qualified in 19th position with Manxman Paul Hunt in 26th out of the 36 riders as again, both riders missed out on improving their times due to the cancellation of Qualifying 2.

Team boss Paul Bird was relatively pleased going into the race:

?John needs time on the bike and cancelling that qualifying didn?t help us at all but I know John and I know he?ll give it his best in the race. Dennis and Big H did well considering they hadn?t cocked a leg over the bike until they got here. But hat?s off to Rutter and I may be having a word with him and reminding him who?s paying his wages next year if he doesn?t slow down!? jested Bird.

Rutter, who signed for the Stobart Motorsport team prior to jetting out to the Far East, has won five Macau Motorcycle Grands Prix in the past seven years and could equal fellow Briton Ron Haslam?s tally of six victories in tomorrow?s 15-lap race which gets underway at 15.10 local time (23:10 GMT).

Klaffi Honda's Cameron Donald Third at Macau!

Klaffi Honda's Cameron Donald Third at Macau!

Martin Finnegan, Callum Ramsey and Cameron Donald joined the Klaffi Honda Team for the 39th Macao Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 19th Nov 2005. Martin Finnegan (Superbike # 45) participated with a Honda Fireblade, Callum Ramsey (Supersport # 60) and Cameron Donald (Supersport # 86) with a Klaffi Honda CBR 600 RR.
Macau is the most challenging circuit in the world and maybe even tougher than the Tourist Trophy Isle of Man. The Circuito da Guia with its 6.2 kilometres leads through a real street canyon and up to a hilly copse. And then there is the Melco Hairpin with its generous width of 7 meters!
The impressive entry list of the 39th Macau GP included well known names as Michael Rutter, John McGuinness, Chris Palmer and Pere Riba.
The Klaffi Honda riders proved their performance already before the race. In the Qualifying sessions Callum Ramsey was fastest Supersport rider, Cameron Donald 4th. Martin Finnegan 14th in Superbike.
On Saturday the competitors had 15 laps to go. The weather conditions were perfect, sunny and dry. Callum Ramsey and Cameron Donald both did a great job. Cameron finished third in Supersport. Team mate Callum Ramsey was already on second position but crashed unfortunately in the last lap. Martin Finnegan / Superbike had a lot of bad luck at Macau. Caused by a technical problem he was not able to keep speed.

Superbike: 1. Michael Rutter (Honda), 2. John McGuiness (Honda), 3. Les Shand (Yamaha). Supersport: 1. Steve Allan (Kawasaki), 2. Ian Hutchinson (Honda), 3. Cameron Donald (Klaffi Honda)

Second Best For McGuinness in Macau

Second Best For McGuinness in Macau

The 31 year old Morecambe racer had to give second best once again to his Macau nemesis Michael Rutter who claimed a record equalling sixth victory around the Far Eastern circuit.

Riding the Honda Fireblade for the Paul Bird team, McGuinness trailed Rutter in the early stages before settling for a safe second place as the race progressed and at the end of the 15 laps, the eight times TT winner was happy enough with his performance.

?I should be getting used to finishing second behind Michael now but as soon as he upped the pace, I had no answer. I had a huge moment on some oil and that affected me and from then on, I wasn?t prepared to push it. It?s not the win I had hoped for but second place under the circumstances is good enough? said the 2001 winner.

Making his Macau debut, team mate Dennis Hobbs, who had qualified in 19th position was riding brilliantly when he stalled the machine at the ultra-slow Melco Hairpin which relegated him from his top ten placing whilst Manxman Paul Hunt put in a sterling performance to claim 13th at the chequered flag.

Team boss Paul Bird commented afterwards:

?John seemed to be lacking in confidence so the instructions to him were to go out and have a good, safe race and that?s what he did. He must be getting fed up of following Michael home but there?s no doubting Rutter is the king around here and it?s good to know he?ll be here on our bikes next year and in a way, we?ve won all round. As for Dennis and Paul, they both did us proud and we?ve enjoyed having them with us. Dennis has had a permanent smile on his face since we arrived and Big H keeps thanking me!?

Rutter, who signed for the Stobart Motorsport team prior to jetting out to the Far East, equalled fellow Briton Ron Haslam?s tally of six victories and afterwards he said:

?It?s great to round off a frustrating season with a win and that?s just the tonic that I need to go into the winter testing schedule with my new team. I?m going to make sure Birdy buys the drinks all night tonight!?

Footnote: Six of the European competitors in the 37-strong field pulled out of the race at the end of the opening lap as a sign of respect for 45-year-old Frenchman Bruno Bonhuil who suffered fatal injuries in an accident during the warm up session earlier in the day.
