Hey everyone just thought I would say hello and introduce my bird (couldn't see an intro section).

View attachment IMG_6608[40].jpg
She's an 07 with a few mods already,I've started a YouTube channel to document the mods i'm planning(I've got a full Ti Moriwaki system in a box waiting to go on).
Check it out here :)

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul.

Thanks for sponsoring the site, it helps keep the lights on.

Looks like you may well have one of the very late Birds there, and Iron Nail is in my opinion the second best paint scheme On a Bird.

If you aren’t already aware One thing to bear in mind is that generally (some have found otherwise) Birds and foam/K&N filters don’t get on well, particularly with aftermarket can fitted…..sticking to paper is the way to go unless you have a full rolling road session with someone who knows what they are doing.

Standard paper at the minute (y) may look at getting something different when I can afford a PC5 and I can get the Moriwaki on.

Iron Nail didn't know it was called that thanks! Yep its a 2007.

Idea for the bike is to take a bit of weight off whilst still keeping the character e.g. two up luggage etc.

Just bought a lithium battery 4.1kg down to 1.16kg really nice saving there :)

I remember way back that JAWS mentioned about Lithium batteries not being compatible with the Bird's charging circuit. Something about variable charging rates.

Rings an alarm bell with me as well.

About the size of Big Ben.

I was told that too but I put one on mine a couple of years ago and it's been fine. It is a '96 though and I believe that weren't as prone to the charging issues of the FI ones.

Hope you got it really cheap.. If you use the bird regularly it is unlikely to last that long.. That is, unless you bought one with built in BMS and regulator, AND have bought the matching reg rec
Lithium batteries are fantastic IF they are charged right .. they are pretty fussy and to be honest the charging circuit on a standard Bird could not be farther from being compatible
I do not want to be a scare monger but google lifPo4 fires, then see if you want to keep it on the Bird

Rot Ro Raggy (Scooby doo voice).

Its the NOCO one also got the NOCO charger if that makes any difference!

Thanks for the heads up!

I'll let you know how it turns out!

Que the my bird is on fire post!

https://no.co/nlp14 this is the Battery

says it has dynamic BMS

Jaws any links to matching reg/rec?
No mate.. never found one suitable after weeks of looking
But that was a couple of years ago and there may well be something available now
The charge voltage is critical.
Bulk charge rate should remain at 14.4 to14.6 until fully charged at which time it must switch to float .. What that voltage is set to is somewhat up to the user but 13.8 is fairly common
What ever, the voltage MUST remain static and solid
There is the other issue too.
A lithium will suck all the amps it can get until it goes in to float
On an EFI Bird, where the genny is on the edge already running it flat out is likely to force an early bath out of it

That unit does have a very clever BMS ( if it does what it says ) as it must have a current limiter but did you click on the specs ?
( In red at the bottom )
Charging voltage 14.6v
Ah capacity is only 4 amps..
Do not for god sake leave the bike ticking over with the lights on
Even if ( as it will ) it gets some sort of charge from the bird, said bird does not put ANY charge of any sort below nominally 1500rpm but more usually 2000rpm
Even with the standard 10Ah unit folk have still come unstuck in traffic jams with a flat battery

Just noticed something VERY odd in the specs...........

Charging temp -10c
It is generally accepted by the rest of the world that LifePo4 should never be charged below 0c as it damages ( severely ) the cell integrity
This is well worth reading ( as it may save your bike and your life ! )

Really interesting thanks Jaws.

Found this could be BS as I'm not massively electrically minded.

Doubt it'll ever see -10c 0C is a definite possibility but I'll monitor my Garage temps and keep the above in mind when its plugged in.

So If I put a mulitmeter on the battery terminals(e.g. battvolt not charging is 12v and charging would be 14V) I wont get anything below 2k?(again not electrically minded).

I'll give it a go and report back... keep ya fingers crossed for me!

Indeed .. Will def keep digits crossed :)
With the bike running at 2 k revs for a few minutes ideally you should see 13.8v on the battery
A real test will be to turn the bike on but not running
Put the meter on the battery and wait till the voltage drops to 12.1v
Fire the bike up and the battery voltage should go straight up to exactly 14.6 and stay there for a while without altering, then suddenly ( welll.. in a very short time from when it starts to drop ) go down to 13.8 and stay there again without fluctuation
If the BMS is as good as they say that will happen and all will be well :)

This is my latest battery
Its 3000 watts, or 250 aH at 12v
That ally plate you see with the wires going to it is the BMS

The addition of a cheap digital voltmeter and/or led charging light are good investment(s) on a Bird…..if nothing else it will let you know if the charging system fries…you’ll have about 25 miles in an FI until you are stuck in the side of the road. Really easy to install.
