It's all pants

What is the difference between a road maintenance vehicle doing 10mph and a traffic jam doing 10mph and less. Oh and what if you travel between the white line and the cat eyes?

It maybe pants but

those are the rules

if you cross the line for any reason other than those I've just quoted then its russian roulette time

please don't shoot the messenger

PS what possible reason could you give the nice officer if he pulled you?
Unfortunately ignorance of the law doesn't go down too well........

Dear officer

"PS what possible reason could you give the nice officer if he pulled you?"

I woz only filtering guv 'onest! 8l1nd

The highway code does say you can pass stationary vehicles so you can get round jams, just have to wait until a car either stops or gives you enough room between it and the line I guess to make sure Mr Plod is happy. :bang:

Well Bob, I did say I was'nt condoning it. But here is an example. The A46 from J18 M4 down to Batheaston bypass. Lots of swoopy bends and shortish straighter sections. Used to be a mix of dotted white lines and solid. Now its all solid, because of accidents involving cars, vans, lorries etc. But in the parts where there used to be dotted white lines, a bike like a Blackbird could easily be passed in a fraction of a second. Cars cant do it, and the accident rate proved it, but a bike could.
Yes, I agree, its best to have a common policy, its just that most policy is decided with 4 wheeled vehicles in mind. And, a friend of mine got killed (in his car) by someone else coming round the wrong side of the road where it was still a broken line. So lines are not necessarily a guarantee of safety, because people break rules whenever they see fit, for whatever reason.

Just for the record, no ,I do not overtake on solid white lines, but there are plenty of times that I know I could have done easily and safely, on the bike.
The main reason I dont do it (apart from my licence) is because I know it really pisses people off inside their cars and gives a needlessly negative image of biking.
