I am currently installing a set of taller bars on my bike similar to the LSL setup. If anyone is interested, I will post up some progress shots.

I wanted to have higher bars, but didn't want to shell out a lot of cash. I decided to make my own...

Awesome! I don't need any changes to mine for now as it 'fits' just fine! But I love seeing the work and engineering that goes into things like this. Something completely different but looks just fine too!

Welcome Kirkster, nice start to the BIRD postings !

I'd be interested to know how much that set up effects your riding position, I have a lot of trouble with the old hips and knees even with the peg lowering kit, changed seat and standard bar raisers so once you've done your mods I'd be very interested to see a report on how it effects your riding, and how much you'd charge for a set !!

Thanks, Smix.

My last fast bike was a heavily modded ZX-12R back in 2000. The position didn't bother me at that time. I have since gotten used to dual sports being so comfortable. When I rode the Blackbird for the first time to work for 60 miles, I had a kink in my neck that lasted all day. I knew I had to make some changes.

I wanted it to look as stock as possible and didn't want it to be an eyesore. I thought about it for a while, and then just starting trying out different risers and bars until I found what I liked.

Thank you, russ.

Here are some comparison shots during mock-up. Notice my wrist angle, and look at my back compared to the vertical line in the garage door.

Both nearly straight. I think I will end up with something quite comfortable, but still sporty.

I ordered a different screen because it needs to be trimmed a bit to turn full lock. I don't want to cut up any original parts. Plus, it will be a touring screen since I will now be more upright.

From this angle, you can see that the reach is almost the same. These are risers I decided against because they didn't match the front profile of the tank like I wanted them to. The bars look huge in this shot, but are only about 3/4" to 1" wider per side.

Cheers Kirk, it does look good and your hips aint as scrunched up (technical term!) as the standard position. I like the shape of the actual raisers as well, not just like a lump of metal but shaped.
Definately gonna have to do something like thatm you should go into production mate I'm sure you'd get a few orders !!

I liked the look of the risers on the right, but they came too close to the tank and their footprint was too wide for the top tree. I could have made them work, but they didn't match up as well as the Valkyrie risers on the left.

Valkyrie risers temporarily held in place.

More shots to follow in the days to come.

Believe it or not, I don't have any special tools. I used a hacksaw and a halfround file to make those plates. I turned on the music, popped open a beer (or two - who's counting) and about an hour or so later had it fabbed up.

Speigler has a similar setup for $410 USD. I estimate I'll come in around $300, but will have a touring screen, higher bars, and all stainless lines in the front for that price. Speigler's riser's are definately nicer, though. In that respect, I guess you get what you pay for.

Thank you very much, Oldbull.

They are alloy. I got some scrap steel and aluminum from work. I orginally thought the alloy wouldn't be strong enough, but I experimented with it and couldn't get a small piece like I used to bend or warp by drawing a bolt down on it, so I decided to use the alloy.

Plus, the alloy is much easier to work with and won't rust.

I installed the front brake lines today and started bleeding them but ran out of time and didn't get to post any pics yet. I'll get some more shots after the holidays.

Ok, I just wrapped up. Sorry I don't have any progress shots, only completed shots.

Zero Gravity smoke touring screen.

Galfer +5" stainless lines.

Here's how much I had to trim to clear the reservoir. I used a coping saw with a fine toothed blade, then cleaned up the edge with a coarse hand file, 400 grit sandpaper followed by 600 grit, 1200 grit, and finally 1500 grit paper. My edge is smoother than the factory edge.

Here is a shot of full lock to the left. There is about 5/8" clearance between the screen and the reservoir.

Now I need to give her a shakedown run to make sure everything is in order.

I wanted to take some progress shots of the ss line install, but my wife was holding the camera hostage over the holidays!!!! I could never find it!!
