Yamaha Head Back to the USA for the Indianapolis Grand Prix

The MotoGP paddock heads stateside again this week for the second of the two US rounds of the 2011 MotoGP Championship. The legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host round 12 of the Championship, the second home race for Yamaha Factory Racing rider Ben Spies. The 2010 Indianapolis event became a feat of endurance for the MotoGP riders with track temperatures hitting 50 degrees over qualifying and race day. The sweltering conditions raised grip issues across the grid and the heat was physically exhausting for the riders.

Lorenzo struggled over the entire weekend to find a perfect set up for the difficult conditions last year, enduring the heat to finally deliver a well earned podium finish with third in the race. The World Champion started from second on the grid just behind Spies. Lorenzo has a good record at the circuit, claiming victory in 2009 and his first ever wet podium in 2008.

Despite the conditions MotoGP rookie Spies enjoyed his most successful race of the year at Indianapolis in 2010. The Texan rider took a scorching maiden pole position start from future team mate Lorenzo and converted it into a season best finish of second on race day, his first MotoGP podium.

With 257,000 permanent seats the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the largest spectator sporting facility in the world and fills to capacity for its flagship events, the Indy 500 and Allstate 400 car races. Originally constructed in 1909 with a 2.5-mile oval, an exciting 16-turn motorcycle road circuit, which includes part of the historic oval, was purpose-built for MotoGP. The circuit was resurfaced earlier this year, improving the grip levels considerably for the riders.

As part of Yamaha's ongoing 50th Anniversay of Grand Prix racing celebrations, Yamaha Factory Racing will again run the special red and white livery at Indianapolis.

Jorge Lorenzo

"Indy is a track I really enjoy. I treasure wonderful moments like the podiums in 2008 and 2010, and my victory in 2009 wearing Captain America's helmet. I am now in good shape and am ready to regain the ground we lost in Brno, where a mistake put a distance between Casey and I. I hope the good energy I feel in this track will still help us to fight for the title. I am really looking forward to going back to the US and riding my M1."

Ben Spies

?I?m really hoping to be completely fit for this weekend. I?ve still got some numbness in the arm but it is better than it was at Brno. We?ve been working hard to get it right and we will of course give it 100% as always. I?ve been looking forward to this race all year; it was pretty crazy last year as a rookie to take pole and a second in the race. We?re going to put on a good show for all the home fans and see what we can do.?

Wilco Zeelenberg

?We had some problems at Indianapolis last year but they resurfaced the circuit so we're looking forward to checking it out as it wasn?t in the best shape before. Jorge struggled to get the bike set up properly on it in 2010. With Ben?s excellent experience over there we believe we are able to fight for victory or podiums. If we want to win the World Championship we need to win races and start beating Casey, it is going to be a big challenge but we?re ready for it!?

Massimo Meregalli

?I?m hoping Ben?s physical condition is better for the weekend; I?m hoping that he will be 100% because it is his home race and expectations are quite high. The team are going to use some new updates that we tested in Brno; these will help both Ben and Jorge challenge for the front. Last year both riders finished on the podium so we are confident for this event.?

Bautista ready to take on the ?Brickyard?

Rizla Suzuki is on its way Stateside for the 12th round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship which will be held at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway in America.

?lvaro Bautista will be looking to continue with the huge potential that has been shown by him and the Suzuki GSV-R is recent races. He looked likely to fight for a top-five finish last time out at Brno, before lady-luck robbed him of the opportunity and he crashed. He is in a determined and focused mood to get a good qualifying position on Saturday to give him a better chance of getting away with the quick group come race-day and show what both he and the Rizla Suzuki are capable of.

Indianapolis will be staging a MotoGP for the fourth time in its illustrious history when the bikes take to the track on Sunday 28th August. The ?Brickyard? is more usually associated with Indy Car and NASCAR racing, but the two-wheeled event has quickly become a highlight on the circuit?s calendar. Known as the 'Brickyard' due to over three million paving bricks that used to cover the whole surface, now less than a metre of these bricks exist at the start line of 4,216m track. This fascinating symbol to the old days of racing is now simply known as the ?Yard of Bricks?. The circuit has a permanent seating capacity for more than 250,000 people and a big crowd is expected this weekend when MotoGP rolls into town. The fans will also be entertained by not only the on-track excitement, but many other off-track events, both at the ?Brickyard? and in downtown Indianapolis ? making this one of the party Grands Prix of the year.

Rizla Suzuki will be rolling out on to ?Gasoline Alley? on Friday for two free practice sessions. This will be followed by another practice on Saturday morning and then the all-action qualifying session in the afternoon. Sunday?s 28-lap race gets underway at 14.00hrs local time (18.00hrs GMT) when Bautista will be going all-out to add his name to history books of this famous circuit.

?lvaro Bautista:

?We have certainly made some big steps with the GSV-R over the last few races, but we still need to work on things at Indianapolis. We need find out what the true potential of the bike is and I need to improve my qualifying session performance. It is difficult to see if we can compete with the guys at the front if I am starting at the back of the grid and I have to use so much time and energy to get up to them. These are things that we are determined to do and if we are successful in them then who knows what the bike and the team are capable of producing. I finished eighth at Indianapolis last year and I know we can do better than that now with the package we have. I will be pushing right from the start and trying to make all the hard work we?ve done in recent races give us a good end result in America.?

Edwards and Crutchlow ready for legendary Indianapolis challenge

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team embarks on another American adventure this weekend, with Colin Edwards and Cal Crutchlow ready to tackle the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit.

Edwards is looking forward to racing in front of his home fans for the second time in just over a month, the Indianapolis round coming hot on the heels of his recent eighth place finish in the US Grand Prix at the Laguna Seca track in California.

The Texan is particularly looking forward to checking out the infield section of the 2.620 miles circuit, which has been completely resurfaced in readiness for round 12 of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.

T he 37-year-old will arrive in Indianapolis confident he can consolidate his position inside the top 10 in the World Championship rankings while also strengthening his bid to finish leading non-factory rider this season. He is currently on an impressive run of six consecutive top 10 finishes to sit ninth in the rankings ahead of this Sunday's 28-lap race.

This weekend's race presents Crutchlow with another difficult but intriguing learning experience. The British rider has never seen the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is steeped in motorsport history and world famous for hosting the Indy 500, but he's looking forward to getting to work with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 crew after a positive test session at the Brno circuit recently.

Crutchlow made improvements to the front-end feeling of his Yamaha YZR-M1 machine and he is determined to end a frustrating run of results in Indianapolis to get his bid for the pres tigious Rookie of the Year crown back on track.
Colin Edwards

?Racing at home in America for the second time in a few weeks is awesome and I'm really looking forward to this weekend. The build-up to the Indianapolis race is always pretty special because you've got the mystique and the history of the place and I really like that part of it. The people at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have done a fantastic job to make MotoGP a success and hopefully the fans will get to see an exciting show this weekend. The track isn't too technical or demanding but I'm looking forward to riding on the new pavement on the infield. We all know it was pretty bumpy in parts but they've taken our feedback on board and done something to improve it, which is brilliant. I'm on a consistent run of results at the moment and hopefully that will continue this we ekend. I'd like to be a further up the order and pushing inside the top six a little more, but the guys in front of me every week are all on factory bikes, so I think all of us inside the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team are giving the maximum to do the best job we can.?
Cal Crutchlow

"I am really looking forward to going to Indy because I've heard so much about what a fantastic facility the Motor Speedway is. But without any previous experience of riding there, I'm anticipating another difficult challenge. It is one I am relishing though because I'm determined to end this difficult period in the Championship. I haven't scored enough points in the last few races, so I'm looking forward to learning Indy but also getting a good result there too. The Yamaha is a good bike, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team is brilliant, and I believe in my own ability, so we've got to put a ll the ingredients together to deliver the performances we know we are capable of. The test after the Brno race was really beneficial because we could work on the bike a lot and I could focus on adapting my style a lot more. We've got some more ideas to help us in the future, so hopefully a good result this weekend will help set me up for a strong finish to the season.?

Honda riders hit the brickyard

Just five weeks after the masterful victory by Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) in the U.S. Grand Prix in Monterey, California, the MotoGP World Championship returns to America, this time with all three championship classes and at one of the most famous racing venues in the world.

The fourth running of the Indianapolis Grand Prix will be held on the famed and improved Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At the request of the riders, the Speedway repaved most of the infield, which gives the track a consistent surface over its entire 4.218Km length. The bumps on corner entry claimed a number of riders last year, including Stoner, but not Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V), who won last year?s Indy GP, one of a career season best four wins. Stoner and Pedrosa, along with fellow Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso, return to the American Midwest looking to be first across the ?Yard of Bricks? at the end of the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship.

Stoner?s dream season continued in the Czech Grand Prix where he made short work of the field and cruised to a dominant victory. The 25-year-old Australian had support from his Honda team-mates in leading the company?s first podium sweep since the U.S. Grand Prix in 2006. Dovizioso was second and a jubilant Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) earned a long-awaited and well-deserved first MotoGP podium in third. Stoner?s sixth win out of 11 tries gives him a 32 point championship lead over Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha).

For Stoner to continue his record of podium appearances in every race he?s finished this year he?ll have to conquer one of his least welcoming tracks. The Brickyard may well be Stoner?s worst track over the past three years and the only current track where he?s never finished on the podium. In the inaugural 2008 running he was a distant fourth in the hurricane-shortened race. The following year he was on a brief hiatus while treating a medical issue and last year he crashed. Considering his accomplishments this season, his history at IMS shouldn?t mean much.
Dovizioso has been consistently near the podium in the three previous Indianapolis races. He was fifth in 2008, fourth in 2009, and fifth again in last year?s searing heat. Dovi had expected to do better in 2010, but with grip compromised by the afternoon heat the 25?year-old Italian wasn?t able to match his pace in qualifying. Coming off his best finish of the season in Brno, Dovizioso will be looking to strengthen his third place in the championship.
Pedrosa is ready to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in Brno. The Spaniard had taken his first pole of the season and was second to team-mate Stoner when he fell, unhurt, on the third lap. To that point he?d been strong in the previous races, winning in Germany and finishing third in the U.S. Grand Prix prior to the summer break.

Indy has been welcoming to Pedrosa. In 2009 he qualified on pole and last year did even better. From fifth on the grid, and half a second off the pace, Pedrosa took the lead from pole-sitting American Ben Spies on the seventh of 28 laps and romped to victory, the third of his four on the season.
Simoncelli was also affected by last year?s conditions and cautious not to fall prey to the slippery surface. The MotoGP rookie fought with a trio of other riders that was reduced to one in the battle for seventh. It took a perfect last lap for the then 23-year-old Italian to prevail in seventh place, and just by .085s. ?Super Sic? likes the Indy layout as evidenced by his win here on a 250 in 2009 and his pole position in 2008.
More will be expected of the former 250cc World Champion now that he?s shown he?s a legitimate podium contender.

The 2010 Indy race was one of the more difficult of Hiroshi Aoyama?s (San Carlo Honda Gresini) rookie MotoGP campaign. It was here that he returned to racing following a two-month injury layoff after breaking his back in morning warm-up at the British Grand Prix. The Japanese star wasn?t fully fit, which made dealing with the hot climate especially difficult.

Aoyama was also injured this season-he was one of several riders to get caught out on cold tyres at the Dutch TT, but has since recovered. His best showing at Indianapolis came en route to the 2009 250cc World Championship, when he finished second to Simoncelli.
Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP RC212V) sped to the fifth of his seven Moto2 wins here last year, despite being at less than peak fitness. The Spaniard rode bravely with a fever and body pains that made the heat unbearable. And when he left Indianapolis he was well on his way to the inaugural Moto2 World Championship.
This year has been less successful for the veteran from Manresa, though he put in one of his best showings of the season in Brno. The team has worked tirelessly to find a technical solution for Elias, whose difficulty getting heat into the rear tyre is well documented.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the world?s great sporting venues, the largest and highest capacity sporting venue in the world, though not a great motorcycle race track. Epic in scale, it boasts 250,000 permanent seats on its vast, more than 100-year-old campus. The Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Brickyard 400 are the two signature events on the 2.5-mile four-corner oval, with crowds of hundreds of thousands filling most of the seats and the infield. The track known as ?The Brickyard? has plenty of history for the four wheel set, including hosting Formula One for several years, but its flat, featureless nature will never be a favourite of the MotoGP crowd. Instead it?s the history, hospitality and atmosphere the riders soak up, especially the Americans who were raised in an era when the Indianapolis 500 was the most important auto race of the year.

The original road course was designed for Formula One, which ran clockwise compared to MotoGP?s anti-clockwise. The motorcycle layout uses only 872m of the front straight before tucking into the road course, which is heavily stop-start and lacking in character. The first sequence of corners was designed specifically for MotoGP, after which the track rejoins the F-1 layout that was last used in 2007. There are virtually none of the high speed corners that riders enjoy, and rarely do the MotoGP bikes get to stretch their legs. Passing zones are limited and overtaking is mostly done under braking. The final sequence is a pair of back-to-back 90 degree corners which exit onto the front stretch.

That said, the MotoGP field of 17 should enjoy the track more than it has in the past. The paving eliminated the track?s many bumps, though a recent test by American riders found the surface to be slippery and abrasive, which is often the case with new asphalt. That should change once some rubber gets laid down on the racing line, but tyre technicians will be on the alert for excessive wear on Friday. The track now has a mostly consistent racing surface, except across the ?Yard of Bricks? at the finish line, which have been in place since a 1961 repaving when all but that one meter of the original paving stones was replaced. Tradition dictates that the race winner and his team kiss the bricks, a tradition the Honda riders would like to continue this year.

HONDA MotoGP RIDER QUOTES

Repsol Honda Casey Stoner says:

?In the past seasons the track at Indy has been extremely bumpy and also slightly dangerous, so I'm looking forward to going there and riding the new surface. It will also be nice to ride the Honda there, as it took a lot of work to get the set up right on the Ducati at such a peculiar circuit. I've only ridden the circuit in 2008 and 2010 and we were pretty competitive there last year, but then I lost the front in the race, so it will be good to get there, test the new surface and get to work on the set up on my RC212V.?

Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso says:

?We arrive in Indy after a podium finish in Brno and I hope we can continue this momentum. The Indianapolis racetrack is a typical American venue with great facilities and huge grandstands. The track is not particularly interesting, but all in all it?s a very nice event. This year the track has been resurfaced in some parts, so for sure it will be much more fun to ride, as in the past it was very bumpy and there were different kind of asphalts. Last year in the practice and qualifying sessions we were fast but we struggled in the race, finishing fifth. I?m confident we can be competitive again this year. We are very motivated and focused.?

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa says:

?I'm heading to Indianapolis and really looking forward to the race. Last year we had a good race there and I hope I can repeat this again. The asphalt has changed, so we will have to adapt to the new surface, check how the tyres are working there and look for the best race setup possible. Physically I'm improving little by little; already in Brno I felt better than in the past months, so I hope I can be in good shape for the race. Obviously the last race result was very disappointing for me and my team after such a good weekend, but we take the positive things from it and move forward.?

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli says:

?A weight was lifted off my shoulders at Brno with my first ever podium in MotoGP and my 30th podium in all categories. It was a huge source of satisfaction because we have been chasing it since the opening race of the season and didn't quite manage it for various reasons. We needed it and I am happy for myself, the team, Honda and everybody who has believed in me. That kind of cloud is no longer hanging over us and hopefully that will make everything easier in the second half of the season. I am feeling strong and determined and I travel to America in the right mood to continue this positive progress. Indianapolis is a circuit I like overall, although I do tend to struggle a little compared to the other smaller riders because of the first gear final corner that leads onto a really long straight. This is a problem for us, but we will do our best to work it out and try to ensure it hinders us as little as possible. I took the win at Indianapolis in 250 in 2009 and I was on pole in 2008 when the race was cancelled because of the hurricane. The team and I are highly motivated and hope to continue in the same way we found in Brno.?

San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Hiroshi Aoyama says:

?Ninth place at Brno wasn't an amazing result, but it was positive for me because I recovered my physical condition and my confidence with the bike. After the Czech Republic Grand Prix I am feeling more motivated and determined for the second half of the season. I needed to rediscover my confidence in myself and in the RC212V, and I think Brno was a positive weekend in that respect. Now I go to Indianapolis in a different mood. I finished second here behind Marco Simoncelli in the 250cc race a couple of years ago and returned to action here last year after missing six races through injury. It wasn't an easy weekend for me, but I managed to finish the race and I enjoyed the track so I am very much looking forward to a stronger showing this weekend.?

LCR Honda rider Toni Elias says:

?Indianapolis is another race track that I like very much including his history and the warmth of the American fans. It has always been a tough track with many bumps and mixed tarmac, but it suits my riding style. Last year I won the race aboard the Moto2. After the positive result of the last race in Brno and the good performance of the test in Brno, I am leaving Spain with a high motivation. We have closed the gap to the front riders and with more adjustments we can aim to stay with (Nicky) Hayden, (Colin) Edwards and (Hiroshi) Aoyama.?

TOP TEN FOR DE PUNIET IN THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE AT INDIANAPOLIS

Positive first day of work for the riders of the Pramac Racing Team. The French rider, Randy De Puniet, finished in tenth place with just over a second and a half to the fastest of of the day, Casey Stoner. His teammate, Loris Capirossi, has finished in fourteenth position but is confident for the next two days of work on the Indianapolis circuit.

Marco Rigamonti Randy De Puniet Track Engineer

"It's been a positive day all despite the track conditions are not the best. The new asphalt track conditions changes almost at every lap, but in the afternoon, the situation seems to have improved for us. The biggest problem is that the front tire deteriorates too quickly and tomorrow we will study some solutions to help our rider."

Randy De Puniet Pramac Racing 10th in 142.339

The best thing about today is that I dont have any more pain in my body. My back feel much better and I can now use my full body to move the bike. I am at 100% and very happy about it ! At the moment the tenth position is quite a good result but I hope to improve during the weekend. The main problem we are fighting against is the front tyre: the new asphalt is a bit hard on the tyre and we have to understand how to solve this problem otherwise it will be difficult to finish the race.

Loris Capirossi Pramac Racing
- 14th in 143.034

"I am quite satisfied with how we built the bike in the second session. Certainly we can still improve a lot for the upcoming practices. The grip of the tires is not the best but unlike other riders this should not be so bad. This is a positive thing that could come back to our advantage during Sunday's race."

Ben Spies Attacks the Brickyard at Indianapolis

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Ben Spies got straight down to business at the legendary Indianapolis circuit today in the first free practice sessions of the Grand Prix weekend. The Texan delivered an impressive performance in front of his home crowd, topping the timesheets in the morning session with a 1?43.260. The afternoon session saw the grip levels improve dramatically, allowing Spies to take nearly two and a half seconds off his time and record a best of 1?40.918. He led for the majority of the session, only dropping to second at the end, a mere 0.194 from provisional pole.

Jorge Lorenzo had a difficult start to the day along with the majority of the MotoGP grid, struggling to find grip on the newly resurfaced Indianapolis track. The 125cc and Moto2 classes helped to increase the grip level over the lunchtime period and some key set up changes by the team brought the World Champion out fighting in the second session. Lorenzo was straight up into the top three and was the only rider to contest the fastest spot with his team mate for most of the session. He ended the second session in fourth position, 0.737 from the front.

Ben Spies Position : 2nd Time: 1'40.918 Laps: 29

?I feel a lot better now, almost ok but when I?m off the bike I?m more in pain which is frustrating. It was a good start today, the first session I was waiting to see if the track was going to stay the same but in the end in the afternoon it improved a lot. We were able to be in the top three in both sessions which is great. The track is going to get even better for tomorrow so we're looking forward to making another step forward and seeing what we can do.?

Jorge Lorenzo Position : 4th Time: 1'41.461 Laps: 27

"I started today struggling with the new asphalt. The morning was not good, but FP2 was much better and my feeling was really good. I've got grip on the rear now but I still have some problems with the front. I think we can still improve a lot in some parts. Ben is riding very, very well and it means I can be closer. I will try tomorrow to be at the same level as him.?

Wilco Zeelenberg Team Manager

?The second free practice was a big jump from the morning with much more grip available. We made some small changes and Jorge felt a lot better on the bike. The tyres are going down quite quickly as there is still a lot of dirt on the track so we need to find a way to ensure we can finish the race with enough grip. We compared two different set ups, one was clearly better so for tomorrow we know our direction. For today we are happy with the improvements we have made.?

Massimo Meregalli Team Director

?It?s definitely a good start today and the circuit conditions are improving. The bike behaviour is good so we are working to finalise the bike set up for Ben, overall he is happy so far. He still has a small issue with his arm but hopefully he will be ok for Sunday as he is proving that he can do a good job here. Jorge made a good improvement from the morning, the team found the right way to improve the bike. Tomorrow they will make another step and on Sunday I fully expect he will be up there.?

Bautista in the top-10 at a hot and slippery Indianapolis

Rizla Suzuki?s ?lvaro Bautista achieved a solid result at Indianapolis in America today with ninth place on the leader-board to show for his hard work.

Bautista was one of the busiest riders today, as he completed 41 laps around the 4,216m circuit during the two sessions He recorded his best time of 1?42.231 on his penultimate lap and is sure that both he and the Suzuki GSV-R have more to give this weekend. Bautista worked hard with his crew to get the best of the difficult conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the newly surfaced circuit presented a whole lot of problems for all riders. The recently laid asphalt has not had much use, making it very slippery, but as the day wore on - and more rubber was laid down by the bikes from all three classes - the conditions improved, enabling Bautista to record a time three seconds quicker in the afternoon than he did in the morning.

Today?s practices were held in bright sunshine and air temperatures rose to 31?C. Current World Championship leader Casey Stoner on a Honda recorded the fastest time of the day, with reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo fourth.

Bautista will have one more practice session tomorrow morning, followed by an hour of qualifying in the afternoon, when he will be going all out to get a good grid position for Sunday?s 28-lap race.

?lvaro Bautista:

?This afternoon I was able to improve my lap-time because the track conditions were better than they were this morning. We still have some problems with turning the bike - we didn?t have good grip this morning because of the new surface, so this afternoon we tried to get more grip from the rear. We changed the setting of the bike, but because the track had improved and grip was better we lost a bit more turning in the corner. Now we know the track is much better, so for tomorrow we will try another setting and I?m sure that will improve things even further. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am happy with situation at the moment. We are in ninth position and I know we can still improve quite a lot. I hope to continue with the way we have been working today and in recent weeks in tomorrow?s sessions and I think we can take the bike further forward ready for Sunday.?

ROSSI AND HAYDEN WORK ON GP11.1 SETUP

The hot weather and newly resurfaced track at Indianapolis made conditions very slippery this morning, which complicated work for the riders and teams on the first day of the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden followed two different paths in their search for the right setup for the GP11.1, with the Italian suffering more from the rapidly improving grip as the riders cleaned the track. Both are confident of improving tomorrow.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 8th (1:41.789)

?It definitely took a few laps to feel out the new surface and get some rubber down this morning, but toward the end of the afternoon session, you could really start carrying some speed in a few corners. I have to remember that I probably need a little bit of time to understand the bike, and the team needs more time to understand which direction to work. Still, we?re too far off the pace for my home track, and I certainly had hoped to be faster today. We?ll just stay positive and keep working toward Sunday. The new bike definitely does some things better, but we?ve got to get some weight to transfer to the front so that I can get it to turn.?

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 11th (1:42.405)

?This morning the track conditions were really critical. There was no grip, and it seemed like we were riding in the wet. Things improved a lot in the afternoon though, which is a sign that the asphalt is good and that it was just very dirty since it hadn?t been ridden on yet. It?s also a good sign for tomorrow because the conditions should continue to improve. Also, there are fewer bumps, so they did a good job. As for us, we didn?t expect the grip to improve so much this afternoon and we had to chase a setup the whole session, as I really couldn?t feel the bike. Tomorrow we?ll completely change the balance. Nicky didn?t go bad, so we?ll try to improve as well: the step forward that we made at Brno is still there. We just tried a set up a little too strange since we didn?t expect the conditions to change so much from one session to the next.?

Edwards brimming with confidence after fast start in Indianapolis
Colin EdwardsMonster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider Colin Edwards made a superb start to his home MotoGP round at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway today.

The popular Texan finished inside the top six in both practice sessions as preparations for round 12 of this year's MotoGP World Championship commenced in hot and humid conditions.

Edwards finished this morning's first 45-minute session in a fantastic third position and he was one of only two non-factory riders to lap inside the top 10. Lap times were some way off last year's pace as the field got to grips with the repaved infield section between turns five and 16.

But with more rubber laid on the track, times tumbled in the second practice and Edwards was able to knock almost two seconds off his best pace. He ended with a fastest time of 1.41.699 to finish sixth on the combined timesheets, the 37-year-old once again leaving a host of factory supported riders trailing in his wake.

Edwards was just over 0.2s behind reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo in fourth and he's confident he can mount a challenge for a top six in Sunday's 28-lap race.

Cal Crutchlow was also able to drastically improve his lap times in the second session, the British rider taking full advantage of the improved grip levels to finish with a best time of 1.43.085. That was 2.3s quicker than his benchmark set this morning as Crutchlow worked on improving the set-up of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team machine, while also trying to learn the technically demanding Indianapolis Motor Speedway track.

Crutchlow finished in 15th position overall but was only 0.7s away from the top 10. The 25-year-old is confident with improved track conditions and further set-up modifications to gain more front-end confidence, he will be able to compete for a top 10 grid position in tomorrow afternoon's qualifying session.

Colin Edwards 6th 1.41.699 ? 39 laps:

?This morning it felt like I was back at the Texas Tornado Boot Camp but just riding a more expensive bike because it was pretty slippery out there. To be honest I actually really enjoyed it even though the grip was a bit sketchy. We all knew that grip was going to be a little bit of an issue this morning but it was 100 per cent dirt track. As soon as you got your knee on the ground the front would go and the rear would come round, but I still had a lot of fun with the bike moving around so much. This afternoon with a lot more rubber down it was a lot better and hats off to the folks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They've done an amazing job because the bumps that have been really bad have mostly gone and with a bit more rubber down the surface is going to offer a lot more grip. We won't feel the benefit of the new tarmac this year but the changes are for the future and next year it is going to be a million times better. Being third this morning and sixth this afternoon has given me a lot of confidence for the rest of the weekend. I'm not fighting the bike this weekend and it feels awesome.?

Cal Crutchlow 15th 1.43.085 ? 39 laps:

?This morning was pretty difficult because the track was very slippery and I was having to contend with not a lot of grip while also trying to push to learn the track. Sometimes I'd run off line and it was so dirty that I was losing a lot of time. The track was in much better condition this afternoon but it felt like I didn't have the front grip I needed to push for a faster time. We had a lot of wear on the tyre and not much grip and I'm not sure why. The issue this year has been losing the front on the brakes, but today I was losing the front mid-corner and off the throttle. I'm sure we can make some big steps with the set-up and I'm confident I can climb a few places up the order and fight for a top 10 in qualifying tomorrow. The good thing is that every single lap we make improvements and I go faster, so if we can get more front-end feeling then I'm looking forward to having a strong race.?

Yamaha Paint the Front Row Red and White at Indianapolis

Yamaha Factory Racing riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo scored the first double Yamaha front row of the year today in qualifying for tomorrow?s Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Local hero Spies continued to impress with the strong form in evidence from the beginning of the weekend. The qualifying session saw him quickly up to impressive speed. Despite repeatedly breaking under the pole time for the first two splits Spies was unable to topple Casey Stoner from the top spot so will start from second place for the race.

Reigning World Champion Lorenzo finally made a breakthrough mid-qualifying after struggling for the first three sessions to find a competitive set up on the newly surfaced Indianapolis track. A big set up change to his YZR-M1 with less than half the session to go changed his fortunes, allowing him to climb quickly up to third behind his team mate with two quick laps in succession. Lorenzo will now use the valuable warm up time tomorrow morning to test the consistency of the set up before the race.

Ben Spies Position : 2nd Time: 1'39.373 Laps: 25

?It was good today, we didn?t have a fast lap in the end but we got on the front row. We did over 30 laps on a set of tyres and went quite quick at the end, still able to do 39s which is good. The last couple of laps we tried our hardest to catch Casey but with five minutes to go I think I ripped my tank spacer off that holds me back on the bike which didn?t help. I wasn?t disappointed as I knew we had a gap to fourth so we?d be on the front row. It wasn?t the perfect session and Casey was just too fast. I think the race will be different; the tyres will be pretty greasy after ten laps but my bike?s working really well on used tyres so we?ll see what happens.?

Jorge Lorenzo Position : 3rd Time: 1'39.629 Laps: 26

?Qualifying was much better than the other three practices so far this weekend. I improved a lot and had a lot more confidence with the front, we changed one bike completely which worked. We are much more confident for tomorrow now. I would like to be closer to Casey, but seven tenths is better than one second and a half. It?s going to be a very tough race for everybody. The front tyre, especially on the left side is graining from the fourth lap so it?s going to be a complicated ride. Let?s see what happens.?

Wilco Zeelenberg Team Manager

?Well I can say one thing, we finally found the right direction to go in which is where we struggled until half way through qualifying. With the bike adjustment we improved a lot, we fitted a qualifying tyre and Jorge pushed for two laps. The bike was stable and we were quite pleased with the result. Ben has been spot on the whole weekend and I think he will be a big contender for the victory for tomorrow. We need to find consistency now and see if we can improve a little bit more for the race.?

Massimo Meregalli Team Director

?The overall result is pretty good today, both riders are on the front row and there is no better way to start the race. Ben?s rhythm is very good so I am positive; we have done a really good job so far. Jorge improved every session and is now up there so I am expecting a really good battle tomorrow.?

QUALIFYING SESSION BELOW EXPECTATIONS FOR THE PRAMAC RACING TEAM AT INDIANAPOLIS
The second day of testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway had started well enough for the Pramac Racing Team thanks to the ninth and thirteenth position respectively obtained during the morning session by Randy De Puniet and Loris Capirossi. But the afternoon qualifying, valid for the starting grid of the Indianapolis Grand Prix which begins tomorrow at 2pm local time, did not see the green and white riders on the same level. The Frenchman, in fact, finished in twelfth place while the Italian in seventeenth. Tomorrow the twenty-minute warm-up should be used at the best to improve their bikes and be able to fight for better positions during the race.

Marco Rigamonti Randy De Puniet Track Engineer

"We thought we could improve a lot more with the soft tires, but unfortunately it did not go well. A shame for Randy that he felt good for all tests but missed the final twist in the final minutes of qualifying. We need to definitely improve the set up of the bike tomorrow morning to make the bike more agile in the long corners."

Randy De Puniet Pramac Racing 12th in 140.815

"The first exit from the pits this afternoon went very well although we had a rear tire with almost twenty laps and after thirty laps I recorded my best lap. Then in the final try, with new tires, we were able to improve by only a few tenths of a second, and this just is not right. I expected more, but we often have difficulties with new tires. I gave everything I had, tomorrow we will have to improve the bike, especially in long-distance curves. Our race pace is good, we aim to enter the top ten!"

Loris Capirossi Pramac Racing
- 17th in 141.092

"I'm disappointed, the team worked very well and the bike was ready. But I was not able to exploit the soft rubber as I should and I was relegated to the rear of the classification. It would take only three tenths less and we were almost in top ten, but this is not enough. We had a good start to the afternoon session but the last few laps we have not just exploited as we should. We hope to redeem in the race tomorrow, even if the shoulder pain is strong and I hope it will not cause me complications in the final part of the race."

Edwards primed for top six challenge in Indianapolis

Colin EdwardsColin Edwards will start his bid for a top six finish in front of his home fans at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway tomorrow from the second row of the grid after he equalled his best qualifying performance of 2011 this afternoon.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider was able to transfer his stunning practice form into the 60-minute qualifying session and he will start tomorrow's 28-lap race from sixth position on the grid.

Throughout the three practice sessions, Edwards was consistently running inside the top six and a fastest lap of 1.40.098 in a sun-drenched qualifying session saw him finish just over 0.1s away from claiming fourth spot on the grid.

With the new infield tarmac offering vastly improved levels of grip with more rubber laid down on the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway today, Edwards was able to lap 1.2s faster than his best time in qualifying for last year's race.

The 37-year-old Texan is now optimistic that he can battle for a third top six result of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship to strengthen his bid to finish the campaign as the leading non-factory rider.

British rider Cal Crutchlow had a frustrating end to an otherwise encouraging qualifying session and he will start the 12th round of this year's World Championship from 11th position on the grid.

The 25-year-old has dedicated the majority of his time this weekend working hard with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team crew to make progress in finding a comfortable front-end setting with his YZR-M1 machine.

His commitment and determination looked like being rewarded with a top 10 place on the grid, but as he pushed to improve his best lap time of 1.40.620, Crutchlow came across Loris Capirossi riding slowly on the racing line at Turn 13 in the final two minutes.

Crutchlow had to quickly take evasive action to avoid a collision with the Ducati rider and he ran into the gravel trap, preventing him from making any further improvement to his lap time.

Despite missing out on his ninth top 10 grid position of the season, Crutchlow is confident he can battle with factory riders Nicky Hayden and Alvaro Bautista in tomorrow's race.

Colin Edwards 6th 1.40.098 ? 26 laps:

?The weekend has been great so far and now I'm really looking forward to the race tomorrow. I haven't been out of the top six in every session and everything has been working fantastic. I feel great on the bike, my Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team have been working tirelessly again to give me a competitive package, and I'm sure a realistic goal is to finish in the top six. That would be a great result and I'm hoping to put on a good show for the Indy crowd tomorrow. The new pavement was a million times better today. Yesterday it was greasy and I was sliding around all over the place, but to finish third in that first practice session gave me a lot of confidence immediately and we have just built on that. Right at the end on one of the soft tyres I knew I had to take a risk on the first lap. Normally I'm not the guy that pushes on the first lap, but I knew here that the soft tyre needed to be hammered right out of the pitlane when it had a lot better grip than the second lap. The bike has felt the best it has for a few races and now I'm excited for the race. I need a good start but I'll be looking to have a good fight with Dovizioso and Simoncelli. In this heat it is going to be a long and tough race, but I'll be giving it my all for the American fans.?

Cal Crutchlow 11th 1.40.620 ? 24 laps:

?I'm pretty disappointed with Loris today. He is the most experienced rider on track and he should no better than anybody that riding slowly at the end of a qualifying session when everybody is going to be pushing hard for a decent grid position isn't the right thing to do. The worst thing was he looked behind twice and saw me coming but he stayed on the racing line when he knew I was on a fast lap. I had to swerve really quick to avoid hitting him and that is disappointing. I'm not saying I was going to jump into the top five, but I'm sure without that I might have qualified inside the top 10. That would have been a good result because I'm struggling with the front-end again. I keep losing the front and it is proving quite difficult at the moment to find an improvement. I'm working really hard, and so are my guys, to find a solution. But we haven't quite made me as comfortable on the bike as I'd like. My pace is still not that bad and I'm sure I can be fighting in a group with Nicky and Alvaro tomorrow. If I can get a good start, I'm hopeful I can stay with them and have a good scrap.?

FALL SPOILS QUALIFYING FOR ROSSI, HAYDEN EIGHTH

After taking a nice step forward in the third free-practice session this morning, a fall during the fourth lap of qualifying affected Valentino Rossi?s performance in Indianapolis. Although the Italian immediately returned to the garage, he could no longer use his first bike or its set of fresh tyres. He?ll have to start from the fifth row of the grid tomorrow.

Nicky Hayden was able to improve his situation by over a second and a half compared to Friday, posting the eighth-best time. He?ll start his home Grand Prix from the third row.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 8th (1:40.244)
?Compared to yesterday, we had wanted to take a step forward in qualifying, but I got a bit confused this morning, and my feedback to the team wasn?t as good as it should have been. This bike is new for us, and we still need more experience with it. Anyway, we still salvaged the third row in the end, which is better than I was. Tyre wear is going to be a big question mark for me. I?m sorry for my fans and the Ducati supporters who want to see us qualifying up front, but we?ll give it our best tomorrow. They say there may be cooler weather, which normally helps us a little bit, so maybe we?ll catch a break.?

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 14th (1:40.975)

?We took a nice step forward this morning that we hoped to confirm in qualifying, and instead I fell right away. We really could have done without that crash, but the front closed right when I touched the brake. From there, the whole session was difficult because the second bike had a slightly different setup. I lost one pair of new tyres and I had to start with a set of used ones. I wasn?t able to get back the feeling from this morning, when the bike felt better and I could push harder. It?s really a shame because we wanted to try to start from the second row again, like at Brno, and instead we?ll have to work hard tomorrow. Anyway, we?ll give our best effort in the race because we weren?t so far off this morning.?

Improved qualifying sees Bautista on the third row

Rizla Suzuki?s ?lvaro Bautista made a determined effort in this afternoon?s qualifying session at Indianapolis to ensure he has a grid position that gives him a chance of a good result for tomorrow?s race.

Bautista will start from the third row after qualifying in ninth place with a best lap?time of 1?40.333 from his 28-laps. He thoroughly tested the Bridgestone race tyres that he had available, to get the best option for Sunday. Bautista is still looking for a bit more durability from his preferred front tyre selection, but believes the team will be able to make a few changes to the set-up of the GSV-R to assist with tyre life in readiness for the race.

Today?s qualifying at the 4,216m Indianapolis Motor Speedway was held in warm and sunny conditions with track temperatures getting up to 51?C. Current championship leader Casey Stoner took pole position, with American Ben Spies in second and reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo making up the front row.

Tomorrow?s 28-lap race is round 12 of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship and the lights will go out to signal the start of the event at 14.00hrs local time (18.00hrs GMT).

?lvaro Bautista:

?The qualifying today was not too bad compared with the last few races, so this is a lot better for us. We tried a long run at the start of the session and the grip from the rear was no problem, but the front did not have enough life in it to make a full race length. This will make things difficult for tomorrow, because we have to try and preserve the front tyre and make sure we have enough durability for 28-laps. We are starting from the third row so the main thing will be to get a good start and stay with the front guys. We will look at today?s data to see if we can use a setting that will give us more life in the tyre and stop it dropping off and sliding around. I am looking forward to tomorrow because we have a better grid position and I will give it full gas and 100% to get a good result.?

Paul Denning ? Team Manager:

?I don?t think ?lvaro or anyone else on the team is particularly excited with ninth on the grid, but the third row gives us a decent chance to go with the fast guys on the early laps and challenge for a good result tomorrow. We?ve done a number of long runs and as much as 35-laps on a race rear tyre - and the rhythm was still pretty good. We now need ?lvaro to race aggressively tomorrow like he has done recently and I think we can hope to have an exciting afternoon.?

Stoner gets seventh pole of the season
Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda RC212V) set the absolute fastest lap by a motorcycle in a very warm qualifying session for Sunday?s Indianapolis Grand Prix at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Yamaha riders Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo filled out the front row with Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) fourth in front of team-mate Andrea Dovizioso.

Qualifying was held in a brilliant, warm sunshine, with Stoner setting the early pace on a track that continued to improve after a recent paving. The riders had been highly critical of the infield, which was repaved, but as more rubber was laid down the track got progressively faster until it yielded a record time. In the morning practice session, the championship leader had raced to the fastest ever time by a motorcycle at ?The Brickyard,? eclipsing the qualifying mark set by Pedrosa in 2009, and he continued his form in qualifying.

Stoner was fastest in every sector and nearly unassailable. Every time Spies would slightly close the gap, Stoner upped the pace. By the end of the hour he had compiled the six fastest laps. His best of 1m, 38.850s came late in the session and cemented his seventh pole position of the season. In the first 12 races, Stoner has only been off the front row once, in Estoril.

Not only was the Australian fastest over one lap, but his Repsol Honda RC212V reached the fastest trap speed of all, 323.5Km/h, over 201mph.

Pedrosa had been on the front row until very late in the hour when Lorenzo edged him out. The difference between the two Spaniards was .318s. Pedrosa isn?t at 100% fitness following an injury-interrupted season, but his physical conditioning shouldn?t play a part in Sunday?s 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship. Pedrosa failed to finish the previous Czech Grand Prix in Brno, but before that he?d been quite strong, winning in Germany and finishing third in the USGP.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) is in the middle of the second row after qualifying only .077s behind Pedrosa. Dovizioso, like many riders, was concerned about tyre wear. The added traction of the new surface caused problems with the front tyre, which many riders were trying to solve through set-up. Dovizioso didn?t believe he was on Stoner?s pace, but was certain he could fight to join him on the podium.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was seventh fastest and on the row three pole. The Italian, who?d earned his first MotoGP podium in the Czech Grand Prix, was fourth fastest in the morning?s free practice. ?Super Sic? was hopeful of improving his pace on race tyres, but discovered a problem with the front tyre when he fitted a new rear. The problem is that the rear grips so well that it pushes the front across the new pavement, causing it to quickly erode. The team will spend the night and the morning warm-up looking for a solution to the front tyre issue.

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was 13th fastest on the hot afternoon. Aoyama felt better than he had on Friday, but not sufficiently better to move farther up the grid. The race could be a surprise, however, as Aoyama?s pace was consistent, which should allow him to move further up the order.

Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP RC212V) finished 15th fastest in the middle of a pack of four riders covered by only .167s. Elias spent the session trying to decide between two very different setups going into Sunday?s race. His hopes of starting closer to the front were thwarted when he ran into a problem with the front end pushing, which made controlling the motorcycle difficult.

MotoGP rider quotes

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Pole position ? 1m 38.850s

?I'm very happy with pole here in Indy, the team have been doing a great job under difficult conditions this weekend, but the race is tomorrow and we will keep working right up until the last moment to try and get the set up right. Obviously without the bumps from previous years the track is performing a lot better, but the lack of consistency in the grip levels are causing issues, everyone is loosing the front and it doesn't give you a lot of confidence, when you hit these patches the bike just seems to drop away from you. We haven't changed too much since FP1, just a few small steps and trying to get the front tyre to work more as with such little grip, we are destroying it. For race distance we're looking pretty good, we did more than race distance on soft front and soft rear and had good stability, we'll wait and see what the conditions are like for tomorrow and decide from there.?

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 4th ? 1m 39.947s

?We had some issues in the session with the front tyre, I didn't feel very comfortable with it and we couldn't get the most from it. I was not going super-fast and I lost the first row, but I'm not worried about the position. We would like to be closer to Casey and Ben - they have been very fast and consistent - so I hope to find something more tomorrow morning in the warm-up to help us fight for the podium. The race will be hard because it's very hot out there, and it will also be a big challenge for the tyres, but I hope we perform better in the race.?

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda: 5th ? 1m 40.024s
?Starting from the second row tomorrow is not too bad. It will be important to have a good start and ride consistently, trying to manage the tyres for the twenty-eight lap race. The rear grip is too strong compared with the front, which causes the front tyre to overheat, this remains the main issue so we need to continue working with the set up to rectify this. During qualifying the ground temperature reached fifty-one degrees, these conditions are really demanding for the tyres. Concerning the pace, I have good rhythm and even though the gap to Casey remains too big for my liking, I think we can fight with Dani and Lorenzo for a podium position, this is our target and we will continue working to improve the machine for the race.?

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 7th ? 1m 40.204s
?Obviously, I was hoping to do better than this because things weren't going too badly or us in the first half of qualifying. I was optimistic because my pace on race tyres was good, but when we put a new rear in to chase a faster lap time the front was completely destroyed within a couple of laps and I couldn't push the bike as I wanted to. Now we will have a look at the data and do some work for the race to and find a solution that will save on front tyre wear. As I said I am still optimistic about my race pace and even though a podium will be difficult and even more so the win, we have a good chance of improving on our starting position.?

Hiroshi Aoyama, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 13th ? 1m 40.925s

?My feeling was a little better today but not enough to make up positions. We start from near the back again and that presents its own problems, but my race pace is not too bad, so I am looking forward to tomorrow.?

Toni Elias, LCR Honda MotoGP: 15th ? 1m 41.030s

?Already from yesterday?s afternoon session and this morning we knew which are going to be our front and rear tyres for the race. It seems we had less issues with front tyre compared with the other riders especially about the wear. In this afternoon session we have tested two different bike setups; one was better in turning and the other one had a better stability, so we have been trying to understand which was the best one for tomorrow. In my last run I had a big issues with the new rear tyre that was pushing too much in the front and I struggled to control the bike. We will work on that in the warm up tomorrow to get a better feeling. At the end I had not taken a painkiller injection as my right feet is improving day by day.?

Spies Strikes Back to Score Home Podium at Indianapolis
Home hero Ben Spies put in a superhuman effort today, coming back from ninth place to take a hard fought podium spot for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Starting from second on the grid the Texan rider was caught up in first a bottle neck of riders in turn one, then came together with Andrea Dovizioso in turn four, dropping him back to ninth as he fought to stay on the bike. Despite the setback Spies went on to deliver one of the star performances of the day, taking an impressive number of overtakes and setting some of the fastest laps of the race. He finally took the chequered flag in third place and stood on the podium to a huge applause from the US crowd. Team mate Jorge Lorenzo?s race was a battle not with his competitors but with the resurfaced Indianapolis track. The reigning World Champion continued to be plagued with a rapidly wearing front tyre causing critical control issues from as early as lap four. Lorenzo battled on regardless, having made a great start he eventually had to relinquish position to team mate Spies and crossed the line in fourth, pushing to stay ahead of Dovizioso to the line. The results of today see Lorenzo?s gap to Casey Stoner in first extended to 44 points with six races remaining. Team mate Spies picks up 16 points, moving up to fifth in the standings, just five points behind Dani Pedrosa in fourth. The team now head across the Atlantic with no break to the Grand Prix of San Marino at Misano next weekend.

Ben Spies
Position 3rd - Time +10.603

?My actual start wasn?t too bad, just a couple of people got into turn one too hot and I got bottled in. I think Dovi came across in front of me in turn four and I was just glad to stay on the bike. I never even saw him. After that happened we just had to pluck away and not get ahead of ourselves. We rode well but just needed to be up there in the first four turns. I rode as fast as I could; it was tough to pass out there as we couldn?t get it done on the straight so we had to figure out some different spots. I was happy to be able to do that and still run good pace at the end.?

Jorge Lorenzo
Position 4th - Time +16.576

?It's a shame; I thought I could reduce my gap with Casey at Indy but since the first practice I have had many problems with the asphalt and the front tyre. I've tried everything with my team to fix it, but we couldn't. After four or five laps the front tyre was destroyed. I saw the other three front riders and their tyres were perfect. I don't know if it was because of the track and I?m not the only one complaining. Now the Championship is much more complicated, but hope is the last thing you can lose. Next weekend we ride again at Misano, I looking forward to forgetting this result."

Wilco Zeelenberg - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Manager
?A disappointing weekend, fourth place I think was the maximum we could get out of it. It was clear that even one lap more might have meant finishing fifth; the front tyre was completely gone, that?s basically the whole story. It was also disappointing that Ben was not able to fight for the win. He did a fantastic sixteen last laps but the first ten were very hard for him after the start. I think he could have fought with Casey. Anyway, third and fourth we have to swallow and we will look to Misano.?

Massimo Meregalli - Yamaha Factory Racing Team Director

?I think the race could have had a different final result, but the start compromised it. Ben made some great passes, I don?t think he could have done better under the circumstances. He did a good job, there?s nothing bad I can say. Jorge unfortunately fought all weekend with tyre management. He still managed to get fourth place and more valuable points for the Championship. Everything is still open and for sure he is a really tough rider and will go to Misano with good expectations.?

Consistent Edwards delivers another top ten in Indianapolis

Colin Edwards extended his impressively consistent run of results in the 2011 MotoGP World Championship this afternoon, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider racing to a hard fought seventh position at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Texan made a fast start from the second row of the grid but as the pack jostled for position in the tight first section of the 2.62 miles track, Edwards was bumped back to eighth.

He was involved in an exciting early battle with factory riders Alvaro Bautista, Ben Spies and Valentino Rossi before the field began to stretch out at the halfway stage of the 28-lap encounter.

With temperatures reaching close to 30 degrees, Edwards was left in a personal duel with Spaniard Bautista until lap 23 when a big front-end slide cost him crucial time. With his front tyre starting to push more and more, Edwards decided to slow down his pace to secure a deserved seventh place, which moves him into eighth place in the World Championship standings ahead of Marco Simoncelli on 84-points.

Cal Crutchlow's reward for a weekend in which he worked tirelessly to improve the front-end feeling with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 machine was his best finish since the Catalunya race in early June.

He maintained a consistent pace throughout the race having led Loris Capirossi, Toni Elias, Randy de Puniet and Hiroshi Aoyama in a frantic opening few laps. And a series of strong laps in the final stages saw him snatch 11th from Marco Simoncelli on the final lap to end his recent run of disappointing results.

Colin Edwards
Position 7th - Time +36.690

?I thought I got a fantastic start but the problem is the Yamaha is lacking a bit of grunt. I needed Fred Flinstone behind giving me a push to go faster, so I had a few people come by me on the run to the first corner. The first few laps I felt I could go faster but with Bautista sitting in front of me, I'd get close and then coming out of the corner he would just grab a few metres on me. In the twisty stuff at the end of the lap I was gaining it all back and at the last corner I almost ran into him. But by the time we got to the first corner he'd pull a few bike lengths on me again. I really wanted to beat Bautista but he started to ride really well in the second half of the race. I was on his back wheel and looking for an opportunity to make an overtake but I lost the front at the end of the back straight and that was a warning just to back off and take seventh. The front tyre lost a fair bit of grip in the last few laps though I wasn't the only one to have a problem. But I was top non-factory rider, I got another top ten and I moved up another place in the Championship, so it wasn't a bad afternoon's work. We go to Misano now and see if we can fight for the top six."

Cal Crutchlow
Position 11th - Time +57.184

?Firstly I want to say a big thanks to all my guys in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. They never gave up all weekend, even when we were struggling a little bit and it might sound silly but I don't think any of us in the garage have ever been so pleased to get an 11th place. After the bad recent run it was important to finish the race and I did that. The result wasn't the best but my speed at the end of the race was really good and I'm happy about that, so there are a lot of positives to take to Misano. At the end of the race I was lapping faster than Jorge Lorenzo. I was a long way behind him but that still gives me a lot of encouragement. Like a lot of people I had a few issues with the front tyre and in the early part of the race it wasn't easy but I never gave up and pushed right to the end. This result at least gives us something to build on for the next races, starting at Misano, which is a track that at least I don't have to learn. I've needed to finish races to gain some experience and I'm glad we did because I learned a lot this afternoon and gave the Team a lot of good feedback to hopefully improve the bike in Misano.?

Herve Poncharal - Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team Manager
"I am very happy with the performance of Colin and Cal today and I think both of them got the best result we could have hoped for. Colin rode full of determination and I think at some stage he could have passed Bautista, but it was difficult. It was very wise from Colin not to push anymore with five laps to go as he had a big lead over the riders behind. This puts him in eighth position in the Championship standings and he passed Marco Simoncelli, who is one of the fastest riders in MotoGP. He deserved to have a strong race in front of his home crowd and he has been pushing all weekend and I want to thank him for that. Cal was a lot better than in previous races and he did a good, solid job. At the beginning he struggled but he got a lot better throughout the race lap and at the end he was faster than the group in front of him. That race was just what he needed after the bad period to clear of his mind a little bit. I believe he had a great race and that will put him back on the track. We go to Misano now where he knows the track and that will be another positive. Today he has learnt a lot and he was faster at the end of the race than at the beginning and this experience helps him prepare for next year.?

DE PUNIET OBTAINES THE BEST RESULT OF THE YEAR WITH THE EIGHTH PLACE IN INDIANAPOLIS. CAPIROSSI FORCED TO RETIRE

Great comeback of the French rider today on the Indianapolis circuit. After not the best start, De Puniet was in the back of the classification after the first lap, he fought back and manage to move up until the last corner. Very exciting comeback for De Puniet who after having overtaken his team-mate, he overtook Crutchlow, Aoyama, Elias, Hayden, Rossi and Barbera finishing in eighth place. A promising race that give good hopes for the rest of the season. Capirossi, meanwhile, found unexpected problems and had to retire after the sixteenth lap because of the damages on the front tyre. Still not a lot of luck for the Italian rider who will look for revenge in seven days on the home track of Misano Adriatico.

Marco Rigamonti Randy De Puniet Track Engineer

"We are very happy with how today went with Randy: finally after a difficult season he was able to show his talent. We saw a good battle throughout the 28 laps. During the race, some riders had tire problems and honestly we had some fear, but our set-up and Randys riding style kept us fairly constant until the end of the race. Too bad he lost several positions at the beginning for a hit in the group, or Randy would have conquer at least a couple of more positions."

Randy De Puniet Pramac Racing 8th in race 17th in championship

"I'm happy, this is my best race of the season! Bad start for the race when Loris touched me and I lost at least three positions, otherwise I could stay with the group and probably I could have fought for better positions. But its ok, our pace, as I declared yesterday, has been steady and good until the end and this allowed me to overtake many riders in the second half of the race. I'm satisfied with how things went today, the team has worked very well and after a difficult start of the season we all deserve a good result. We needed it and I look forward to continue at this level also next week at Misano."

Loris Capirossi Pramac Racing
- DNF 16th in championship

"Since the fourth lap the bike did not respond as I wanted. I always lost the front tire and risked falling at every turn. At one point I could no longer manage the bike and I was forced to retire. Just returned to the box we noticed that the front tire was very worn. I'm so sorry that this happened in the race because during the whole weekend we have never had problems like that. Not much to add, we look ahead and concentrate on Misano where we hope to get a good result in front of our fans."

Stoner and Pedrosa dominate at 'The Brickyard'
Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner continued his march to the 2011 MotoGP World Championship with a dominant victory over team-mate Dani Pedrosa in the Indianapolis Grand Prix at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Joining the Honda riders on the podium was Yamaha rider Ben Spies.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda RC212V) recorded his fastest lap on the final tour of ?The Brickyard? to close in on fourth place finisher Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) before finishing a close fifth.

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) scored his ninth top ten finish of the season by coming ninth, three places ahead of his team-mate. Tyre problems claimed Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V), an early podium contender who slipped down to 12th in the final laps.

Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP) finished 13th.

The 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship culminated a fractious weekend during which the recently repaved infield was heavily criticised by the riders. Stoner was among the most critical of the track. Following his seventh pole position of the year, in which he set the fastest ever lap by a motorcycle at ?The Brickyard,? the championship leader said he never felt confident. If he wasn?t confident in the race it didn?t show.

Storming to the front of the field from the pole position, Stoner led briefly before Pedrosa swept past with Lorenzo also going with him, putting Stoner down in third just a handful of turns into the race. Pedrosa was first across the ?Yard of Bricks? that marks the finish line for the first of 28 laps, Lorenzo and Stoner following, then Nicky Hayden (Ducati), Simoncelli and Dovizioso.

Stoner used the superior power of the Repsol Honda RC212V to pass Lorenzo entering the first turn on the third lap, setting his sights on Pedrosa. The pass for the lead came on the seventh lap down the front straight and again into turn one, where most of the passing took place.

With Pedrosa behind him, Stoner set yet another new circuit record lap of 1m, 39.81s which put him half a second up on Pedrosa. Stoner took another four-tenths out of Pedrosa on the eighth lap to put him nearly a second up. To the end of the race Stoner was never challenged and rode to victory by 4.828s.

The victory was important for Stoner in a number of ways. It was his seventh victory of the year and third in a row. It was also his fourth win from pole and tenth podium in a row, a new career best. The podium was his first at IMS, the only rostrum on the MotoGP calendar which he?d never ascended.

With Lorenzo finishing fourth, Stoner grew his championship points lead to 44 points, 243 to 199, after 12 of 18 races.

Pedrosa was never in danger of losing second on the podium. Spies, once he made his way to third, briefly cut into his comfort zone, but Pedrosa shrugged off the challenge to beat him by 5.775s.

Behind Spies came Lorenzo, then Dovizioso, whose final two laps were his fastest. The late burst of speed carried him to within .626s of Lorenzo. Another lap and he might have been fourth.

Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V) was involved in a spirited battle for eighth that was decided in the final corner. Hector Barbera (Ducati) made a run at the Japanese rider, only to overshoot the corner and crash, handing Aoyama a secure ninth.

Simoncelli was one of many riders to suffer tyre degradation. The tall, bushy-haired Italian challenged at the front from the start, and was in fourth as late as the 11th lap, but as the race progressed he found traction increasingly compromised. Simoncelli hung on as long as he could, but eventually dropped down to 12th, one spot up on Toni Elias (LCR Honda MotoGP), the 13th place finisher.

Elias had a problem with rear wheel-spin the whole race which prevented him from sustaining his corner entry speed. He was a few tenths slower than what he?d hoped, which took him out of the battle just ahead.

The MotoGP paddock now heads quickly back to Europe for next Sunday?s San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, Italy on September 4.

MotoGP rider quotes

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: Race winner

?We got an OK start and I should have been a little more aggressive in the first corner. As I entered turn two Dani hit the brakes quite hard and I just had nothing, my brakes weren't warmed up yet and I had trouble stopping, I was lucky to get through the first lap. The race was tough, conditions were very hot and the track surface a little more slippery than practice and qualifying which made things difficult to know how much to push. At one point I closed the front and dropped the bike on my knee, I was pretty much down but managed to pick it back up and not lose too much confidence. From there we started to make our way past Dani, put in a few good lap times and pull an advantage. Under challenging track conditions everything has worked really well this weekend, the crew did a fantastic job and gave me a great bike so a huge thanks to them all.

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 2nd

"We are very happy with second place today for several reasons. After yesterday's qualifying session, we had to work hard to reduce the one second gap we had from Casey, it wasn't normal to be so far away from him. To finish second after the crash in Brno is a great feeling. I knew that my race pace wouldn't be as fast as Casey's, but the team did a very good job, helped me to feel more comfortable with the front and I was able to find a good rhythm, just 3-4 tenths slower than Casey. It was a tough race being alone, but I focused on my lap times and I made my best lap at the end, so I'm happy with my performance and the bike. To get 20 points is not so bad after the crash in Brno and I look forward to going to Misano next week to try and take another step forward."

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda: 5th
"I can't be happy with today's result because our target was the podium and gaining some points on Lorenzo, but we also have to look at the positives and I'm pleased I managed a 140.1 lap time, my fastest of the race on my final lap. Considering the demanding conditions of this track and the hot temperatures, this lap time shows that we were fast even at the end. We had a bad start, Nicky (Hayden) blocked me and then Ben (Spies) and I touched in turn four and I lost valuable time and positions. From that moment I tried to remain focused and lap by lap I found the pace that allowed me to recover positions. We knew that the race would be tough and it really was. It was also a strange race, from the beginning we had no rear grip and especially in the first laps I had the feeling that the front was closing a lot. However, I was able to change my mentality and adapt my riding style to the conditions in order to manage the tyres in the best way and ride consistently. We are competitive and we go to Misano, my home GP very determined and confident of a good result."

Hiroshi Aoyama, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 9th
?I am happy but not altogether satisfied with this result. The way the tyres worked and also my physical conditions in this intense heat were plus points for us and we went much better in the race than we had managed in practice, but maybe with a better start I could have been fighting further up the field. Overall it has been a positive weekend and gives us a boost for the next races.?

Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini: 12th

?Unfortunately today my race only really lasted five laps, during which time I had a lot of fun ? it's just a shame about the other 23! We have had this problem all weekend and even though we thought we had improved the situation this morning it was only because the track temperatures were lower. In the afternoon heat the problem came back after just five laps and even though I was able to keep it consistent for the next six or seven laps I could do nothing to prevent the decline in performance after that. It was a real mission just to make it to the end ? I was putting myself on the line just ride slowly. Now we need to look into exactly what caused this problem.?

Toni Elias, LCR Honda MotoGP: 13th
?Well... it seems we had a big issue about the rear spinning for the whole race... a bit more than everybody and I could not keep the corner speed in the entry of the curves. For all these reasons my pace was a few tenths slower than what we expected and I could not stay in the good group. I have tried to follow Aoyama first and then Rossi and Crutchlow, but they were faster than me. We need to find those few tenths to race for the top ten and this is our main target for the next week end in Misano.?
