Grabby Clutch unable to engage neutral when hot
Read a thread relating to this but was advised to post a new thread.

Nice to see the ALL BIRDS have a clunky 1st gear.....
Problem I have when hot i can't disengage / get neutral. I have to stop the engine. Got told to bleed the system and recently replaced the master cylinder as it would not bleed no matter what i did (plunger seals had warped and replacement cylinder cheaper than seal kit) Not much better after and a right bugger to bleed. Ex bike techy suggested sucking the fluid in from the bleed nipple which works a bit better if not very nice to taste..

Clutch is better but still grabby especially when hot. Same bike techy suggests the basket is notched . Tried stripping clutch housing today but the cover will not give ... despite gentle persuasion , rubber face hammer etc.
Suggestions from all most welcome . especially safe cover removal...

I refit the bolts and went for another check of the Slave Cylinder.
Cylinder and Actuator Rod were caked in crap and prob think cylinder is passing. Not 100% sure. but 1st try in engaged a treat. run her round the block and bingo back to square 1 and worse than what i started.

All advice welcome .... :dunno:
P.s only see my ex bike techy once in blue moon.... lol

Bugger, just responded on the other thread - check the basics before delving deeper I.e. Fluid level. It only needs to be a fraction low and it will cause difficulty in engaging a gear at standstill.

If it is an ex plod bike it will have quite probably had a new clutch fitted at some time.. Or at least friction plates.
I would be inclined ( for the cost of a gasket an 40 minutes work ) to take the cover off remove all the plates, keeping them in order, and lay them all on a bit of plate glass to make sure they are flat.. Do both friction and steel plates

Thanke for replies . Was going to try the stripdown yesterday Jaws but couldnt get the cover off. Any tips on to do that successfully without damaging ....
as it was I ended up stripping slave .think its passing as had fluid in the chamber.

Just undo all the bolts round the outside ( do not bother with the middle one as it is just an acoustic chamber ) and clout repeatedly with plastic mallet !

Tried that lots of times . Even a tire iron up against the protrusions near the filler cap that didnt budge it. and there doesnt look like there anywhere to push against. ?

noobie

Clueless in most things
Not on a bird but I have in the past when splitting two pieces of metal used a wooden door stop, the type where it is thin at one end and fat at the other, a wedge.

put the wedge thin end on the join then hammer away at the fat end.

Just a thought.. are you using a rubber mallet or a plastic one ?
Rubber mallet = no chance !
