Front Sprocket

noobie

Clueless in most things
When I pull away then is almost a clonk that the best way I can describe it is, it's almost like the bike is taking up the slack before being solid so the drive forward can start, it's not a big one but an annoying one.

I've checked the chain adjustment, cush drives, all okay, the rear sprocket is okay so that only leaves the front. I saw a you tube video today that showed some after market kits have the front sprocket teeth too small so causes excess play and the "take up" I mentioned so that is the area I will look at next.

The chain and sprockets are d.i.d, I use a scottoiler and the chain has at least two clicks left on the chain adjustment guide. It was last replaced in 2010 at 24,450 miles and the mileage now is 48,845

Is it possible that a front sprocket will need replacing before the chain and rear sprocket do ? The slack then clonk is annoying.

If the chain and sprockets have done 25000 miles I would replace them anyway, Noobs. Ever had a rear wheel lock up because the chain wrapped round rather than dropped off when it broke. I spent nearly two months in hospital when it happened to me.

In my recent experience D.I.D are shit, or I was fobbed off with a cheap copy, Either way neither D.I.D or the official importer or the supplier were any help at all, there is a thread about it here somewhere I think, needless to say I wont be buying their products again

Now I have that's off my chest :-0)
Through a few years experience in the trade & having seen numerous problems caused by chains/sprockets I advise changing both front & rear along with the chain as a set @tu*

Yes.. Please be aware that for the past several years there have been LOADS of DID copies around.
Even a certain very well known parts supplier from the west of the UK fell foul and inadvertently bought a load of them.. ( But, to be fair, as soon as they found out they did send what remained to the scrap man )

There is no such thing as a cheap DID chain.
If you see one advertised either it is bankrupt stock or a fake.. But even bankrupt stock of DID kit makes proper money usually..

Just to add a little bit of info I gleaned from the net which seems to have been confirmed by the attitude of the importer/supplier, D.I.D started getting chains made under licence in Taiwan a few years ago which is when the problems began to arise

Whether the quality has gone down or copies are also being made there I couldn't say but be wary, I paid full price for a supposed Genuine chain from a well known major shop & it really was shit, it turned out the shop buys from a supplier that isn't the official importer & who buys worldwide so tracing it back to source was impossible

I can recommend JT chains & sprockets mine have done a few thousand hard miles now with no signs of wear at all after the initial bedding in @tu*

Funny enough. I've just received a set from Karen at Jaws motorcycles and the both sprockets are Jt. The front one says made in Japan as does the d.i.d chain The rear sprocket says Thailand :-0)
