Fan not workng

2001 EFI the rad boiled over today and spat water out of the over flow pipe. Susequent investigation has shown that the fan does not kick in at all. Further testing has shown that the fan works when seperated from the loom and seperate power is applied.

The fan control relay appears to work after following the haynes manual test procedures. I can hear it click when I reconnect it (ignition on)
Looking at the wiring diagram am I correct in expecting to see 12v on one side of the fuse box with the fuse removed. I have a new ignition switch fitted (JAWS MC).
Any other help or ideas would be appreciated.

Are you sure it is not simply the fan physically not being able to turn - there isn't a lot of room in there and probably wouldn't take much to stop it. Can you spin it manually with the motor off?

I dont recall ever hearing of the sender unit in the radiator failing so it is not likely to be that. It is such a simple contraption there really isn't anything to go wrong.

Sadly FIs overheating on very hot days like today was not unheard of when I owned one; too much low speed stuff and it would get very hot, sometimes to the point where in felt it necessary to switch it off to let it cool down a bit; absolutely fine when moving. Are you sure the fan isn't kicking in - it is so feeble in my opinion it doesn't really make much of a difference on hot days. If you see what I mean.

Fan not working

Have you carried out the loom fix yet ? One of the ground wires the loom fix joins goes direct to the cooling fan motor, since the motor consumes a lot of current if the connection isn't good the motor will not run properly or at all.

The fan turns freely on the radiator,I did get the temp up to 120 and the fan did not kick in (static test). I also tested it off the bike and it turns very fast when a voltage is applied to it. I will recheck the loom fix just to make sure.

Should be easy enough to bridge to earth from the multiplug Or the fan cable to test the earth?

I have continuity checked all the wires to the ECU, to earth, to the fuse box and to the ignition switch loom connector and everything checks out ok.

I did a further search on here http://www.bikersoracle.com/blackbird/forum/showthread.php?t=72820&highlight=Chinese+ignition And found a post about a similar problem and the resolution was to replace the "chinese" ignition switch with the original and the problem was solved. Unfortunately i cannot do this as my original switch fell apart. So I am going to look for one on ebay and see if this clears it.

With a bit of jiggery pokery you could bypass the ignition switch temporarily if you are in a hurry, probably easiest to fit a manual switch if you go down this route.

Sorted

Bit the bullet and bought a honda lock set from DS on monday arrived next day. Before i put it on i checked the ignition switch to see what was different. The Honda switch connects three wires together allowing power to go to one side of the fan fuse as well as elsewhere. The Chinese one connects two contacts together the other two are open circuit.

Connected everything up and fan turns on when it gets to the correct temp. @tu*

I can only reiterate do not buy chinese ignition switches.

That is exactly what I found with the Chinese one I bought. Another fault I found with it was that when I got it installed the leads weren't long enough to reach the connecting plugs , so I cut and soldered the original leads to the new ones. Then, when the switch didn't work I had to repeat the operation in reverse!!!! :bang::bang::bang:
