My great, great, great uncle Chris was one of the last British officers to be Drummed Out of the Army in India, full parade, buttons cut off his uniform, sword broken over the CO's knee, the full works.

He got caught shagging the Colonels missus!!

When Unc returned to the UK, the colonels missus came back with him............when the colonel finally left the Army a few years later, he moved in with them too...................cosy.

And if we go further back, there is a character called Juan Jewello (John Jewell- the Jewell name has carried on ever since as a middle name in the family), he was Bishop of Salisbury - and is indeed buried in one of the side aisles - a lecturer at london university at age 14, he was an advisor to QE1 for a while, but pissed her off somehow and was exiled to Battenburg - no not the cake - returning several years later having been pardoned, there is a picture of him in the national gallery, although not on display.

Sort of in between the two, there was the Whiteacre family who built a forge in Walton le Dale and made a fortune, we still own a lot of land and houses over there, all on peppercorn rents "in perpetuitity" so worth sod all, but its nice to own a bit of england, even thgough its on the wrong side of the penines.

There is a Whiteacre (now Whittaker) family grave in the Churchyard at Walton.

Well you did ask.........

Oh and I just remembered another claim to fame.. Around the time the About the mid 1920's, a great uncle of mine by the name of Cleversley was found guilty of murder.
He was a merchantman and has disembarked from a boat in Liverpool docks with all his wages.

A bloke tried to mug him and he ended up being stabbed and dying.

It was, apparently, a common problem and known by the judges of the time..
He was banged up and told he would be done for murder. He should plead guilty and he would be handed down a 1 month sentence.. ( back then law was easier cos there was not so many of them ! )
But he said he would not plead guilty cos he was only defending him self.

They tried all sorts to persuade him to just accept it but in the end and because he would not accede, the chucked him in a loony bin !!
He was finally released in 1965, but he was completely institionalised by then and they ended up allowing him to stay in the place until he died in his 80's.

Now my nan ( as it was her cousin ) kept some of the documents about the trial and stuff, but try as I might, I have never been able to find any other mention of the incident anywhere... To be honest, as almost all the family on that side are now away with the angels, I am not even 100% sure about the spelling of Cleversley .. it could have been Cleversly or some other derivative..

Rickenberg's...

Orginally from Hanover, Germany, my forefathers move to England circa 1865... My great, great grandfather & mother were tailors (and seamstresses) and most likely owned a small shop in Stepney (in Whitechapel?) I have the scanned documents of the 1861 census, but can't read the writing coz it's quite difficult to read...

In the 2nd World War, my grandfather was in the Royal Engineers, stationed in India and did some work in Burma, but had to flee back to England with the onset of the Japanese invasion at the time...

Once the war had ended, my grandfather was invited back by the newly formed government of Pakistan (after they gained independence) to be the head of the military Pakistani Engineering Corps. (You see, the Pakistani government didn't have a clue as to how to start their army, so they invited retiring British officers etc. to help them).

With my grandfather's help, the new Pakistani Engineering corps built the first major highways through the country etc.. In honor of my grandfathers help, the Pakistani government named a major highway "The Rickenberg Highway", but I suspect that name is no longer used.... It would be interesting to find out more...

That's my little claim to fame (in a very round about way)!
