Job Done

Hopefully all is OK now. Replaced her stator coils, regulator/rectifier and battery. Getting good readings off the altenator now. Old stator coils looked a bit manky with the outer insulation coming off in places. As Jaws said, worst bit was getting the old gasket off the alternator cover. Thanks for all your advice.

Not looking to tour on her until I get confidence back in her so I removed the Givi wingrack. I had forgotten what a good rear end she's got.

Great news.....and well done for DIY........... But....

1 it's an 'it' not a 'her':bang:
2 seriously consider replacing the battery - Halfords usually have them in stock
3 if you are touring it might be worth investing in a spare Reg/rec to keep in the tank bag for when sorry if it packs up........ Or even better, stick a new one on and keep the current one as back up

Looks like number 2 and number 3 have been done....

Well done, fairb.

Clear signs of overheating in the alternator coils so they have obviously been asked to provide more power than design over a long period. Usually as a result of a knackered battery aided by corroded wiring and poor joints. IMHO. If the reg/rec looks OK physically I would keep it as a possible spare for the future. It would be worth finishing off the job properly by taking the output from the reg/rec directly to the battery via an in-line fuse and bypassing the existing wiring which will have become corroded by now and will be giving an unwanted load. This will ease the strain on your new alternator and help prevent future failure. :-0)

Is that a custom alternator cover or artistic licence with your camera 8rfl@

Clueless in most things
I think that one is called the flan cover often found on gay pink ones :-0)

I agree that it's a loop thing. If your alternator is fubarred it makes sense if you can afford it and haven't already to replace the three as one. battery, alt and reg/rec

Also good advice from bill in that often one of the things we largely ignore and overlook, are the conditions of the connections as we do on most bikes not just birds.

Yes, you guessed it, it's one of the wife's old flan dishes. I use all sorts of old dishes to put the nuts, bolts, etc. in as I take things apart.

Point to note is that one of the lower bolts on the rear sub frame must have vibrated off as it was missing. Also took the opportunity to re-visit the loom fix as the self-amalgamating tape I had used was looking worse for wear.

Good thought Centaur, the old regulator/rectifier seems OK so I'll take that along with me. On mine it's got the long loom that needs to threaded under the battery compartment which was a bit of a pain. They sent me the wrong one for a card'd bike first which had a short loom and looked a lot easier to fit. If the rectifier breaks while I'm out then I'll just lash it up to get me home.

As they say in French, "la moto est bonne". You see the French think a bike is a she and I agree. (Oh dear, I bit.)

Can I just point out it was me who suggested taking the old Reg/rec as a spare not Centaur.

I don't know why I bother.:dunno:

;-0))

Re the routing of the Reg/rec cable -'on both my Birds I simply rerouted it to run under the seat - keeps the cables out of the weather and also makes it much easier to change the next time it packs up8rfl@
