Thats the good bit. When I start up outlook express and tell it to send and receive I get the following error message: The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Have tried allsorts to sort it but it just aint happening. Anybody got any ideas or know what it means????

I'm not a techie, but my laptop gave me a similar error. Apparently on mine it was to do with the Norton Anit Spam Virus Protection thingy!!!!!!! I have been told to ditch that and get something else instead to solve the problem!! The error did go away after a while, but has just come back (cos my techy mate hasn't had time to change the protection program thing yet!!) :bang: :bang: Is that totally useless info!!????!!c7u8

Martin, I think that means that your server may be down for upgrading... We had that a couple of weeks ago, and thet was the reason.Ask DK, he had alsorts of problems with it..... That was on Blueyonder... Now it seems that ntl are doing theirs..

Hope that helps... If It is a wrong diagnosis, sorry... no doubt another of the techies will sort it...
Best wishes,

Dave

The Pipex people said I had to take the Norton off the system completely and reinstall! Hence the reason I haven't done it! Too complicated for me! :bang: Oil and filter change on the bike, no issues, puters - not a hope!!!! But, He definitely said uninstall and reinstall - I got the impression disabling wasn't enough? Something to do with updates making the programme incompatible with the computer - sound daft to me, but hey ho!!!! c7u8

Any use?!!!

Had a similar problem on my outlook which I use for business contacts. Removed McAfee anti spam, now it works great again.

Well I wouldn't

:neenaw: Well I wouldn't remove ANY of my antivirus software on the say so of an Internet Service Provider (no)Helpline dork!! l4m3r

At the end of the day, McAfee, Norton, CA, and all the other are there for a reason - to stop spam, viruses, trojan horses and all the other shit that is out there. c7u8

As an example, I recently built a new machine for a mate. Completely new. I dropped it round to him and set up his broadband connection. My parting words were basically make sure you install and UPDATE your Norton before you do ANY surfing. d34l

About an hour later, I had a phone call from him saying that it kept on re-booting and doing other weird stuff. Have you been surfing I said. Yes he said. Before or after installing Norton? Before, "But I've only been on Barclays Online Banking".... Sounds like a virus, sez me...

Installed Norton, updated it with the latest virus definitions (VERY important), and Hey Presto!! 13 viruses found and destroyed. PC now all better.

The point is, it took about 10 minutes on a REPUTABLE site to get riddled with viruses, so LEAVE THE PROTECTION IN PLACE !!! s04pb0x6

Looks like your accounts settings aren't right

Check SMTP Authentication is checked/unchecked - then try again?

You'll find it in "Other Settings"

As far as I'm aware ntl mail servers are all OK today

No email

I get the odd message like that now and again, looks like both of us on the NTL server.
I get round it by switching off the AVG email scanner for that download only, switch it back on and everything is OK for a week or two, then same message pops up.

Martin if you go to the home page of your server then look for webmail, if you click on that you should be able to access your emails.

Dump the piss poor, spam generating, virus propogating Outlook and install a proper mail chucker like BlueWave or better still Turnpike ( available from Demon.com )

Proper job :p !

Well fook me, it fookin works. Not sure what I did but we now have mail. Thanks for all the help chaps.

Now problem 2. Our main machine went bang yesterday (hence the need for the lappy) It was very old and had just been added too time and again. Now I have a new base unit (its 4 years old) but used very little. It has WIN98 on it. How do I go about putting xp on to it. Do I have to buy the whole software of is there some sort of upgrade disk???? Or am I talking shite and I should just buy a new machine full stop :dunno:

Ta very much l4m3r
