Carrying Things

Personally I don't carry anything in my pockets whilst riding.

Metallic objects can shatter bone and even coins can burn you with friction when you are sliding up the road. Anything else has a nasty habit of impailing you - pens - keys - tools - screwdrivers etc, etc.

Same goes for rucksacks - fine if what you are carrying is soft but would you really want to land on that lock you are carrying?

The simple rule is to ask yourself "would I like to land on that object at 10/20/30/40/50/60/70/whatever mph?"

Thought not....

Where

do you put all your stuff then Bob? And what do you carry? Could this be a new thread? How much and what do members carry, excluding luggage? :dunno:

Good point

A mate of mine just nipped out to the Asda to stock up with cans of cat food, put all the cans in his rucksack, on his way back a car pull out on him from a parked position he swiped the side of the car & end up landing on his back, resulting in bad back injuries with which he would of not received had not been for the cans.

Timely reminder Bob

A mate of mine always carried a garage door opener in the front top pocket of his riding jacket. A couple of years ago, a car cut across his path, he went over the roof and landed on the opener which had turned enough to punch its way between 2 ribs and cause bleeding into a lung. He's never carried anything since then and neither have I save for a wallet!

Cheers

Used to use a Tankbag (Baglux) for lugging my wallet around until I offed and landed on it cracking three ribs. Change of attitude towards hard luggage after that and I bought myself a Givi Topbox.

One of the coppers on Saturday said the same as Bob in so much as he NEVER has anything in his pockets, he will not even wear his belt with the Gas/Cuffs/stick etc when riding, in fact he is trying to get all the others to follow his lead. Simpley for the very same reasons that Bob said

Me? Wallet, glasses, helmet bag, keys, puncture outfit, phone  :t

NOTHING

All my bits 'n' bobs go in the tank bag which is always in place however short/long the journey. The tank bag is like a mini airbag in the fact that it cushions any impact prior to squashing the tank if the unfortunate shoud occurr.
BOB, the idea is fine in theory but how often do people come off and NOT hit anything else ie, parked car, armco, lamp post, kerb or other street furniture.
Not been off yet so i cannot offer and personal feedback however when my brother threw his Duke up the road he crashed through a dry stone wall and broke his pelvis, collar bone and pride,,, he never mentioned the fact he had ?2.50 in change and his house keys in his pocket :dunno:

Nearly a valid comment

Personally, and only IMHO, its not a theory its a fact.
Fine if you want to carry whatever in your pocket and even a lock and chain around your neck - do whatever you like.
BUT you ARE increasing the risk of injuring yourself if you fall off.

As for hitting road furniture well thats possible as well because if you are going to fall off then its very likely you will come into contact with whatever is around you but this is vearing away from the original topic.

Each off is unique - all you can do is minimise the risk of hurting yourself.

The keys and change obviously didn't come into play on this occassion as the injuries and other events would have been something of a distraction surely?
Maybe luck even played a hand - who knows?

BOB

Quite right, lady luck on his side yet again.. The bike was an old classic 860GTS Ducati in concours condition, the only part salvaged really was the motor. No road sense what so ever,,,none at all..
I'm still interested in a day course with you in spring so watch out.

All the hard bits go in the bottom of the tailpack for me and the soft bits in the rucksack.

Maybe the bike clothing manufacturers should do something about the number of pockets in jackets etc, in my SPADA I have 6 pockets plus a dedicated mobile phone pocket, and the Thermal waterproof trousers have 3 large pockets, to my mind they are encouraging us to carry more on ourselves, plus with the advent of underseat exhausts, weight saving on bikes there is bugger all storage space on a bike now.

Have to agree a tankbag/tailpack is the most sensible way to go.

Tankbag

Always take my tankbag, all the stuff goes in it, pockets in the leathers are only for aircon on hot days !

I find a tankbag comfy! On a cold day you can snuggle up to it and on the motorway I can rest my head on it :}

Read about a guy in the states who was carrying a gallon of gas in his backpak (not enough gas stations around I spose?) he had an off in a very isolated spot and was found a day or so later gassed!

He had only been knocked out during the off but he ended up lying head down on an embankment, the gas leaked , ran down his back into the helmet. Petrol and ploystyrene in the lid reacted to make something nasty like Napalm and the fumes gassed him

good looking AND modest
I must admit that untill recently I carried all kinds of junk in my pockets, now however it all goes in the tank bag, and Im with coddy on the "too many pockets" idea, as when Im off the bike I put my keys into "a" pocket, and can never remember which pocket I put em in:bang: as thers so many of em, Ive tried the "bit of rope" around the neck for the keys, but cant get "comfortable" having a "noose" on all the time,!!

Fookin cats again... cull the feckers I say.

I carry most things like spare gloves, visor, camera, wallet, keys, lock etc in my tank bag. Tool kit, puncture repairkit, pump and first aid kit goes under the seat. The Ace has plenty of space under the pillion seat and in the side plastics but why dont manufacturers utilise these areas for better storage? With a few mods to the underside of the solo seat cowl I could easily carry a set of waterproofs, butties and a flask!!!
