travelling back from Masham in the box with two pregnant mares, just south of Wetherby a landrover in the middle lane ran over a long metal bar throwing it right in my path, massive hole in sump & oil pipe cut in two, highway patrol were brilliant as were equine recovery & vehicle recovery, just hope insurance cover repairs

Unlucky.

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse - wouldn't fancy that coming through the windscreen.

Not looking good, they can't guarantee that the engine will be ok once the sump & relevant parts are replaced so looking like a write off which means we won't get what it's worth, better go salvage some bits.

Can't the engine be swapped?

Bloody hell Derek, if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any!!!
Looks like turning out ok though, as Andy said earlier it would have been a different story had it gone through the window or burst a tyre.
We escaped unscathed & horses are fine, that's a good result in my book.

There is a sort of pleasing irony - a horseless carriage carrying horses breaks down, another horseless carriage turns up to rescue the horses.

Can't help thinking if the internal combustion engine had never been invented the horses would have been pulling the horse box in the first place. Except as the horses wouldn't have needed to be carted there would have not been a horse box.
