If your lever is coming right back, two things possibly wrong...

1 - your pads are almost down to the limit, (but see below)
2- you havent bled them properly.

Make sure you use DOT4 fluid and dont mix brands as they are not comptable.

Your lever should be firm no matter what state your pads are in as the reserviour fills up the pistons which are allowed to come out due to the wear of the pads.

Follow the bleed section in the Honda manual and if its done in the right sequence you should have no problem.

I have the same problem on the Pan - it is always air up by the master cylinder. Crack the banjo and get all the air out of it and then re-bleed. Also take off the covers on the master cylinder and tap the brake lever very quickly and softly - you should see lots of very small bubbles coming up into the brake fluid. That will tell you that the air is at the top end. Hope this helps.

no disrespect but i know how to bleed brakes, i have ben working on all my own bikes for the last 22 years + other peoples, and all the cars i have had as well. A garage is where i put petrol in.

there is no air in them, they do not pump up it, they have new pads in,

am gonna go for a full fluid change in the week and see what that brings, if it is the same afterwards then it is the hoses.

Bungee

Wolfie, I seem to remember a thread where it was recommended that if you use a bungee to keep the brake on overnight this will clear any residual air from the system. Worth a try!

I can recall hearing people using a cable tie on the old Pan to keep the brakes from going spongy. You put it on overnight. Can't remember why though...

That's exactly what i do with my Bird; I also suspend a weight on the rear brake pedal to compress the rear... I think the idea is that compressing the brakes squeezes the air out, which rises into the reserviors... Seems to work...

I had that recommended once before and found it to work very well but the problem was recurring so was then informed that air must me getting in somewhere, most likely the master cylinder ?
