brake spongy/soft pedal etc.

sometime member on here has the above, has bleed the brakes 3- 4 times now.

if he applies the front lever and then the back pedal all is well but if he lets go of the front lever the back pedal then drops and becomes soft, a quick pump on the pedal brings the pedal back to hard again.

cant see any leaks he says, bleed brakes by the long pipe method he says. instead of the way it should be done, so has been told to do it the right way, or just delink them.

any ideas?

cause to be honest i am feckin bored of hearing about it each day, and have already told him to take it jaws, but he lives too far away, sell the bike and sell his tools cause he is too stupid to own them.

I believe it s a very common problem when the weight of the rider exceeds the weight of the machine.

Only real solution is to sell it, and buy a Pan, a Gold Wing or a Hardly Moving.

Has he got braided lines?

If not then the pipe maybe expanding when applying pressure.

If the rear brake goes down when lifting off the the front, it could be the brake/link compensator out of adjustment.

Hi Wolfie

When I had this problem it seemed to be the Secondary Master Cylinder (SMC) on the left fork leg that was causing it.

It was solved by repeatedly bleeding following the bleeding procedure in the Haynes manual, with particular attention on the SMC bit

Make sure you do the step where you push up on the SMC (I lie down alongside the front wheel and push up, I get better leverage that way!) whilst someone undoes the bleed nipple on the rear caliper - I ended up doing this step a good number of times before I got the rear pedal operating in a way I liked.
