No it's not.

Even if you ended up in this situation, you could still throw a number small enough to move a piece onto one of your own occupied positions:

A stalemate position would be one in which neither player could make any future play. You can imagine such a position if both players had checkers on the bar and closed home boards. Neither player would be able to enter his checker or make any other move, and the game would be stuck.

But such a position cannot be reached through legal play. Here's why. Suppose a double closeout position were somehow possible. Either you or your opponent would have to close your home board first. Let's say it's you.

- You can't close your board if you have a checker on the bar. So your opponent must hit you sometime after you close your board.

- Your opponent can't hit you while your board is closed if he has a checker on the bar. So sometime after he hits you, you must hit him.

- You can't hit your opponent while you have a checker on the bar if his home board is closed. So he presumably closes his board sometime after you hit him.

- But if you hit him, he will be on the bar against your closed board and he won't be able to close his own board. So a double closeout position is impossible.

Very expensive, but I'd love to own one........ especially the non-folding "Olympic".

Anybody play online? I play the Windows Internet Backgammon sometimes but it's shit as you can't select your opponent manually

Ahah !!!! Thought I just had it...

Sooooo The game standa at all the blacks in the home block apart from three which have been hit and are on the bar
The whites have two on numbers 2 to 7 a further two anywhere on the outer play area.

The white also has ONE marker on point one.

Black throws a double 1

That knocks off the white and puts all three blacks on the number 1 point of the white home.

Now with the blacks unable to leave the white home and the white unable to get back on..

Except of course that once the 3 blacks are on black would then have to start moving his counters down in his home area leaving space for the white to come on .. damn !!!!!!!!!!

John - give up on it, a stalemate can't happen - unless you lose all four dice!
