Bird not healthy

Hi All,
I'm calling out for help in identifying the problem with my 98 carburetted Blackbird.I ride for the best part all year round, however after having to recuperate from a replacement joint in my throttle hand, she has been laid up for 4 months.Prior to this she ran like a dream.Within that 4 months I would fire her up occasionally, however leaving it too long between the battery died and could not be revived.I bought a new battery and she started first time and ran up to temperature fine.

However taking her out for the first time earlier this week this has been the sequence of events.
Starting on choke taking about 3 attempts at starting.Once warmed up she kept cutting out unless revs kept up and cutting out at junctions. When at speed running absolutely as normal but when decelerating on approach to roundabouts etc she backfires and cuts out.
A friend suggested that the idle jets were gummed up or the float(s) sticking.I put fresh fuel and a bottle of redex through but no difference.
Today she will not start at all and backfires when trying to start.
I hope some expertise on here can help me.

I would agree with your Friend - sounds like the idle jets could be gummed up.

Once you do get her running - do a full check that the battery is charging - it is common for a failed battery to overload the r/r and take it out too.

Is there fresh fuel in the bike? May be as simple as that?

carbs

Idle jets require removal to clear obstructions usually with a high pressure air line

I had a similar problem when I bought my wifes bike. Very low mileage - hardly used for several years. It would start and run on choke but cut out with choke off. Ran on open throttle OK. I ran every sort of cleaner through it before I took the carbs off. Two idle jets were completely blocked so not even the cleaner would get through and the other two were partially blocked. Carb cleaner in an ultrasound bath and all is sweet now.
